Orienteering race (BOK Galoppen) 1:05:01 [3] 7.53 km (8:38 / km) +180m 7:43 / km
slept:6.0 weight:72.8kg shoes: inov8 Mudclaw300 Yellow1

BOK Galoppen at Cannop Ponds. 6.2km blue course.

Bit of a frustrating run. Should have done well given my knowledge of the area but really struggled with running through/on the fallen branches and all sorts encountered around the start/finish and on legs 6-7/10-11. New shoes had no grip at all on branches although very good on mud.

Tried going straight where possible. Big mess at 6 (where didn't go straight) - was a triangle of three depressions and I was remembering a similar trio further up and so went beyond the wrong veg boundary. After a couple of minutes realised that I had indeed passed 2 veg boundaries and not one and found control easily after that...

Went a bit off course to 8 but was an easy platform to find (easier now the path next to it is mapped...) and doubt I lost time. Did, however, lose over a minute on 9 as either the map was wrong or the control was on the wrong ditch - worked off the fence to the north and it was a long way off. Diverted into wrong ditch at 10. Recovered with next to no time loss.

Went the interesting straight route to 12 between the dark green bits. Going up to the path and around would have been at least 1 min quicker as the brashings were very tough. Rest of the course trivial. Including 133 at the end - went on a rough bearing, had nothing to work with so didn't try using the map. Unsure if it was above or below the ridge so went high with expectation of seeing it below and found it straight away. No elephant tracks when I started either but later runners all seemed to be complaining about it...

Bit of a rubbish result. Probably lost 4-5 mins due to mistakes/poor route choices, maybe another minute as first starter and having to wake up most of the controls.

Running race (Ashton Court Parkrun) 23:08 [4] 5.0 km (4:38 / km) +100m 4:12 / km
slept:6.0 weight:72.4kg shoes: Saucony Powergrid Triumph 9

Ashton Court Parkrun. They said at the start about it being a run not a race so treated it as a run and not a race...

Aiming to put in about 75% effort as Worcester Beacon tonight and Cannop tomorrow and don't want to be too tired to be at the better end of the results. Ended up slowing myself down on the way up and on the way down.

Finished about a minute slower than Little Stoke took me at 90% effort. This was much more interesting though.

Orienteering - Night race (Western Night League) 55:51 [3] 5.14 km (10:52 / km) +215m 8:59 / km
shoes: inov8 Roclite295 (2)

WNL on Worcester Beacon. In the rain and thick fog.

S-41-42-63-60-45-46-47-58-54-70-56-48-52-49-55-50-F - 250 points.

Fog quite thick and quickly gave up on using the big torch. The new little headtorch was much better, although had to be removed from my head after the first control to improve visibility - still was lucky to be able to see even 5 yards at a time and at many control sites was within feet of the flag but couldn't see it!

Overshot 63 and ended up too high up the hill - was looking out for a path to the left and gully to the right. Saw neither. After leaving was on a perfect line to 60 but just didn't see it - lost a couple of minutes heading down the hill until I happened to just about make out a big crag to my left that I hoped was the start of the big crags on the map.

Got confused leaving 60 for 45 as mixed up with paths. By the time I'd realised I was wrong I was pretty much next to 53 and 44 (combined worth 25 points). Didn't realise I was so close until after I'd finished and lost a lot of time faffing around trying to go straight when around the paths would have been much quicker.

Found the other 10 pointer path junction controls - 46/47 with some difficulty but guessing where the indistinct path was and then turning off it randomly hit 30 pointer 58 bang on! Had 25 mins left so enough to go to the top of the map and back. Wasn't sure if I was on the path to 70 and certainly couldn't make out the path junction but turned off anyway and hit it perfectly.

Got to the finish probably just a bit too short to be able to head over to 59.

Little bit annoyed about not realising my proximity to 53 and 44 when I was semi-lost as should have changed plan to get them. Had I have got these then I would have won... Can't be too downhearted as beating Ifor at night-o isn't something that I've experienced often/ever.

Running (Westbury Harriers) 43:12 [3] 8.37 km (5:10 / km) +105m 4:51 / km
slept:7.0 weight:71.8kg shoes: Saucony Powergrid Triumph 9

For some reason most of Westbury wimped out tonight so they only had the top group doing intervals (16x 300 on the roads somewhere...). Went for my own run instead, doing a tour of some of the roads Bristol Water have dug up at the moment.

Bristol Water have shut off one of the pavements on Alma Road for no reason (they've only dug up the road...) and forced everyone onto the side that was under water to above ankle deep... Didn't appreciate pretty much all of the car park at Coombe Dingle being under 2 in+ of water when I returned.

Surprisingly warm out. Quickly regretted wearing the base layer and waterproof once I'd started.

Running (BOK training run) 1:06:16 [3] 11.22 km (5:54 / km) +100m 5:39 / km
slept:8.0 weight:72.5kg shoes: Saucony Powergrid Triumph 9

BOK training run from Horfield. Around the Filton golf course.

Very wet underfoot in places. Struggling with the hills a bit but made up for it by running fast across the grass by the BAWA centre.

Ankle much better for being taped.

Seem to have now exceeded my running distance target for the year. May need to be optimistic and aim for 1500km or so for next year...
