Cross country skiing 1:00:00 [3] 8.0 km (7:30 / km)

Woke.....to the sound of rain, wind, fog and wet snow. It was my last day and l just went out for a little skate. A number of route options were closed due the Australian junior races and, due to the fog and wind, l stayed around the McKay Rd area. I couldn't see a thing with wet glasses, so skied uphill without them (ie blind), but thought l should see on the downhills (particularly Aitken's, with its tight corners) to avoid disaster. Saw a few more friends and then called it a week!

Cross country skiing 1:30:00 [3] 13.0 km (6:55 / km)

Woke to.......a forecast hurricane, but it looked just like any other bluebird day. I was feeling a bit worn from the week's activities and so opted for another skate. I went out to Watchbed Creek and surrounds again. There were heaps of people from my skiing generation and so it was very social. After being out for a couple of hours, with no hurricane in sight, l gave up and opted for apres ski at activities at Windy Corner instead. Today was the Australian junior classic sprint championships and there was plenty of evidence of the benefits of good glide wax (most didn't have any grip wax and just double poled up the hills).

Downhill skiing 4:00:00 [3]

Woke to a... 'nother blue sky day and decided to go downhill skiing for the first time in about 15 years (since my original knee accident). The biggest challenge was putting my old boots on, and once they were on, they were not coming off. I was pretty tentative so booked a lesson. All was good and it all came back. However everyone commented on my old skis and l felt like a museum piece, even though my antique ski suit and skis were completely matching.

Cross country skiing 4:30:00 [3] 26.0 km (10:23 / km)

Woke to a... bluebird morning and decided to do the Grand Tour. So we skied up the McKay Rd, across to Ruined Castle, down to Pretty Valley and cross country to Cope Hut. The snow was like icing and sparkled. During lunch at Cope Hut, the weather turned (there were feathery clouds before this) and turned into a howling gale with lots of windswept spindrift. We battled home into the headwind. Great day out but l was glad to get home.

Cross country skiing 1:30:00 [3] 13.0 km (6:55 / km)

Woke to a........nother gloomy morning and so was not able to do a long tour. Skated out to Watchbed Creek again and then up McKay Rd and down Aitken's. My face got a good ice blast (exfoliation) when skiing into the wind. I'm feeling a liot more confident - my new boots are good and knee is holding out. There's not many people here but l still managed to find a few to talk to during the obligatory breaks.

Woke to a

Cross country skiing 1:30:00 [3] 11.0 km (8:11 / km)

Woke to a pretty gloomy morning (a bit damp) at Falls Creek before heading out skating. Although the tracks were good, visibility was limited to a few feet and there was a strong wind. I went across the dam wall but returned pretty quickly. My skiing technique and confidence was a lot better than yesterday.

Cross country skiing 2:15:00 [3] 20.0 km (6:45 / km)

Falls Creek. An hour of classical skiing in the morning followed by about an hour and a half skating in the afternoon. Fabulous groomed snow and the scenery was fantastic, but my body (knee and upper body) were not as good as they should be. Raced out to Watchbed Creek, only to find a big headwind on the way back.

Run 43:00 [3] 5.9 km (7:17 / km)

Run around Reef Hills with Peter. Felt sluggish from not doing enough exercise this week. On out return we saw a kitten climbing up into underneath the car. We looked under and prodded with a stuck, started the engine (after checking) and tooted the horn, then figured it must have escaped without us seeing. About a km down the road and driving at about 80km/hr, l looked out the back window and saw it jump/fall out of the car, land on its feet and run into the bush. Poor little thing!

Run 42:26 [3] 6.0 km (7:04 / km)

Blackburn lake and creeklands. I felt surprisingly good, despite having a cold over the weekend. If l take the saying 'feed a cold and starve a fever' as sound medical advice, l knew it was a cold as l was really hungry, unlike when l caught the lurgy in NZ and couldn't eat for weeks.
I don't want to get sick as l have a week of cross country skiing coming up.

Run 50:10 [3] 6.2 km (8:05 / km)

Orienteering training run at Abbey Walk, aptly named because of the very steep hills. Some gorgeous new houses in the area and some very interesting bush areas.
One odd thing was that l discovered there are two Winton Wetlands in Victoria - one at Benalla (at Winton, with a discovery centre etc) and one alongside Dandenong Creek - both run by water authorities!

Run 43:34 [3] 6.1 km (7:09 / km)

Run around Blackburn lake and creek lands. Didn't feel too bad today.

Orienteering 1:06:00 [3] 4.53 km (14:34 / km)

State Series at Chewton Diggings course 4. I came cross country from Benalla and made some navigational errors on the way. Started running close to Ron and saw him a bit out there. I made 2 errors - one involved running after Ron up a road in the wrong direction - big mistake (l was trying to catch up to him and didn't do enough checks). The other was floundering around in the green at 119. Other than that it was a good run in a nice area. Went out for lunch with Ross afterwards. He is starting to make an impact on course 3 - the result of my coaching of course!

Labouring 30:00 [3]

Another 5 hours at the steel factory, but not quite so many squats today, so only 30 mins claimed.

Run 41:17 [3] 5.9 km (7:00 / km)

Run around Blackburn lake and creeklands. Despite being a gloomy morning the birds were out in force. I followed the run with a good back stretch by hanging from the swings.

Labouring 1:00:00 [3]

I've been working in Ian's steel factory for a couple of days to help with stock. This involves picking up and carrying boxes of steel roof fittings all day. I am enjoying the physical work in comparison to thinking and writing all day. I am claiming 1 hour's training for 5 hours work, as l am going home quite exhausted - it feels the equivalent of going to the gym.

Labouring 1:00:00 [3]

Work in the steel factory. Lots of squats carrying boxes of steel.

Run 51:00 [3] 6.4 km (7:58 / km)

Street O at Ferntree Gully. I went the hilly way and had to walk a bit. Bitterly cold day but it wasn't too bad when you got going.
