Note
(rest day)

Back in Canada as of this afternoon. Thailand and Laos were amazing - incredibly beautiful landscape. We went Bangkok > Kanchanaburi > Bangkok > Chiang Mai > Pai > Chiang Khong > Huang Xia > Luang Prabang > Bangkok > home. We took planes, public buses (comfortable and cheap), minibuses (death traps), overnight train, slow boat for 2 days, lots of tuk tuks, and taxis. It was also hot - very hot, as in 27' in the evening felt pleasant and cool!

In terms of activities, we rented scooters, took a cooking class, swan in many waterfalls, saw the Bridge over the River Kwai (and now need to watch the movie...), played with elephants, watched the sunset in a canyon, took an awesome slow boat, saw a LOT of temples, stayed in a variety of interesting hotels (the low was a small jungle town that didn't have glass nor a bug screen in the window). The highlight for me was when we rented scooters and just cruised between small villages on back roads... wonderful!

The end of our holiday was somewhat distracted by our friend Geraldo starting to exhibit signs of severe dengue fever. Initially in a "hospital" in Laos, he's now laid up in Bangkok Hospital for at least a week with a low, but stable, platelet count. It was a scary couple of days until he got there. Moral of the story - always buy travel insurance, and don't get dengue in Laos (none of the hospitals are able to deal with severe dengue disease progression).

Happy to be back in cold, sunny Canada! I'll maybe consider training this week, once the jet lag and dengue tests are dealt with!
