Dunalistair

Ran well in this race so recent long cycles surely must have helped. Also minimised my mistakes which can only be good news.

Got 1 nicely, forest was very runnable too. Didn't cross the stream where I wanted to 2. Ended up slightly left for 3 but got very lucky here. Saw Hugh cross in front of me on my way to 5.

9 was definitely a mistake. Hit the fence and spotted a stile over it to my right so went for it. Crossed and took a bearing to the control. Followed it through the green but no control. Ran around for a bit before heading back. Met Colm coming against me, had caught him on my way to 8. So at least a couple of minutes lost here, if not more.

Went right to 10 and then left to 11, not much lost. Definitely lost time on 12 but was careful in the circle, slightly left of the control, but was happy to lose a few seconds here as opposed to a few minutes. Had Hugh caught by now. Ran in front of him to 14 and then on the track uphill from 14 I put a bit of effort in. Hugh didn't like that :-) But didn't lose him completely. Saw him at 15 and 16, but not again until I was on my way to 19 from 18 and he was going to 17.

Took a bearing to 17 and was wondering what AP there would be but then I saw the wall. It took forever to arrive. Cross the wall just below the control. Then uphill to 18. Lost some time on 19, tried to stay high and then drop down, Dropped just beyond it, and then came back at the right height, by luck than anything else. Another long tough leg to 20, going was rough.

Stopped for water, had a couple of cups. Didn't get 20 right though, sloppy. Last loop then through the forest. More climb to deal with. Legs really hurting now and extremely close to cramping on more than one occasion, particularly at 22 after the climb up to it. Climb didn't end there, more for the last couple of controls before the downhill run in.

Ankle behaved itself today. Was trying to think where the problem started and think I can trace it back to Day 1 at POM, but it hasn't affected me all the time.

Downloaded and saw that I had beaten Nick, WTF???
Just had to wait for the remaining Irish starters to finish then, thankfully (I think) Magic had a faster time than me. Much as I would have liked to have ran a WOC long distance final, looking at the bigger picture Magic would be much more capable of getting a better result than me. Even thinking about this in bed last night I reckoned just focusing on Sprint was the more sensible option, too many races in the 1 week is probably too much for me. But even though I was very close to getting the spot for WOC, I amn't disappointed, pleased to have ended the selection race weekend on a positive note.

WOC Selection Race for Middle Distance

Was positive for this race and doing well, needed to too since my orienteering has been a bit off so far this year, too many mistakes. And guess what, another shite run, lots of reasons.

Rubbish start, ran hard but then lost the plot, didn't help that I ran in the wrong direction, a common mistake that i've being making. Should have relocated faster, really obvious where I was too.

For the next few controls I ran to make up time, losing a few seconds getting in to 6, but getting the controls alright.

Leaving the forest to 7 I went over on my dodgy ankle, the one i'd being trying to protect, and then messed up 7 too. Didn't concentrate enough and ended up too high. Race in big trouble now and as a result mentally my head went.

Downhills were now difficult with the ankle. Went too far left on the way to 9. 10 was alright but physically the run to 11 was difficult. Physically tired at this stage too, but maybe this wouldn't have been an issue if I had been running better up to now. Could see Roar up the hill in front of me and then Neil behind me.

12 and 13 were straightforward enough but wasn't liking the downhill with the ankle. Went through the open to 14, started to worry i'd gone too far, so cut over and was on track. Hit 15 ok but a bit surprised by it.

Downhill to 16 with a couple of the womens elite. But missed 16, didn't go far enough I think, and then stumbled across it. More climb to 17 and then was a bit short on 18.

Last 3 controls were alright.

Overall disappointed with my race as to me it means i'll be lucky to see the forest at WOC, something that was a definite aim of mine. As is the case with the orienteering there is only 1 thing to blame, me.

Map of Hungarian Test Race.

Ran at an easy pace, not wanting to use any excess energy ahead of the race later.

Map at 11 was missing a bush so hesitated to check I was in the right location. Not sure I got all the best routes but happy enough with how I executed the ones I did take.

Not sure how any of the locals find there way around these estates.

On the warm up map which was on the way to the start. Nice distance to get there meant a warm up was consequential.

Did some strides then on the grass before starting. Body not feeling too energetic for some reason, not a positive feeling!

Sprint Selection Race for WOC 2015

Plan = kill it

Was happy enough with how I started, took a nice line on the path to get to 1. Maybe a hesitation or 2 for the first 8 but running going well and getting the route choices I chose right.

Did some thinking about 9, long leg. Went left but didn't execute 100%. The school fence which I hit surprised me, turned left and then when the road turned right I had to stop and check again, needed to go left here. From there I ran the rest of the leg alright but was hard going uphill.

Went right around the building to 11 but maybe left along the path might have been faster running.

Then into a small cluster of controls. Some climb here, up and down loegs. Weren't too difficult so got them all ok I think. Might have been a faster route to 15 on the path through the green but kept on the road to the left. Also went right to 16.

To 19 I went left and also left to 20. From here to the end it was a matter of trying to push push push. My direction to 22 wasn't great but not too bad. Then from there it was give it all to the line.

Overall joint 2nd Irish with c.hill on the same time as me. Because Burke is before Hill I was ahead in the results list, proper order ;-)

Did my best in the race, some things to improve on, but definitely happy with the race.

Could get used to this resting lark, very easy on the body.

But back to reality tomorrow with sprint selection race in the evening. Going to be fun. And so will the rest of the weekend as areas are nice.

Body is ready for this.

slept:6.5 (rest day)

Was a very busy evening of packing. And since the weather was damp I didn't consider venturing out, keeping with the theme of resting.

Because Mike is short of Irish gear for EYOC/JWOC as a result of a very smart company who shipped a box of gear to him simply addressed, "#### ####, Ireland" (# is the person's name, they did have that right). So ended up doing a stock take of what actual gear I do have.

I need a few more XLs on the team!

Exceptionally bad start to my early to bed plan but had an excuse I suppose as I was doing aptitude tests online.

As expected I didn't get out to do some training this evening so maybe i'll go for a short spin on the bike tomorrow evening instead. Not too worried about missing training this week since important races this weekend, probably would have made more of an effort if it was a normal week.

I said last week that sleep was something I wanted to get, well don't think I fullly achieved that goal, was happy enough with how it went for the week but wasn't smart last night. So need to try again going to bed early this week.

Definitely an easy week until Friday. Might try for 30 minutes running this evening. Soreness behind my right knee is feeling better today so a short run later should be ok. Plan is to cycle tomorrow but might have to end up doing a turbo session as something to do after work.

Body tired this morning climbing the stairs but to be expected.

Muckross

Bit of a different evening, decided a couple of weeks ago I needed to get my eyes tested, had been putting it off for a couple of years. Optometrist recommended that I wear glasses for driving as i'm long/short sighted, which ever one means i've trouble seeing things far away. Wonder if I can blame that for any of my orienteering debacles recently, unlikely i'd imagine.

Leg better so out to stretch the legs on a lovely evening at the start of my pre selection race taper. Just went on a randomish loop around Muckross House taking in a few places. Mainly on trails or some grass this evening which was nice.

There didn't seem to be a massive amount of tiredness either in the legs this evening which must be a positive.

Ankle didn't really like the path out near the start of the road to Dinis, too many roots to get over. Felt a bit weak but not too bad, survived that section.

Looking like tomorrow might prove difficult to fit in the planned cycle with a ham & cabbage dinner and house to view after work.
