Orienteering warm up/down 14:15 [1] 1.0 km (14:15 / km)
shoes: VJ Falcons 10

Jogged over to the start of the SHI Classic. Hands turned out to be colder than I thought they were back in the car so was thinking gloves might have been an option. Didn't have too much time to kill so a small bit of jogging and some calf stretches, did quads at the car.

SHI Classic
Ocknell & Slufters

Plan was to survive, mission accomplished.

Went out steady and first 3 controls were easy. Then made a right balls of 4, chose my route, but somehow managed to do a 180!!! Then messed up in the circle to compound matters, so I imagine 4/5mins may have been lost. Then probably lost a couple of more minutes at 5, so not a good start.

Got things together after that and only lost a small bit of time at 11, landed in the depression but no sign of the control, checked my description and it read inside north side, so back I went and there was the contol hidden under a bush, but not the only control that was buried/hidden today.

Lost time at 18, direction went wrong after crossing the fence and then the marsh was quite wet, might have been better to go right to the road. Then 19 I was also slightly off. Then downhill to 20 and the second map.

Long and a bit uphill to 21, was feeling tired and then to the water control at 22 where I was caught by a Welshman who'd been trailing me since 14. On the way to 23 Seamus cruised past which surprised me at the time. Slightly off at 23 but next few controls I spiked, 25 and 27 were bogey controls, but again not the only controls of this type on the course.

The next few short legs were fine and Seamus after getting away lost time at 28, pulled away again but he lost time on 33 too. 33-36 were pure cross country running, no orienteering to be done. Long leg to 38 which I went straight on and did better than the Welshman who'd gotten ahead of me. Then uphill to the last control and the finish.

Glad that I ran ok, but could have done without those minutes I lost at the start. Would I have broken 100 if I hadn't messed up, probably so that's a bit disappointing. Thought 2 hours would have been alright for me before the race so to do under 110 beats my target which may have been high considering the terrain, but 17km is a long distance, especially for me, and after dieing horribly in France. Controlled things better today, chocolate before I started plus 1 energy gel equalled a perfect sugar level at the end. Felt a bit high when it came to planned time for a second gel, but I was getting close to the end so wasn't going to take one.

Garmin distance was 19.37km.

SHI Relays
Pamber & Silchester

Ran 1st leg on the 2nd Irish Team, so obvious goal was to beat the first team, mission accomplished, thanks to my run along with my team mates, Conor and Ruairi.

It seems there were 3 courses and were different, only really saw the lads on my course which I stuck with for as long as I could but finally got dropped between 10-11, got a bit stuck so fell behind and lost sight. I also made a small mistake at this control, no real clue where I was when I crossed the stream. Then took a path option to 12 and 13. Overshot 14 but last few controls were fine.

Overall pleased with my run since I finished ahead of the other 2 Irish teams, just. Could have run a bit better if I had hung on better.

3 relays this year, 3 first legs, and 3 relay runs i'm happy with.

Travelling to England for SHI so no training today.

Note

I have to try running this evening, even 20mins will satisfy me. I've done nothing in the last week!!! So maybe if I rest next week after the SHIs and get back training the week after, that'll do as my end of season break.

5 PM

Trails 33:42 [2] 5.91 km (5:42 / km)
ahr:147 max:156 shoes: Mizuno Waverider 12

Blennerville, out along the canal to the fields, turned back at the section where there is a field to the left.

An easy run to get the legs used to running again, and I was also sick of not running. Didn't feel too comfortable running but not in any real pain, trying to mind the knee. Should be ok for racing though, well the relays on Saturday, Sunday is a different story, but some pain killers before I run might help.

Windy this evening, which i'm getting sick of, too much of it in last couple of weeks, Although with my knee I was concentrating on my running rather than the horrible wind I was running into.

Felt HR was a bit on the high side for the effort I was putting in, maybe wind was causing me to increase effort.

(rest day)

Had physio last night which went alright. It appears that my quad was too tight, so the muscle that connects to the top of the calf from the calf was under a bit of pressure, hence the pain. So physio did a lot of work on my calf today. Still a bit sore so will give running a miss this evening and do 30/40mins tomorrow evening to get the legs moving again, my worry is that it'll hurt!
