Orienteering warm up/down 14:15 [1] 1.0 km (14:15 / km)

Jogged over to the start of the SHI Classic. Hands turned out to be colder than I thought they were back in the car so was thinking gloves might have been an option. Didn't have too much time to kill so a small bit of jogging and some calf stretches, did quads at the car.

Plan was to survive, mission accomplished.
Went out steady and first 3 controls were easy. Then made a right balls of 4, chose my route, but somehow managed to do a 180!!! Then messed up in the circle to compound matters, so I imagine 4/5mins may have been lost. Then probably lost a couple of more minutes at 5, so not a good start.
Got things together after that and only lost a small bit of time at 11, landed in the depression but no sign of the control, checked my description and it read inside north side, so back I went and there was the contol hidden under a bush, but not the only control that was buried/hidden today.
Lost time at 18, direction went wrong after crossing the fence and then the marsh was quite wet, might have been better to go right to the road. Then 19 I was also slightly off. Then downhill to 20 and the second map.
Long and a bit uphill to 21, was feeling tired and then to the water control at 22 where I was caught by a Welshman who'd been trailing me since 14. On the way to 23 Seamus cruised past which surprised me at the time. Slightly off at 23 but next few controls I spiked, 25 and 27 were bogey controls, but again not the only controls of this type on the course.
The next few short legs were fine and Seamus after getting away lost time at 28, pulled away again but he lost time on 33 too. 33-36 were pure cross country running, no orienteering to be done. Long leg to 38 which I went straight on and did better than the Welshman who'd gotten ahead of me. Then uphill to the last control and the finish.
Glad that I ran ok, but could have done without those minutes I lost at the start. Would I have broken 100 if I hadn't messed up, probably so that's a bit disappointing. Thought 2 hours would have been alright for me before the race so to do under 110 beats my target which may have been high considering the terrain, but 17km is a long distance, especially for me, and after dieing horribly in France. Controlled things better today, chocolate before I started plus 1 energy gel equalled a perfect sugar level at the end. Felt a bit high when it came to planned time for a second gel, but I was getting close to the end so wasn't going to take one.
Garmin distance was 19.37km.
