SWSW Day 8 - Bomboy Mine, east of Phoenix (hosted by GPHXO). Short Advanced course, 4.3k, 184m. More desert, so lots of scratchy plants but mostly avoidable. Enough taller vegetation that visibility is reduced in places. The map was primarily computer generated, showing contours, vegetation, "streams" and trails. Minimal field checking so there are unmapped features (mostly rock, contours are good). Upper 50s, mostly sunny. Pin punching! Bags were generally hung high on obvious features

Not my best day navigationally. Biggest error was 10-12 minutes on control 5 when I headed down the wrong big spur. Small errors on 3 and 10, mostly because it was difficult to tell the exact placement of the control from the map.

SWSW Day 6 - Chimney Rock. Short advanced course, 5.3k, 200m. Spectacular area of granite terrain in Redington Pass to the East of Tucson. Complex contour detail with very good visibility. Elevation is over 4000 ft so not much cactus but some areas with catclaw. Cooler today with temperatures in the 50s and a stiff breeze. Rain came in after we were done and were driving back. Only downside of the area is that the access road is pretty rough, taking about 40min to drive 8 miles.

An OK run. Lost about 3 minutes on control 4 - off to the left a bit and misread the contour detail. 2 minutes lost on 9 due to sloppy compass work. Climbed a few extra contours than I needed to on my route choice to 8 but hit the control fine (except for having to search a bit for the bag obscured by a fallen tree). Fastest time on the Short course.

SWSW Day 5 - Sprints on U of Arizona campus. Sprint 1, 3.4k (minimum runnable distance). I wasn't sure how my legs would respond after yesterday's outing, but they seemed to be OK. Ran hard but kept out of the pain cave. Lost some time on control 4 since it wasn't clear what level it was on and I guessed wrong. AP also shows some time loss on 9 which I think was some hesitation after a momentary loss of map contact. Temps were about 60F with overcast skies.

Sprint 2, 3.2k (shortest runnable distance). Ran this one at a less intense pace. Huge error (2:48 per AP) on control 4 when I missed a passageway and then took a while to figure things out. I probably passed within about 20m of the control as I overshot it.

SWSW Day 4 - Mini-Rogaine at Oak Tree Canyon. Grassland terrain at ~5000 ft elevation with spurs and reentrants of various steepness. Very open and "runnable" with minimal cactus or other scratchy stuff. A spectacular area scenerywise with views in every direction (when you were up on the ridges). A bit cooler today with temperatures in the low-mid 60s. Still sunny. The map is a work in progress, so vegetation isn't mapped in the part to the east of Route 83, but that didn't have much impact since it's so open.

Today's event was a 3-hour score-O/rogaine with 31 controls having a value of 10 to 60 points. Maximum score was 1110 points. I started in the northern part of the west side, which has the steepest and most detailed terrain, then worked my way back in the southern part to the road crossing (via culvert underneath), and finished up with a loop in the eastern part. I got to 24 of the controls, including all of the 50 and 60 pointers for a total of 920. Only had navigational errors on three of them (51, 61 and 36) which totaled maybe 10 minutes. 19 people were able to get to all the controls.

Control order: 22-42-31-51-61-37-56-45-53-43-54-36-52-20-62-35-21-34-44-50-60-55-23-10-Fin Livelox

SWSW Day 3 - Cholla Chaser on Ironwood map. The race started with a box with 12 controls, with age and gender determining how many controls you needed to visit in the box. After the box there was a 2.7k point-to-point course which everyone did. Winner is the first to punch the finish box. Ironwood is fairly flat, gently sloping terrain with many similar-looking washes (mapped mostly with the linear marsh symbol, although they were all quite dry). Challenging terrain, especially if you lose contact. Upper 60s, sunny.

I needed to do three controls in the box, so did the three control closest to the start (F-D-T) finishing with the one closest to the first control of the point-to-point course. I was probably third out of the box, just behind another guy who I assumed also had only 3 box controls to do. I was behind him through control 5, then he veered off too far left going to 6 and I noticed that I had to wake up 6, so was in the lead. Proceeded to overshoot both 7 and 8 and got caught by a crowd of several people. Then at 9, we all mislead ourselves into the wrong wash system, even though there was a very strong attack point off a trail bend. So from 9 to 10 to the finish was a footrace. Ended up 7th overall. Reasonably happy with that but probably lost about 4 minutes on 7, 8 and 9, which is how far I was behind 1st.

Keeping with the spirit of the event, bumped into a cholla on the 7-8 leg and had to use my map case to flick the cholla ball off. Ouch.

SWSW Day 2 - Javelina Hustle at Catalina SP. Short version, 5.3k, 95m. Mass start race with some twists. First three controls were in a box and could be taken in any order, then a point-to-point course. We could skip one control, including any in the box. Another fine day with temps in the upper 60s and sunny.

Was with other people for most of the race which means running harder than usual and relying (too much) on others for navigation. Was going to skip number 3 but ended up following a crowd and ended up there, so switched to skipping number 4, which was probably better anyway. Flip-flopped with Soupbone from 4 to about 10. We both bobbled 10 but I recovered faster. Also missed a bit on 6 and 7 by following others. Finished 23 out of about 100 starters.
