Rogaining race (Oh-So-Late USD Rogaine) 11:52:10 [5] 72.84 km (9:47 / km) +1603m 8:48 / km
shoes: Inov8 Trailroc 255 black

First word, ouch. I tried running without my superfeet insoles and this made my feet longer in the shoes, add to that loose laces and softball sized rocks to kick in the fields, and my big toenails are now ouch. Luckily I had my superfeet in the bag and at about 530am I had the bright idea of asking Wil for a 2min break so I could put them in, and what a difference yay. But by then I was already fairly well beat up.

Second, our prep time was a bit stressful, but made for a more interesting event. We got the maps close to 5, and even joked about having so much time to plan given we got 2hrs for the last world's. But this course had a number of combinations all of which seemed to have bad endings in that we would have been really far away and couldn't cut or add much. I reworked things a few too many times, with us trying to remember what the routes were and wrote down how much we dropped overall for each distance, with non stop chatter from Todd and Robbie in the background. Finally got a route of about 70k straightline that I was quite happy about b/c we didn't drop any big points until the end and got all the 90's and 100's. I'm interested in seeing Ricky and Mark's route to compare.

We started out and lo and behold Mark and Ricky were the only other team going to the same control, and the 2 thereafter. They kept going a bit right and we couldn't figure out why as there were no good controls to that side. Later found out Mark's compass still had an declanation set in it from the XPD which he corrected after our last control together.

The first 7 hours went by very nice and comfortably. Thereafter my toenails were hurting and I dropped off the pace and had to push harder to keep up with Wil. We hit most things ok, made a few errors - will detail more when I have the map. Probably only a couple of big, 1-5min errors.

The last 3 hours were pretty miserable as our course had no good shorting options except for dropping a 50 and 80 which we did, but it still meant we had to keep over 6kph ave up. We came in just after Mark and Ricky and I was thinking that won't be good if we had the same score (like NZ '10), but this time we were ok.

Sorry to hear that Ricky wasn't well, it would have been interesting to see how it would have turned out if they had a normal run.

Thanks to all again for putting up an excellent event. Thanks also to KG for driving us down and back and going with Wil to collect controls on my behalf, what more can a man ask for.

Looks like the gps started about 9 mins late, so added 1k to the 71.9 total.
