Note
(rest day)

I might get out later for a stroll but think a rest day is in order. Mostly not too sore (tight back and left calf as usual) from yesterday's abuse. May have twisted my right knee a bit catching myself from falling, or from one of my two falls yesterday, but it's not too bothersome.

Orienteering race (3BC (3rd Annual)) 5:55:58 intensity: (18 @0) + (11:54 @1) + (2:59:49 @2) + (1:48:30 @3) + (48:29 @4) + (6:58 @5) *** 19.91 km (17:53 / km) +235m 16:53 / km

Third Annual Babcock Bog and Boulder Challenge in Gallitzen State Forest near Windmer, PA (1/2 hour NW of Bedford, where we stayed last night). This is also our third outing. Weather was the worst so far, though the cooler temp was great for the runners. 48-50F and rain showers most of the morning including a short stint of heavier rain before we got out maps. It mostly tapered off by the 11:00 start and I just noticed a few light showers while on the course. Dressed as I did last year but kept the light raincoat on.

I should retire now because I won Veteran Women 6Hr again, against a different opponent. The past two years it was a WPOC member, Naomi Jarvis; this year my opponent was Average Jo from NEOOC (maybe Kathy Jo Rufener?). My score was 1164 our of 2260, one point more than last year, but with 22 controls (vs last year's 20; out of a total of 40).

Since I'd mostly stayed on the southern half the past two times, I decided to do a loop to the north, across Rt 56 from the start. Finished with a few controls south of the road.

Control order 34-54-61-43-82-74-38-42-55-75-63-41-62-36-37-83-53-86-46-35-31-33 Score for each point was equal to the control number

Official time was 5:56:02. I accidentally stopped my watch for a few seconds.

The ones I had trouble with (non-spikes) were the three 80+ pointers. The good thing, though, was that if I hadn't bailed to the road before finding 83 I wouldn't have seen the red trilliums that were located between the two boulder clusters from which I re-attacked. At least a dozen blooms if not more.

To 82, I hit a stream before the actual one and searched there a bit before continuing, then heading north until I realized it must be south. For 86 I should have headed in after 83 because there were trails most of the way. Instead I had a not great route in and a worse route out of it after getting 53.

Loretta Opila (check-in, awards, and food) and Jim Wolfe of WPOC outdid themselves again. Thanks!
