Running 39:00 [3] 8.5 km (4:35 / km) +180m 4:09 / km

Lunch run with Sam around my Monday loop. Good to catch up with him again and here about how he would have smashed my Hannels segment except for going the wrong way.

Running 39:00 [3] 7.8 km (5:00 / km) +120m 4:39 / km

Had to make time to run today, which meant getting up early which is never really my preference. It was quite nice once I got out though to be fair.

Note
(rest day)

Lots of driving today - from Balranald to Canberra, with a decent stop at Narrandera, which was lovely and had a very large guitar.

Orienteering (NOL long mass start) 2:04:00 [3] 17.8 km (6:58 / km) +500m 6:07 / km

At Crooked Straight, came 11th, +26mins or so. Oh dear, pretty disastrous run for me. Not sure why, I was kind of keen - but probably not in any real mindset to race with all the hecticness. Set off with no urgency and let Aston and Pat get out of sight for no real reason, so took my own route to #4 dropping to the control thinking "haha I've managed to get ahead of everyone" only to find myself in completely the wrong place. So ensued about 2hrs of quality time to myself running through the desert enabling me to analyse a lot about the world and my place in it while steadily running out of steam to the point where I could hardly move because of all the sand. Which was nice. At least Grace won so the journey was worth it :)

Orienteering race (NOL Middle) 36:30 [5] 7.2 km (5:04 / km) +140m 4:37 / km

At Wiela/Bunyip Reach, came 5th, +2:33mins to Aston. Got to SA a bit early forgetting the 30min time zone change (fruit reminders rightly more important than time reminders as you drive from Mildura to Renmark). I started first for split start reasons, so it was kind of fun having the area to myself. Got the heat of the day though somehow. Anyway, fun course, not especially tricky but enough to catch you out if you weren't playing attention. And definitely enjoyed running in very different deserty-style terrain with just small bushes, sandy banks and erosion gullies to go by. Had a good run, felt ok, got tired - and in the end wasn't too far behind the youngsters.

Then took longer going around the W10N shadow course with Florence crying that she hated the spikey desert and stopping to empty her shoes every 50m and Daisy simply refusing to walk at all so having to have a shoulder ride the whole way whilst I also had Isabelle trying to sleep on my tummy as I carried her too.

Running 33:00 [3] 7.3 km (4:31 / km) +30m 4:26 / km

Drove Wagga to Mildura today, which took us through some proper outback. I really enjoyed seeing nothing much along the way, and the girls were very good. The Hay plains reminded me of the New Forest in a way. Anyway, stopped in Hay for a prolonged lunch - a very well looked after town. Did a nice run on trails through big gum trees following the Murrumbidgee and felt alright. Mildura was very pleasant when we got there. Nice cabin right by the river, and very nice pizzas too.

Running 29:00 [3] 6.0 km (4:50 / km) +40m 4:41 / km

Getting into the swing of 9pm running. This time we had set off on our drive to SA, stopping in Forest Hill - suburb outside of Wagga. Stayed in a nice enough cabin, but right by the highway next to the airport - noisy night. Jog was nice enough and felt alright. The suburb reminded me of Weeping Cross, where I did most of my evening running in my teenage years.

Long run from home down through Hughes and then back around the ridges on fairly flat trails. Felt generally good except for being really bloated with a massive chicken and bacon burger and being forced to stop and retch a few times. Nice day though.

Orienteering race (Easter Day 3) 50:49 [4] 8.8 km (5:46 / km) +210m 5:10 / km

At Gumble Pinnacles, came 5th overall and 5th on the day (+9:40mins to Aston). Another hot sunny day but a more open course and my legs weren't feeling too bad. It was a chasing start so I was set off in 4th place in no man's land, 4mins adrift of Doyley and 4mins ahead of Alistair. Managed to lose 2mins on #2 which was a dead simple control on a rock in the open so was quite grumpy after that. It did give me the impetus to push through the open stuff though, which went pretty well and I was a bit more encouraged by my shape. I knew the last bit in the green would be hard and was full of best intentions to navigate carefully from the entry to the forest. Slight problem though was I managed to cross at the wrong crossing point! Schoolboy stuff. Did manage to relocate near the control but then my angles were all messed up so ended up making a bigger mistake in and around the circle, where Alistair duly popped up - another 3:30mins lost. We then played cat and mouse a bit over the last few, including a really dumb mistake at #26 of about 1min, before he then blitzed me up the hill to the last control. Good effort by the young lad. But I was pretty grumpy.

So an interesting weekend. Superb orienteering but lost a lot of confidence in my ability to both navigate and run at the same time, which is kind of important in orienteering. At least Grace managed to smash W21E :)

Orienteering race (Easter Day 2) 2:01:27 [4] 16.5 km (7:22 / km) +580m 6:16 / km

At Gumble Pinnacles, came 3rd, +10:31mins to Brodie. Absolute quality top notch orienteering. Still frothing at this one despite a pretty devastating run for me. Mainly low vis forest with huge rocks generally scattered about. Brutal course which was relentlessly challenging technically in so many different ways and super tough physically - and just one drink point on a near 30deg sunny day :s

Played it fairly cautious in general - but got off to a sloppy start with misses at #2 and #3 putting me back about 1:30mins. Then flowed well over the longer legs to #10 taking some safer routes that were more runnable. The percentages paid off and I caught sight of Brodie (2mins ahead starting) at the drinks point. Unfortunately a quick swig wasn't going to be wise and so he had long gone by the time I was ready to get going. Turns out I held the lead to #14 and #15 where I then had another scrappy section losing another min or so. #14 in particular was a super tricky control though.

Took more safe easy running routes to #17 and #18 and although Brodie had regained the lead on the day I was now winning overall. This was of course unbeknownst to me though as I was just feeling real tired and heavily cramping (despite multiple magnesium tablets before the run) and just felt like I'd been out plodding for aaages. And so it was I left #19 without bothering with my strategy of the easiest running route and subsequently got confused on a steep rocky slope where relocating just took a long long time. 8mins lost on a 2min leg - and the last tough control after going through so much to get there. At the time I was just glad to find the control and bumble around the fairly flat control pick to the finish. It was only after that I realised how costly that was. A start with the young boys in the chase would have been fun. Didn't sleep well that night - still buzzing from the challenge and rueing what happened.

Orienteering race (Easter Day 1) 44:00 [4] 6.9 km (6:23 / km) +210m 5:32 / km

At Noah's Ark Ridge - came 7th, +5:06mins to Aston and Doyley. Proper good middle distance race this in some real tricky weird linear rock stuff. Unfortunately I managed to balls the hedge control before we even got into the tough stuff! After that just had a frustrating run where I seemed to lose 30secs-1min on every 3rd control - perhaps rushing a little bit, and also struggling with some of the controls being tucked away behind features that were less prominent on the ground than on the map. Hot day and got super drained over the last few. Thought I'd be a lot further down than I was, but I think everyone was a bit scrappy. Awesome fun being back racing in this sort of terrain though.

Orienteering race (Easter Prologue) 16:11 [5] 3.7 km (4:22 / km) +80m 3:57 / km

At Charles Sturt Uni, Orange - came 9th, +1:44 to Aston, which is about what I expected. Not a bad run, felt like I was running ok most of the way, fairly drained at the end! Had Doyley (1min behind starting) slowly closing in on me through the course and just stayed ahead. Not a bad little uni campus but nothing particularly tricky.
