Running 1:00:00 [3] 12.1 km (4:58 / km) +200m 4:35 / km

Back at my Dad's in Stafford, where I 'grew up', for a couple of nights. Went for a classic old school loop on the Chase - from Brocton Coppice, to German Cemetary, trig on east Sherbrook, deer lawns, Stepping Stones and back up through the oaks on the coppice. Brought back a lot of memories which began with orienteering here 30 years ago. Lovely loop despite the grey day. Felt quite sluggish and weak still, but did a few strides which seemed to help a bit. Latest iteration on the injury seems to be some bruising behind my left knee where the calf and hamstring muscles meet whatever goes on in there. A bit sore when I stride out but it can only be minor due to still being able to run without it getting worse.

Orienteering 1:31:00 [3] 11.6 km (7:51 / km) +360m 6:47 / km

Orienteering at Wharncliffe, infamous for being tough and nasty. Ominous signs parking at a run down old factory. It did turn out to be very nice in some regards - sunny and still day, not overly brambly, beautiful forest scattered with impressive rocks. Only problem was moving through it. For me the running technique and strength required has long gone since getting a 2nd at BOC here once a long time ago - but also, although my hammy pain has now about gone, I've been left with no power to lift and push off. Also made a quite chunky mistake at #4 (big rock on slope but I had no idea how far along or up the slope I was). Couple of highlights were hearing a rustle in the trees and jumping with fright (as you do in Aus) only to find it was a squirrel, and also up on the moors on top running through a big flock of sheep being herded. Had fun though, despite being over 20mins down on Oli. Any residual disappointment was then neutralised with a huge Sunday roast and pint of Landlord at the Sportsman.

Orienteering 1:18:00 [3] 11.8 km (6:37 / km) +310m 5:51 / km

O race on Big Moor near Curbar in the Peaks. Beautiful sunny day and amazing views, really enjoyed being back on the moors. The race itself wasn't the best for me - I just couldn't lift my legs with the hamstring issues, as well as being horrendously unconditioned for this sort of thing. It got to the point of being quite amusing to me as I tried to figure out the least worst option between heather, bracken, marsh, tussock or high grass while stuck in an ice cold ditch up to my stomach. Relentlessly tough going but quite easy navigation - all the while though being afforded good views. So I did enjoy myself a lot all told.

Running 1:07:00 [3] 10.9 km (6:09 / km) +430m 5:08 / km

Walk up Hope Bowdler in the morning, then a big ploughman's lunch before driving to the Wrekin for a run on my way to Sheffield. I had brought a mid 1990s map from the last time I ran here (which was after a big night out at The Colloseum in Stafford) and had always been intrigued by the pit detail on the Ercall. So did a loop that took some of that in - some pretty cool detail there and suprisingly quite runnable. But also very muddy today so it was quite a struggle. Anyway eventually got to the top of the Wrekin on a beautiful clear day and enjoyed the views for a bit before jogging down and then driving off to sunny Sheffield.

Running 32:00 [1] 4.7 km (6:49 / km) +160m 5:49 / km

Jog on the Stiperstones with Heather. It was snowing and there was a reasonable dusting on the ground. A bit too cold and windy to be actually enjoyable - but there are some great views and the rocks on the top were pretty cool. Also quite a speccy trig point to bag. Escaped to a pub lunch pretty sharpish.

Running 37:00 [3] 6.0 km (6:10 / km) +250m 5:06 / km

Bruce Duncan popped around the cottage (thanks Bendover!) and took me on a nice loop up Hope Bowdler as the sun set. Great to catch up with him after so many years - odd to be reminiscing about stuff that happened over 25 years ago - crazy. Cracking evening with clear skies and great views.

Running 1:31:00 [3] 15.9 km (5:43 / km) +510m 4:56 / km

Morning loop around the Long Mynd. A bit windy but lovely and sunny - had the wild open fells mostly to myself and loved every minute of it. Hammy still meant I couldn't stride out but felt pretty good otherwise. Followed by a walk back up onto the tops and plenty of pies and scotch eggs.

Running 54:00 [3] 8.0 km (6:45 / km) +390m 5:26 / km

Very windy and drizzly run through the fields to the back of Caer Caradoc, then a steep climb up it and back down the lanes to the cottage. Was planning on running longer but the weather was just horrid! Also hammy wasn't great today. Really enjoyable again though. Sun came out not long after so we enjoyed a drive to Bishops Castle and a walk up The Lawley.

Running 47:00 [3] 8.3 km (5:40 / km) +300m 4:48 / km

Staying at a lovely cottage near Church Stretton, Shropshire with my family for a few days now. We did a walk up Caer Caradoc and the actual sun came out, so we got amazing views. I then squeezed in a run as the sun was starting to set - up Hope Bowdler hill. It was proper fell running and I loved every minute of it. (Except next run I will wear grippier shoes)

Running 44:00 [3] 7.9 km (5:34 / km) +130m 5:09 / km

Made it to England fairly painlessly and enjoyed the novelty of the 17hr Darwin to London stretch. Got out for an afternoon jog with Heather, possibly for the first time ever, on the Ridgeway from The Bell Inn at Aldworth. Very windy, grey and drizzly, plenty of mud, a trig point and lots of fields and hedgerows - followed by a couple of pints of ale from a glass with a handle under low beams by a grandfather clock. Marvellous.

Running 25:00 [1] 4.4 km (5:41 / km) +90m 5:09 / km

Bags all packed so squeezed in another test jog. Definite improvement on yesterday but still very limited motion in the leg. Was great to feel like I was running of sorts though, and I acknowledged the warmth and sun.

Running 16:00 [1] 2.5 km (6:24 / km) +50m 5:49 / km

Another hectic day at work but logging off for 3 weeks was a big relief. Saw John the physio during the day and he worked his magic and said it was more nerves and inflammation rather than actual damage, and also no problem to jog if my hammy would let me. So I did a test - incredibly tight and tender but I was able to shuffle. Did have to stop every 5mins but positive signs.

Note

Busy busy busy - working til near midnight tonight. Did get out for a short walk on dusk. Which was nice.

Note

Ok ok no exercise at all today.

Running 18:00 [1] 2.2 km (8:11 / km) +35m 7:35 / km

Long parental leave day and a nice sunset so I decided to do an experimental walk/jog with my new watch (replacement for the one I smashed in the fall yesterday). Turned out to be a bad idea - quelle surprise. For 15mins I alternated shuffling and walking and had no pain - just vaguely conscious I couldn't extend any further. I then kicked a rock on my bad leg and got shooting pain up through the hammy, which has remained uber tight for the 24hrs since. Oops. Interesting though - does seem to be a tightness rather than torn thing, and potentially some painfree shuffling might be possible next week.

Note

Reconfirmed my injury today in slightly unusual fashion. Isabelle was rolling down the driveway on her little bike slightly out of control so I ran after her instinctively. After a few paces my hamstring completely gave up and I fell forwards grazing my knees, hands, arms, shoulder and hip, while Isabelle fell off herself and has a couple of grazes (fortunately not as bad as mine). Looks like doing any running in England might be optimistic now. Physio on Friday though, so keeping fingers crossed.

Cycling 1:36:00 [3]

Lap of Lake BG from home. Ended up being a good hit out with the uphill last 10kms or so. Lovely sunny summer day and loads of people out enjoying the lake (not all aware of cyclists) and no obvious signs of the numpties who were out protesting yesterday. Some faith restored.

Cycling 57:00 [3]

Had a brainwave and decided to take the bike off the trainer and go for an actual bike ride, which turned out to be a lot less boring. Hammy didn't mind this so that was some consolation. Did a lap of Lake T and down to Woden.

Friday Feb 11, 2022 #

Note

Jog/walked around the playing fields - hammy didn't like it. Really hope this clears up next week

Started a slow jog but straight away realised I was still quite sore so gave up on that and did a spin for a bit but my heart wasn't really into it.

Running 13:00 [2] 2.5 km (5:12 / km)

Warm up while the kids played on the playground at Fadden Pines.

Orienteering 11:00 [5] 2.7 km (4:04 / km) +30m 3:52 / km

Bugger, went and injured myself - hopefully only temporarily. Easy sprint course around the pines at Fadden. Tried to push the pace but was some way behind Marty, partly due to being very tight in the legs. Tripped on a divot halfway round and pulled something in upper hammy/glute region.

Snuck out to the garage for a spin while Daisy was chilling after a big morning of Ready Set Dance and Isabelle was passed out as per normal at this time.
8 PM

Running 43:00 [3] 8.2 km (5:15 / km) +290m 4:27 / km

Late run up Taylor, feeling smug at the start having happened to start the run just after a heavy storm had passed and having a lovely rainbow to look at while the sun was setting. This was all shattered when another windy rain band came over as it got dark, making the rest of the run quite a bit of a battle. Feeling back to 'normal' again.

Running 30:00 [2] 6.1 km (4:55 / km) +160m 4:21 / km

Late jog out on the ridge on quite a cool evening once the kids were all tucked in. Good to get out - legs a bit achey but coldy symptoms just about gone.

Running 40:00 [2] 8.0 km (5:00 / km) +110m 4:41 / km

More easy running while I shake out the dregs of my symptoms - legs felt alright though. Farrer/Isaacs today.

Running 37:00 [2] 7.3 km (5:04 / km) +150m 4:36 / km

Easy jog on Farrer/Wanniassa. Legs ok but still feels like I'm sweating out corona.

Running 31:00 [2] 5.8 km (5:21 / km) +115m 4:52 / km

Early jog on Farrer now that quarantine had ended. After about 200m it was longer than all the walking cumulative that I'd done in the past week so unsurprisingly I felt quite clunky. It was also very cold so I wore a jumper. So good to get out of the house though - even if I still have a few coldy symptoms.

Thought I might return to AP in anticipation of a slightly more interesting few weeks after a yearish in the dark (on Strava only, although I suppose actually AP is darker in a literal sense). Summary of last 5 months - did 129 days consecutive running but with a few fitness highs and lows, then got stumped by Covid. Today was my last day of quarantine in my downstairs enclave (including from the rest of the family who were quarantining upstairs) and I felt a bit better so did a short spin on the turbo in the garage.
