Gardening 1:30:00 [1]

It has come to this... (logging gardening)
Possible back injury, stupid picking thing up thing.

Planted pole beans, bush beans, spinach, bok choi, parsley, dill, red lettuce, green butterhead lettuce, romaine lettuce, borage, potatoes, onions. I'll plant the shell beans after a round of spinach. If I get to it today: basil on the porch, a couple more potato bags, and some square pots. Also flowers in flower boxes. And start peppers and tomatoes inside. I tried starting some peppers in February or March but they didn't grow. Not enough attention paid.

Last year the rabbit ate the tops off the pea plants so we didn't get many peas. This year therefore I'm not planting peas, but now I think I should have because the rabbit will just move on to something else.

Note

About to have the second of two JST parent meetings (two so people could make one).

In more detail:

Training & preparing for Europe (Erin)
The goal is that when the juniors get to Europe this summer, they will train pretty hard for a month and a half. It is important that the athletes show up physically ready to do the training; among other things this is important for avoiding injury.
Races this summer: Jukola is a big race and requires preparation, especially for the night legs. The Norwegian O Fest is fairly competitive, and juniors will run their age categories. We'll probably do a race 10 days prior to JWOC in Bulgaria. JWOC itself.
Until now Erin has talked informally with juniors when they haven't been meeting their commitment to train. Starting now he'll be keeping track more formally whether juniors attend the team meetings and get in their 5 hours of training, broken out by long run, agility, interval, strength & conditioning, map (armchair), orienteering, another run. Some juniors get some of their training through other sports after working that out with Erin.
Erin will issue warnings after 2-3 weeks of not meeting training obligation; if this happens repeatedly he may have a conversation with the junior and parents about stepping down from their JWOC spot if they're not going to be ready to compete.
There are 3.5 months until JWOC, and there is a lot of time for people to be able to get in shape. It is super important to get the training done.
Communication from Erin will be proactive, and parents will be contacted before the situation is critical.

Goals of the Europe trip (Erin)
Erin plans to balance hard training with fun, and get some good racing in. Each day will be a combination of orienteering and physical training.
The goal is to learn how to train and enjoy that process. When things are fun, training is fun and people are healthy, and there is not a lot of burnout. The summer will be fun, intense, experiential.
Jukola will be an awesome experience because you get on the starting line at JWOC, and there are 30 teams in a relay race; that’s pretty big coming from the USA, but if come from Jukola with 1500 people on starting line, not as daunting.
Norwegian fest - some of the best orienteers in the world.
A lot of people think of JWOC as the epitome of racing for juniors, but there are a lot of other big competitive races. It's important to do the best you can in these other races. As juniors transition to the senior team level, there are World Cup and other highly competitive races

WUOC
College students (or entering college students) can try out for US WUOC team at DVOA meet or by submitting a petition

Trip logistics (Barb)
We reviewed aspects of the trip including adults traveling with the team, opportunities to interact with local coaches & orienteers, and the work that Liisa, Cristina and Pavlina are doing to help with logistics and connections.

Allen asked about alternatives to the Norway portion; these include the European Youth Orienteering Championships in Macedonia, adjacent to Bulgaria, at the end of June. Other options include a 3 day race in Slovenia June 20-22, a race in Germany June 27-29, and in Italy June 27-29. Please contact Allen if you haven't already made arrangements and would like to find out more about these possibilities.

Plan flights to arrive within a couple hours of the arrival times of the other travelers if possible (e.g., July 2nd in Sofia).

Fundraising
We'll make some changes to the flyer: perks for < $2500; who to contact, who to make checks out to; receipt that can be given to them immediately. See the document that Erin sent around previously.
You can ask for a donation to the US team (tax deductible) or for support for your own trip or both.
