shoes: brooks trance9 mark 2

Day off so went out through Bishop Down to Laverstock. Footpaths were really icy so ended up running on the road with the traffic. Was tinking about taking the path to teh top of Laverstock down, but it was covered in ice and snow and kids were coming down on sleds. Went around the base running in the snow on the edge of the path. Was Ok until I got to teh road at the other end.. Sections were covered in ice for about 500m. Had to pick the way really carefully. Once that section was over it was OK running on the road again.

running 43:10 [3] 9.6 km (4:30 / km) +100m 4:16 / km
shoes: brooks trance9 mark 2

Lunchtime run through the villages and back. One section of road hadn't been gritted and was very icy. Best footing along that section was to run in the snow on the side of the road.

Dstl has a strict policy on cost recovery and a requirement on staff to log their time against cost codes. They have a cost code for almost everything. Today's staff news sheet had a request for people to donate samples for a trial to determine the stability of human faecal waste bags and the integrity of the seling mechanism at extremes of environmental temperatures. Donners will be provided with a cost code to book their time against whilst producing the samples.
Me thinks this is taking the whole cost recovery thing a bit too far.

running 1:04:00 [3] 14.0 km (4:34 / km) +50m 4:29 / km
shoes: brooks trance9 mark 2

Headed out in the evening on the footpaths aaround Salisbury and out to Quidhampton and back. Only some of the paths were free of snow and ice, so progress was a bit slower than it ight otherwise have been.
We have booked to go to Istanbul over the christmas break, but earlier in the week actaully departing was looking a bit doubtful. As a back up plan I looked at options for the UK and found that the entire UK rail network is shut down on Christmas day and Boxing day. Also on Christmas day there are no buses and the London underground is shut, meaning thereis no public transport across the country. If you need to go somewhere and don't have a car you need to leave early or walk. Boxing day isn't much better with only a token bus service and a reduced underground service in London. Outside london there is nothing. Strange for a country that relies on its public transport service to get people around.

running 45:35 [3] 10.0 km (4:34 / km) +120m 4:18 / km
shoes: brooks trance 9 (blue)

Work was fairly quiet, with a lot of people opting not to come in due to snow. Took the oportunity to head out for a run at lunchtime again. The prefered route out work is a gentle down hill for 1.7 km. That also means that it is up hill on the way back. Lots of snow in the surrounding fields, looks very picturesque.

Monday Dec 20, 2010 #

running 52:30 [3] 11.5 km (4:34 / km)
shoes: brooks trance 9 (blue)

Second enforced rest day yesterday, due to the conditions. The footpaths were really icy and dangerous. Didn't fancy running/skating. Decided not to risk it and hoped it would clear. It is a matter of the gritters treating the footpaths.
Today took my gear to work and went for a run a lunchtime. Only just in time though. By the time I had finished it was snowing heavily and we were sent home while we could still get out of the car park.
A number of the roads around work had been treated with grit and so were clear of snow and ice, but they also don't have a lot of traffic, so they are good for running along. Differnet location and daylight. Double bonus.

Saturday Dec 18, 2010 #

Note
(rest day)

Looked out the window this morning and opted for a rest day.

Friday Dec 17, 2010 #

running 43:10 [3] 9.3 km (4:38 / km) +50m 4:31 / km
shoes: brooks trance9 mark 2

Had a meeting in Portsdown which meant an early morning. The bonus was we finished at 2:30 so got home and out for a run before it got dark. Got to see some of the places I have been running through in the dark the last couple of weeks.

Thursday Dec 16, 2010 #

running 48:50 [3] 10.4 km (4:42 / km)
shoes: brooks trance 9 (blue)

Was going to go at lunch time, but when I got to the bus stop I realised I had forgotten my gear. Had to wait until I got home. First half was OK, but then it started to sleet and finally snow over the second part. The weather has turned cold again.
AFter a quick shower headed down to the market square to see the lantern parade. There were hundreds of lanterns on the wlk through the streets. They all collected in the arket square. It was an amazing sight.

orienteering race 59:50 [4] *** 9.7 km (6:10 / km) +200m 5:36 / km
ahr:158 max:180 spiked:13/16c shoes: sarva ms

First venture into UK orienteering. Race was in the new forest, most in heath. The sun was out, but it was still cold. Ground was wet, with large areas and sheets of ice. All the puddles on the tracks were solid. Bit of a mixed bag, running well, but navigation was a bit sloppy in places. First control was OK, then didn't get the exit line right, crossed the stream and the slope looked all wrong, worked it out and corrected. Lost about 1:30 or so. Clean through 3 then sloppy after crossing the stream on the wya to 4. Hit 5 and had to run the short leg back to 4 then back to 5, anotehr 2 minutes lost. 6 to 10 were good, then went wide on the way to 11. 12 to 15 were OK then missed 16 by a bit, another 20 seconds.
Feet were freezing by the end. Had to crunch through ice and snow for a large part of the course.

Saturday Dec 4, 2010 #

running 48:00 [3] 10.0 km (4:48 / km)
shoes: brooks trance9 mark 2

It rained last night so the snow has all but disappeared. It has been replaced by ice sheets which form when the temperature drops below zero, which at the momnet is often. Needed to pick the line along the footpath carefully to avoid skating.

Friday Dec 3, 2010 #

running 1:03:50 [3] 13.6 km (4:42 / km)
shoes: brooks trance 9 (blue)

Carefully chosen route to avoid the ice. Didn't get a run yesterday due to heavy snow overnight. Today there had been time for the gritters to clear some of the roads and foorpaths. Only the very occasional icy patch as long as you stuck to the major roads. Side roads were different with snow and ice the norm.

Wednesday Dec 1, 2010 #

running 46:10 [4] 10.6 km (4:21 / km)
shoes: brooks trance9 mark 2

Got invited to training with the local club. This is a regular Wednesday night gathering. Despite the cold there were about 50 people there. 3 different runs to pick from. Kept up a fast pace the whole way and enjoyed hte experience.
