Orienteering race (Score-o #4) 59:22 [0] 7.31 km (8:07 / km)
spiked:18/23c

Nepean Sportsplex -- Summer Solstice #4 (handicap = 5)

Score = 709/1000

Last event of the series, and last event until O-Fest. Say it ain't so!

Had an especially tough time with two of the controls, one of which I was looking for in completely the wrong part of the map, d'oh!

Was happy with my decision to again push at the very end to try to squeeze in a few more controls, which worked out, coming in with 38 seconds to spare, but boy did I have to push. Since starting orienteering this spring, I have surely gained some running stamina through participating in all these events. No way could I have done all this running a few months ago. But, I still do a ton of walking, so there's still much room for improvement.

In the end I had a lot of fun with the series!

Next year, my handicap will drop to 3 since I'll no longer have newbie status. Will have to amp up my running stamina to the next level, to make up for it!

Frank Ryan Park and Woodroffe High School -- Summer Solstice #3 (handicap = 5)

Score = 753/1000

Boy, these score-o's sure allow for lots of running!

Ran hard this week, really wanted to find as many controls as I could. At a certain point, I had to make a decision whether or not to push and go for 42/43/44. Decided to go for it and had to run/walk like I've never run/walked before, or risk being way late! Made it back with a minute to spare.

Stony Swamp -- Summer Solstice #2 (handicap = 5)

Score = 731/1000

Ankle all better, phew!

Better than last week, no mega brain freeze this time. Some controls were easier than others. For quite a few of them, there were several of us around. I must say, some days I wonder -- with some anxiety! -- how badly I'd fare if there were no one else on the course!

Time penalty of 2 for being 12 seconds late.

Orienteering (Short Advanced) 1:27:42 [0] 8.05 km (10:54 / km)
(injured)

Timm Road

Hot hot day! I think it was in the high 20s by the time I finished, plus humidex.

Pretty straightforward and smooth although with some controls that took a bit of finding. #1 was tricky. Interestingly, watching the GPS afterwards of not only my run but others as well, the GPS shows several of us way overshooting the curve in the path near #1. I really don't remember going past the curve at all.

Did something to my ankle about half way through but was able to continue. Hoping it will be ok in time for Tuesday's Score-o!

Sad to see the end of the spring classic meets!

Orienteering race (Score-o #1) 57:03 [0] 6.13 km (9:18 / km)
spiked:11/22c

Cedarview -- Summer Solstice #1 (handicap = 5)

Score = 544/1000

First attempt at a score-o. Didn't have much of a goal or plan in mind. But sure got a good work-out, lots of running!

Struggled with a few of the controls and in the end found only 11 out of the 27 that were on the course, or out of 22 required for a "full course" for my handicap. After one of the controls, I got totally messed up -- even though I was **right at** the control, I couldn't seem to match up the map with the landscape to continue my intended course. After much time wastage standing around scratching my head, must admit I had a moment of thinking I should just call it quits, having wasted so much time (about 12 minutes until I found another control). But that would have been dumb. So, I fumbled onward and eventually figured myself out and kept going, albeit on a modified plan. Definitely satisfied with the workout, but would love to find more controls next time.

Orienteering race (Short Advanced) 2:18:38 [0] 7.73 km (17:56 / km)

Hidden Meadow

Second time trying a Short Advanced. Could have tried the Intermediate, but the controls seemed to be mostly on or very near trails.... So, I chose to try my thumb-compassed hand at the SA!

The map was crazy busy so I knew it was going to be hard, and -- it sure was! 2 hours and 19 minutes of mistakes and extra kilometers! And mud (a muddy orienteer is a happy orienteer)! And -- ticks (well ok, those I could do without)!

My run today had a real estate theme: "re-location, re-location, re-location!" So many mistakes and extra kilometers -- but a fun, muddy adventure. Full disclosure: At one point between 12 and 13 I was trying to re-locate yet again, when another SA person came by and at my request, pointed out where I was. I should have spent more time re-locating, and it was such an obvious spot to be able to locate on the map: At the base of a huge cliff that was RIGHT ON the trail. But, it was getting late, and I had no idea if I would see anyone else again. (Well, not EVER again, I hoped I wasn't THAT lost.) So, I succumbed.

And yes, ticks! Found 4 or 5 crawling around on me when back at the car, plus one who had already bit into my stomach.
