Backcountry skiing 4:47:46 [2] 88.0 km (3:16 / km) +623m 3:09 / km

Adventuring with Carla at Mt Kelly in Manning Park. Beautiful area, though the visibility wasn't so great today. Very deep powder on the north-facing slope after we'd summitted, but we didn't go too far down as we're both pretty bad at skiing in deep stuff, and didn't fancy having to break trail for too long on the way back up to the ridge. The descent on the south side back to the car was more survival skiing, with crust on dust conditions. A good day out in the forest.

Mt Fromme orienteering. It's a new map that's mostly auto-generated with a few random boulders shown. Lovely area though, and some really runnable sections.

I chose fun/forest routes rather than fast routes, and had a blast. Navigation was good. There were a couple of sections where you could take controls in any order (3-8 and 11-15). Unfortunately I was really bad at spotting the boxes, and navigated to both 3 and 11 before realising they were in boxes. So my overall route was sub-optimal and involved way more climb that was necessary.

Downhill skiing 1:54:59 [1] 14.67 km (7:50 / km) +2023m 4:38 / km

Bluebird day at Cypress with lovely soft snow. There must be a Pro-D day somewhere as there were lots of kids up there, and the lineups were way longer than expected for a weekday. Stuck to Raven Ridge and Sky Chair.

Lovely afternoon on Cypress. It had snowed in the morning, but was sunny by the time I got up there. Bumped into Stan.

Downhill skiing 2:11:14 [1] 14.38 km (9:08 / km) +1639m 5:49 / km

Downhill at Cypress with Carla. It was quiet today, so we did laps of Lions Chair, which normally has really long lineups. Explored lots of tree areas we haven't done before, which was really fun. Every run we did was somewhere new.

Beautiful evening on Cypress. The central trails were soft, the upper trails were incredibly hard and slick, and the eastern trails were just too damn steep. So I never got into a gliding groove, but still had a lovely time.

They're very close to having the final bit of unopened trail ready. The switchbacks on Brothers Canyon East just need a couple more passes with the groomer and then they'll be all good.

Darkish, snowyish run through PSP. Pretty and quiet.

Snowy run through PSP. Everything is looking very pretty, and lots of people were out enjoying the snow. There was one lady classic skiing on the playing field, but it looked like her tracks were deep enough to expose the grass, so not ideal conditions.

Very quiet today. Maybe -7C puts off a lot of the snowshoers?

The snow was getting pretty sandy on the lower trails, and only got worse after the groom. I spent most of my time on the upper and east trails, which were in better shape and completely deserted. I probably should have re-waxed my skis for the lower temperature though, as I didn't have much glide.

Beautifully clear views over to Grouse from Powerline this afternoon.

Downhill skiing 3:37:08 [1] 20.34 km (10:41 / km) +2621m 6:30 / km

Cypress with Carla. My pass doesn't let me do downhill on weekends in Jan/Feb, but Carla had a spare corporate pass so I got to ski for free :)

Beautiful blue sky day, and the snow was better than expected. Did a few laps of Eagle while the lineups were still short, then over to Raven, then Sky Chair. An excellent outing.

Fun Darkside at Burke Mountain.

There are some lovely pockets of forest on this map, and I appreciate Joanne pre-running the course to make sure she used as much nice stuff as possible. Adam's winning time of 57 minutes for 5.1km straight line will clarify that "lovely" and "nice" are very much relative terms.

Very reflective pinflags tonight, so was able to take some riskier route choices. Compass-work was mostly okay, but I found myself drifting a few times - need to remember to check the compass more often at night.

Bonus points to Joanne for supplying cookies at the finish line!

Easy cruise at Hollyburn. The snow was very sticky, and the eastern trails were quite deep. Did a couple of trails for the first time this season (full West Lake loop, up Mobraten, and Zig Zag). Had to herringbone walk up a few of the steep bits as the conditions were not letting be glide uphill at all. Very quiet for a Saturday.

Downhill at Cypress. The snow on the ground was really saturated with water, and the snow in the air was turning to rain as a I left. Very quiet (by downhill standards).

Ski-O at Cypress. Lots of fun, though I definitely had a huge advantage doing it today on hardpack rather than in a foot of powder over the weekend. Generally good conditions, and nice to be out in the sunshine.

Looks like JRance found the optimal route, but I was only a little bit off. I also ended up doing a full loop of the Unknown Lake meadow area, as the 2020 version of the map is very bad and I couldn't figure out where the control was supposed to be. I've put a 2021 update on the website in case somebody is planning another event this year.

I need to find a better way to hold my map, as I dropped it a couple of times. Tying it to my wrist with elastic seems like a good option.
