Venla relay, 1st leg

First time running Venla and first time in the mass start of a major relay! I was a bit nervous but the start was actually okay. Super warm weather and very dusty, could've used more than two drink stations.

You know you nailed the route choice to the first control when about 700m in you're all alone..... I think I just confused the paths in the beginning, followed them too far and that point just cut across the open area where I was, all alone. Also bit hesitation closer to the circle so not the safe start to the race I was aiming for.

Should've known this but still got surprised by the amount of people in the forest and how much I just ran with people. Earlier years I've been more alone. Probably that's why I don't remember even running some of the legs..

On the way to 4 I made the first mistake of reading a suppa as a hill. Didn't affect my route choice or running really but was funny!

I felt 5-8 were the only potentially tricky controls. 5 was easy because of an open area and also because it was a tv control so all had it. To 6 I just followed a queue. 7 I took it safe taking the trail. 8 I was going to go trail again. Then somehow I decided not to follow the path down the hill but stay high. Which wouldve been fine, except the control was down... Luckily cut across the crowd coming up from the control so fixed it fast.

9 I have no memory of my routechoice. Looks good on QR though so cant complain! Rest of the controls were pretty straightforward then, trail running. Looking back my routechoice to the spectator control wasn't optimal in either of the races.

Overall I thought the course was surprisingly easy. I was also surprised by how much people worked together in the forest and at times I actually found it annoying when people started asking for the next code and 'what's our plan?'. Won't miss running first leg next year but want to experience Jukola start in 2020 (with no night-o). Physically I felt okay, hot and dry weather was tough and could've done slightly better on a colder day but still felt okayish. I'm just not fast or strong enough physically to do great even when orienteering goes well.

Leg length was 6,1km and I ran 7,5km. Official time was 1h 11min and my watch time is 1h 13min (stopped it only a bit after changeover).

Final leg result was 988th out of 1577. Overall KeKi 1 was 561st.
