MTB (Not O) 1:57:00 [3]

Completed the final quadrant of the 5k circle. Again, much was off road, including the Royal George Company, St Justs Point and New St Mungo and the unmapped Jackass Flat Reserve, as well a s a number of other suburban bush reserves I had not previously visited.
With that task completed, Dan can lift the 5k barrier now.

MTB (Not O) 50:00 [2]

Low effort ride

Sunday Aug 29, 2021 #

Running 38:37 [3] 5.25 km (7:21 / km) +73m 6:53 / km
shoes: Speedcross 5 8th pair

The sort of run one does when one doesn't feel like doing a run.
I seem to do quite a few of these.

Saturday Aug 28, 2021 #

Note

Perfect still, sunny day for an event at Tarnagulla, except for the lock down.

MTB (Not O) 1:45:00 [3]

Next quadrant of the 5k circle. Managed about 80% off bitumen roads. Bendigo Creek Trail, Myers Flat map, Rocky Rises map, Ninnes grave, Royal George map. One to go.

Friday Aug 27, 2021 #

Running 1:16:00 [3] 10.21 km (7:27 / km) +130m 7:00 / km
shoes: Speedcross 5 8th pair

Lovely weather. Would have been enjoyable placing the controls for Tarnagulla.

MTB (Not O) 1:50:00 [3]

Another quarter slice of my 5k circle. This time from Edwardes Rd to the Bendigo Ck trail through One Tree Hill and Diamond Hill. Slow going as Edwardes Rd through OTH is out of my bounds. Managed one crash into a tree in the rough stuff near the channel. Decided I needed to take it easy. I don't think this is a good moment to be putting demands on casualty staff.

Running 50:56 [3] 7.19 km (7:05 / km) +102m 6:37 / km
shoes: Speedcross 5 8th pair

Forced myself into a run. First run in long tights for the year. Obviously still winter.

Tuesday Aug 24, 2021 #

MTB (Not O) 25:00 [4]

Went for a short ride, so made it a hard ride.

Monday Aug 23, 2021 #

Note

Our decision to cancel the ferry six weeks ago is looking sadly prophetic.

Saturday Aug 21, 2021 #

MTB (Not O) 2:00:00 [3]
shoes: Speedcross 5 8th pair

Only got a third of the way around our 5k circle. Thankfully we can ride on the channel track in Wildflower Drive and One Tree Hill.

Walking 4:00:00 [2] 10.6 km (22:38 / km) +700m 17:01 / km

Walking in the out of the way areas of South Korong. Terrain much better than I expected, And I expected it to be OK. Lots of opportunity for route choice course setting, avoid cliffs, avoid green, avoid climb. Can't do them all, so what do you choose... etc.

Tuesday Aug 17, 2021 #

Walking 2:30:00 [1] 10.0 km (15:00 / km)

Note

Spent afternoon checking the newest batch of control sites around Tarnagulla. The event won't be the intense sluice terrain initially planned, but will still be fun. Lots of scattered mining detail, some sluice country on courses 1 and 2, and even some route choice. Very open mallee country.

Monday Aug 16, 2021 #

Running long 1:11:41 [3] 10.37 km (6:55 / km) +60m 6:43 / km
shoes: Speedcross 5 8th pair

Note

The Tarnagulla event will only cater for regional orienteers. Spent this afternoon designing new courses in a different part of the map, using half as many controls. Will check sites tomorrow. Plan is to use the original courses on the better part of the map next year. Third time lucky? Of course, the risk now is that the lock down will be extended to regional Victoria based on the sewerage testing.
So if you are allowed to, the invitation is now for the Poverty Reef map rather than Tappit Hen.

Real Orienteering race (Stumpy Gully) 49:02 [4] *** 6.48 km (7:34 / km) +145m 6:48 / km
spiked:8/8c shoes: Speedcross 5 8th pair

Local event Stumpy Gully.
Feeling fortunate.
Rare day when both Julie and I avoided errors of note. I was ahead of her by three minutes, but half of that is because she stopped for a micturation. I will be coaching her about pre-event preparation next Saturday at Kangaroo Gully (assuming no lock down).

Friday Aug 13, 2021 #

Note

After 18 holes of golf, spent the afternoon exploring granite dome country and also discovering unreconstructed sand mining terrain. The latter is great terrain totally unmappable with the current ISOM specification. Also found some very pleasant granite terrain. Probably too small for a major event, and probably unlikely to get a permit.

Walking 2:30:00 [1] 10.0 km (15:00 / km)

A golfing Stephen Bradbury morning. I managed my usual small number of pars - three. Normally I come last on the par count. On Tuesday the winner had three birdies and a number of pars. But today no-one else could manage more than one par. Something in the water.

Thursday Aug 12, 2021 #

Running warm up/down 7:49 [3] 1.07 km (7:18 / km) +20m 6:41 / km
shoes: Speedcross 5 8th pair

Running tempo 11:42 [4] 2.0 km (5:51 / km) +25m 5:30 / km
shoes: Speedcross 5 8th pair

Running tempo 11:19 [4] 2.0 km (5:40 / km) +25m 5:20 / km
shoes: Speedcross 5 8th pair

Decided I had to try just a little harder than has been the effort over the past fortnight. Seem to have lost 30 seconds on my 2k tempo runs. I suppose it could be worse.

Wednesday Aug 11, 2021 #

Running 38:10 [3] 5.38 km (7:06 / km) +50m 6:47 / km
shoes: Speedcross 5 8th pair

Hard to find motivation

Tuesday Aug 10, 2021 #

Note

So we have local orienteering again. This creates a bit of a dilemma. The Tarnagulla event was planned on the expectation of Melbourne attendances, but this may well not happen. So do I put out 45 controls in the best part of the map for maybe 30 attendees, or do I design new courses in the lesser part of the map using many fewer controls. Leaning towards the latter. Will make a final decision a few days before the event (28 August). Then again, it may well be cancelled like last year.

Walking 2:30:00 [1] 10.0 km (15:00 / km)

Glorious day for a wander over 18 holes. Haven't been many days like this over winter.

Sunday Aug 8, 2021 #

Running long 1:04:54 [3] 9.14 km (7:06 / km) +80m 6:48 / km
shoes: Speedcross 5 8th pair

No Olympic marathon victories for me.

Note

I fear Gulag Gladys needs to go a step further in her lock down.

May I recommend closing all take away coffee vendors.

Based on observations during the run, the business model of take away coffee is based upon providing plausible deniability for socialising and mask removal.

Friday Aug 6, 2021 #

Running 35:45 [3] 5.03 km (7:06 / km) +80m 6:35 / km
shoes: Speedcross 5 8th pair

Thursday Aug 5, 2021 #

Walking 1:00:00 [1] 4.0 km (15:00 / km)

Last of the control tagging.
Maps set up.
Time to get onto something else.
Still wonderful terrain. Over 2 kilometers of continuous sluicing and dredge holes.

Wednesday Aug 4, 2021 #

Walking 2:00:00 [1] 8.0 km (15:00 / km)

Tagging controls for event on the Tappit Hen - Poverty Reef maps around Tarnagulla. As you map an area, the area starts to feel familiar and the magic disappears. To come back over a year later (due to covid event cancellations last year) the magic is again obvious. This is wonderful terrain.

Tuesday Aug 3, 2021 #

Walking 1:15:00 [1] 5.0 km (15:00 / km)

Gave up half way, went home and back to bed. Slept until almost 4. Who said the second AZ is without side effects?

Monday Aug 2, 2021 #

Running hills 8:51 [3] 1.25 km (7:05 / km) +100m 5:03 / km
shoes: Speedcross 5 8th pair

Only half the normal hills prescription. Realised too late that it was wise to do the run before the injection.

Running warm up/down 7:30 [3] 1.25 km (6:00 / km)
shoes: Speedcross 5 8th pair
