Run 2:05:53 [2] 23.16 km (5:26 / km) +400m 5:00 / km

BBM long run, taking it easy. Very overgrown now in parts, getting stung to bits

Weather started a bit poopy, but came out in lovely sunshine in time for the top of Blackford and the best view of the city <3

6 PM

Swimming 30:07 [1] 1.3 km (23:10 / km)

Much the same vibes as Monday, and near identical speed too.
Clearly have 1 swimming gear, so need to actually work on that. Did say this 2 weeks ago too, but this time I mean it :o

Thursday Jul 29, 2021 #

Cycling 48:51 [1] 21.89 km (26.9 kph) +250m
shoes: Eastway R3

To Gladhouse with Ricky and James, rather windy

Swimming 40:37 [1] 1.7 km (23:54 / km)

To the far island and then back again. Quite choppy on the way out, but then wind faded a bit so didn't even get blown back to shore

Cycling 49:54 [1] 26.4 km (31.7 kph) +90m
shoes: Eastway R3

Back home via Carrington and Roslin, in what ended up being lovely weather

Monday Jul 26, 2021 #

5 PM

Swimming 30:09 [1] 1.3 km (23:12 / km)

Not feeling too sprightly, tired after a long day of sitting around doing nothing

Sunday Jul 25, 2021 #

10 AM

Run 1:43:03 [2] 19.68 km (5:14 / km) +130m 5:04 / km
shoes: Waverider 24s

Sunday with Matt for the first time in ages and ages. Had missed the crap chat tbh

His knees were quite sore and I was rather sleepy, so was happy to go for an easy one to Portobello. Got ourselves an ice cream which was a wonderful treat.

One more reasonably big week, then an easier one for the Scottish 6 days, or in my case, the Scottish 1 day

Saturday Jul 24, 2021 #

2 PM

Cycling 2:39:47 [2] 72.97 km (27.4 kph) +600m
shoes: Eastway R3

Work in the morning, so got out post lunch with Leutch.

Gladhouse loop + castles extension on a beautifully sunny day. Taking it easy, so a lovely cruise around with a few kicks on the climbs.
Very nice.

Friday Jul 23, 2021 #

5 PM

Swimming 44:24 [1] 1.9 km (23:22 / km)

Back in the pool, not feeling inspired so just did 1900m. Arms a bit tired after all the swimming earlier in the week, but not too awful

Thursday Jul 22, 2021 #

5 PM

Cycling 1:55:33 [1] 48.78 km (25.3 kph) +350m
shoes: Eastway R3

No cycling intervals again, but I figured there's plenty time to be on a wattbike once the nice weather goes away.

With Stephen and Will on an easy Gladhouse loop, coming back in through Lasswade.
Nice and chill, chatting away, and then I put it one effort to try and finally get myself the KOM of Top of the hill to the Meadows. Got lucky with the lights at the start, screwed over by them a bit at the end, but dug in for the final climb to claim it with 5 seconds to spare.

Genuinely think it could go a minute faster with the perfect light luck though, may have to attempt it in the middle of the night some time

Wednesday Jul 21, 2021 #

5 PM

Cycling 44:53 [2] 21.79 km (29.1 kph) +250m
shoes: Eastway R3

Everyone had been mega keen for another Gladhouse swim, and it was yet another wonderful evening so it would have been rude not to.

Wanted to get a cycle in too though, so hopped on the bike to get there

Swimming 52:38 [1] 2.2 km (23:55 / km)

Stephen wanted to go round the far island, and I was brimming with confidence so agreed.
No worries as it turned out, was very achievable! Very glad to have finally done the race distance and then some, and feeling good about doing it on the day now.
Still 9 weeks to go, so will hopefully speed it up a bit by then too :)

Cycling 37:24 [1] 21.71 km (34.8 kph) +50m
shoes: Eastway R3

Only one way to get back home, but since it was nearly all downhill it wasn't too arduous!

Tuesday Jul 20, 2021 #

5 PM

Cycling 1:01:05 [1] 26.93 km (26.5 kph) +250m
shoes: Eastway R3

Easy loop round Rosslynlee, more unreal weather

Run intervals 1:05:11 [3] 13.45 km (4:51 / km) +150m 4:35 / km
shoes: X-Talon 230

Then to make this a completely identical day to last Tuesday, some intervals.

4x8 minutes [3 minutes]

Monday Jul 19, 2021 #

6 PM

Swimming 32:21 [1] 1.5 km (21:34 / km)

Our kitchen roof had fallen in over the weekend, so I'd resigned myself to not doing anything today - although dragging out 35kg of plaster probably counts as S&C

Emily suggested an evening Gladhouse though, and we met up with Caitlin and Stephen there. Was super good, and was very glad I went!

Another big confidence boost to be feeling like it was so easy in the water, just hanging round the near island.
Even managed to do some sighting so was a bit less of a zig-zag

Sunday Jul 18, 2021 #

11 AM

Run 3:28:39 [2] 25.7 km (8:07 / km) +970m 6:50 / km
shoes: X-Talon 230

Calum headed home in the morning, so Mark and I went and got some more Munros.

The six on the East of Glen Shee this time, to make it double digits for the weekend.
Started with 2km of road running down from the car park which was a little grim, but would rather get it over and done with early on.

Immediately sweated off all my suncream as we made our way up Carn an Tuirc, was another very nice day.
Once we were up it was nice to know we'd basically finished all the climbing, and it was good running too - everything was baked dry as a bone. Went straight across the bog to Tolmount and then Tom Buidhe soon followed, before wandering up Cairn of Claise.

More easy ridge running to get Glas Maol and then there was finally a bit of a slog up the rocky crap to get Creag Leacach for the last one. Doubled back along the ridge and contoured round and down through the ski tows to the car.

Lovely jubbly, another wonderful run :)

10 AM

Run 5:28:19 [2] 36.01 km (9:07 / km) +1500m 7:33 / km
shoes: X-Talon 230

With Markus Purkis and CalMc for a very enjoyable day in the hills.

After a lovely camp down by the Dee we met Calum at the cars and got the show on the road. Jogged round to the Linn of Dee car park and then headed up Glen Lui towards Derry Lodge.

Moseyed on up Glen Derry sweating profusely in the sunshine, and did not see the very vague path up the hill. Eventually realised we'd missed it, so slogged up through the heather to get Beinn Breac.

Mark got fed up of me putting the map away and took it off me, before promptly dropping it in the gale force winds which we'd just entered. Fortunately recovered after an amusing chase, the map went back to safety with me.

Some more slogging commenced across the peat bog to pick up Beinn A' Chaorainn, then we dropped off West to the bealach.

Continuing the slog theme of the run, staggered on up West to summit Beinn Mheadhoin. Was exceedingly windy on the ridge once again, and after scrambling up the back side of the tor it was nearly impossible to stand in the hurricane up top.

Finally we were back on some nice paths though, and so swiftly passed Loch Etchachan and up Derry Cairngorm for the final Munro of the day.
A few more had been on the optional menu, but Calum had had his fill of hills and miles, and Mark and I were only too happy to keep the run "shorter"

Lovely descent back down to the Lodge in the blazing sunshine, and it was quite nice to be out of the hair dryer like wind.
Then it was just the final bonky slog of the day back along the track to the tent, delightful.

Very enjoyable day out, the longest run I've done by some way, but was feeling pretty excellent throughout. Great weather, great hills, great company - awesome

Swimming 39:21 [1]

Early one due to heading up to Braemar this evening.

Watch was a Judas and didn't count laps properly, but I think I was somewhere in the 1.8km region. We shall never know!

Thursday Jul 15, 2021 #

6 PM

Cycling 1:33:36 [2] 48.22 km (30.9 kph) +350m
shoes: Eastway R3

Extremely hot and bothered by the time I got in from work, and was not vibing anything in the heat.
Forced myself out the door and in the end did some good work on the bike. Aerobars making things quite speedy!

Run intervals 1:04:21 [3] 13.48 km (4:46 / km) +150m 4:31 / km
shoes: X-Talon 230

... some intervals, lovely. Legs quite surprised by this turn of events, but got the picture soon enough

4x8 minutes [3 minutes]

Monday Jul 12, 2021 #

1 PM

Swimming 43:22 [1] 1.9 km (22:49 / km)

Finally reached the race distance milestone, and it feels very achievable now.
Did 1600m then 3x100m, but could definitely have just done it all in one go - wasn't pushing the pace at all.

Plan is to get that ticked off on Friday, then might start messing around with intervals and drills etc.
If I can manage to shave off 3 minutes and go sub 40, will be happy enough with that

Sunday Jul 11, 2021 #

7 AM

Cycling 3:05:31 [2] 86.39 km (27.9 kph) +800m
shoes: Eastway R3

Early doors with RickyP, dodging the forecast wet weather.

Richard turned off after the Temple loop, and I carried on for the Borthwick/Crichton/Edgehead climbs, lovely jubbly.

Mainly dry except for a few mega puddles, and one rather muddy section by a farmyard. Hoping it was mud anyway...

Swimming 21:22 [1] 1.0 km (21:22 / km)

Gladhouse with Emily and also Ricky P but he went off on a much longer swim, so just the two of us together

Just an easy lap of the island, felt very comfortable in the water and a lot less knackering than last time we went for an open water swim.

Sighting and swimming in a straight line need a lot of work, but feeling positive after that!
8 PM

Cycling 30:05 [2]

30 minute roll once home.

Didn't really fancy it, but Emily was a hero and made dinner so there was no excuse not to

Mortonhall and Braids plod. Struggling to get into Z2, legs not playing ball - looking forwards to an easier week next week

Many chasing dogs, many disgruntled walkers. You can't win them all I suppose.

5 PM

Swimming 37:56 [1] 1.6 km (23:42 / km)

Continued tired feels, but the swimming continues to vaguely progress nonetheless

Thursday Jul 1, 2021 #

Cycling 1:56:34 [2] 57.78 km (29.7 kph) +500m
shoes: Eastway R3

Probably bike is running a fair bit better than before, but still some occasional shifting issues (the problem the failed maintenance was attempting to correct)
Anyway, moving reasonably in the end, even if it didn't feel like it at the time.

More Gladhouse, with the Temple loop in the middle too

Came close to the downhill KOM from Lang Loan -> Meadows, but cruelly prevented by various red lights conspiring against me
