Note
(rest day)

M & D visiting
Another cold and very wet day.
Visited Wakehurst Place.
Children generally pretty good, though spent a lot of the time carrying E.
NB Weighed both of them this weekend: B 2st 3lb; E 2st 0lb! B needs to eat more!
Quite a tiring day.

8 AM

Cycling 8:00 [3] 1.6 mi (5:00 / mi)
shoes: Lidl Cycling Shoes 2011

Home -> Work
Bright, sunny, frosty morning. -1C (felt like -4C).
Started off with rather a long wait at the crossing (two trains) trying not to get too cold.
1 PM

Running (Thursday Run) 38:54 [3] 8.5 km (4:35 / km)
shoes: Saucony Trigon 5

Distance estimated.
Wasn't sure if long sleeves (plus a short sleeved top over the top) and legs would be overdressed until I got out today, but turned out to just about right. If anything a pair of gloves may've been useful to attain ideal comfort!
Temp about +4C, but felt closer to freezing. Dry bright and sunny. Standard type route via Ifield Station and back up the High Street.
Didn't quite feel that the running was coming completely naturally and fluid, but not so uncomfortable to want to stop. Felt the need to make sure I had a run nearer to 40 than 30 minutes because unlikely to be out doing O this weekend 9i.e. next exercise Monday morning swim.

7 AM

Cycling 6:00 [3] 1.4 mi (4:17 / mi)
shoes: Lidl Cycling Shoes 2011

Home -> Pool
Very nice clear bright morning - no lights needed (even at 07:00).
Not too much ice about and easy to see (to avoid) in the daylight.

Swimming 39:50 [4] 2.0 km (19:55 / km)

Good session. Generally uncongested, though some strange ideas of lane discipline early on in the session led to a bit of waiting and hanging back. In spite of early delays managed to keep a good pace throughout and broke the evens target. Felt quite good afterwards.
8 AM

Cycling 13:00 [3] 3.0 mi (4:20 / mi)
shoes: Lidl Cycling Shoes 2011

Pool -> Work
Traffic back to normal after last couple of snowy days.
Cycle paths generally clear of ice so made good progress.
Still sunny (though felt cold in the wind). Pleased to be wearing thick coat, balaclava et-al.
6 PM

Cycling 8:00 [3] 1.6 mi (5:00 / mi)
shoes: Lidl Cycling Shoes 2011

Work -> Home
Followed by an evening of bathing and putting to bed awkward children!

8 AM

Cycling 10:00 [3] 1.6 mi (6:15 / mi)
shoes: Lidl Cycling Shoes 2011

Home -> Work
Snowy/icy morning and feels cold (-2C with a windchill of -10C!) . Layer of slush on the main roads with side strips of compressed snow. SR icy along the full stretch.
Took it gently. Traffic fairly light and nobody rushing. Not so difficult once on the bigger roads because I could take whatever line that I wanted round the roundabouts etc.
5 PM

Cycling 14:00 [3] 2.8 mi (5:00 / mi)
shoes: Lidl Cycling Shoes 2011

Work -> Badminton
Sun had done a good job of clearing most of the snow and ice. Traffic also fairly light (due to many people not venturing out to work in the first place). A bit wary off the main road, however, as there were some stretchs of ice on the side roads and cycle paths.
6 PM

Badminton 47:00 [3]
shoes: Nike

Bit of a late start because I arrived late and then had to wait nearly 10mins until one of the games finished. School closed, but sports facility open.
Some good games - enjoyed it.
7 PM

Cycling 10:00 [3] 2.2 mi (4:33 / mi)
shoes: Lidl Cycling Shoes 2011

Badminton -> Home
A bit blase with the ice across the cycle path just before the railway underpass and took a tumble trying to make a minor adjustment to the straight line. slow speed (<10mph) and panniers took weight of bike. Also very slippery (!) and kept sliding once I hit the deck so not too painful. Didn't notice any damage to the bike.

7 AM

Cycling 8:00 [3] 1.4 mi (5:43 / mi)
shoes: Lidl Cycling Shoes 2011

Home -> Pool
Return of winter (snowing and -1C) and back on with the thick coat and balaclava. Not too bade on roads, but needed to be careful.

Swimming 41:30 [4] 2.0 km (20:45 / km)

Pool back to 50m and reasonably quiet (4 in lane including me). Weather and previous problems (short pool) probably contributary to lack of people.
New (streamlined?!) haircut didn't compensate for the general fatigue from the weekend so a bit slow. Pool felt very long after the last 4 sessions with the short course version.
8 AM

Cycling 17:00 [3] *** 3.0 mi (5:40 / mi)
shoes: Lidl Cycling Shoes 2011

Pool -> Work
Snow heavier than before and more settled. Used cycle path as far as SG playing fields.
Slow due to the bitter northerly wind and snow encrusted gears hindering rapid progress. Also had to take it very carefully on most of the roads (which didn't appear to have been gritted). Lots of wheel spinning cars made me wary to get too mixed up with the traffic. Quite an exercise in balance, bike control and anticipation. Very glad of winter cycling clothing!
5 PM

Cycling 10:00 [3] 1.6 mi (6:15 / mi)
shoes: Lidl Cycling Shoes 2011

Work -> Home (via Asda)

Bitter Northerly wind on my back made it less uncomfortable, but still pretty hairy conditions after a full day of falling snow. Had to go slowly due to ice.
Asda fairly quiet and car park only about a third full. Felt a bit unsure on the icy back road witrh panniers full of shopping. Probably should've been more aggressive in my approach to riding this bit.
