Orienteering race (Blue) 1:49:24 [3] 12.66 km (8:38 / km) +210m 7:59 / km
shoes: Inov8 X-Talon 212 2013

10.9k course with 21 controls. I was really frustrated for most of it. It was kind of like the first race at interscholastics where it was like I wasn't really orienteering, but just running around like a maniac with a piece of paper in my hand. I just couldn't get in touch with the map at all, and I wasn't really reading it as much as I should have. And then something was up with my compass, because it was reacting slower than usual so none of my bearings worked out the way I wanted to. I got really screwed up on 19, which was in an area where I couldn't make any sense of the map. It should have been a 1 or 2 minute control by I wandered around for a good 15 minutes before stumbling upon it. On the map there was a cluster of 3 or 4 boulders near a bigger boulder on the side of a spur, but what I saw was just an endless field of boulders of the same size, which made it really confusing. From above the boulder with the control didn't look that much bigger than any others, so I didn't even glance at it twice.

I dunno if it was a good idea to run blue today, because at prom tonight I was partying pretty hard and did something to my knee. I couldn't walk too much after that and two small bumps formed on the side of my kneecap. Track meet Monday. Whoo. -__-

oh and I found 3 ticks.

Track race (4x800m) 2:05 [5] 0.8 km (2:36 / km)
shoes: New Balance Minimus

New Richmond Relays meet. The track was really weird, the straightaways were 75m and the curves were really long. None of us pr'ed in our 4x800, the weird oblong track mixed with the 20 mph crosswind made things a little bit difficult. It was really windy and freezing cold, and our race wasn't the first event because it was a relays meet, so we had to wait literally forever. The first event was a 4x1600, which in itself took like 90 minutes. We were half sleeping under 3 or so blankets, so we were nice and toasty despite the wind, which was nice.

Running 21:10 [3] 4.42 km (4:47 / km) +56m 4:30 / km

Ran through the indian mound park again. Wasn't worth it in my opinion. Everybody was so scared of rolling an ankle that we practically walked the whole time we weren't on a road.

Track intervals (Intervals) 1:01:22 [5] 6.47 km (9:29 / km)
shoes: New Balance Minimus

The girls ran these backwards, the guys all refused to conform with them, and I was stuck somewhere in between. I balanced it out, doing half of everything in the regular direction with the rest of the guys, and then turned around and did the rest backwards on my own. Definitely felt different, I had to focus more on what my feet were doing while compensating for the curve. We definitely need to do this more often, I could feel the difference in muscle ability doing the turns in the other direction.

We did the 200s starting at the center of the curves, and I did 2 in each direction. The two that I did backwards are probably my fastest ones ever, I felt like I was literally flying on the track. Definitely feels good to finally run at high speeds like that again, I'm excited to see what time I get at the meet this Friday. The 100s were run on the grass. I only ran 4 or so because the rest of the team cut the 400s and 200s short to only 3 each, so I felt justified to skip 400m of 100s. That and I didnt feel too hot in my stomach. My buddy literally destroyed the porter john out there, and while I was waiting for him I was hanging out with the high jumpers. Turns out I cannot jump, didn't even make it over 4'6"

Running (CT) 36:29 [3] 8.14 km (4:29 / km) +14m 4:27 / km

Haven't done this run in a while. Felt pretty good for the most part. Tried to stay off the roads as much as I could. We weren't really pushing the pace because we were hurting from yesterday's workout.

Track intervals (Fartleks) 43:33 [5] 4.65 km (9:22 / km)

Not our usual lineup of intervals. These fartleks focus more on building speed and speed changes. One significant difference is a two-fifty-100, where we run 200m fast, 50m slow, 100m fast, and then a 250m cooldown to start the next one at the opposite side of the track. The key is to run the 200 not quite at warp speed so that we still have some left in us to finish the 100. The 100s were on the football field barefoot. I was focusing on my plants, making sure I didn't over pronate.

Running (Mapping) 1:41:02 [1] 4.06 km (24:52 / km) +49m 23:27 / km
shoes: Inov8 X-Talon 212 2013

Headed out to the state park to take a look at the new portion of the map with Jerry and Eero. We debated a couple things regarding vegetation assignments, erosion ditches and gullies, and the accuracy of the contours. I will be designing the courses for the MNOC meet here in June, so it's good for me to get out and explore this new chunk of map in the park.

Running (scary night running) 27:04 [3] 6.07 km (4:28 / km) +28m 4:22 / km

Erin told us a while back it's a good idea to start running at night to get ready for Jukola. I tried that today, and I must say it was one of the most terrifying experiences I've had in a while. It was all good at the beginning when it was still twilight and you could still kinda see. But then once the darkness really set in halfway through my run, I must've started going a little loopy. I was on the trails behind the town hall, and then crossed over onto the golf course. It kept thinking there was something following me, probably because my brain was playing tricks on me. I started freaking out a little bit, headed back to the road, and began my way back home, still hearing that noise every once in a while. Then my mind began to wander a little bit, and I thought about slenderman, which definitely didn't help. Got home as quick as I could and tried to regain my sanity. Scary stuff right there.
