Orienteering (City Race) 1:29:31 [4] **** 11.2 km (8:00 / km)

32nd Venice Street Race - running Men's Elite. Click the little globe above to see my route. The course was rated at 11.2km, but actual distance run was well above this (17.8km according to my GPS). No significant mistakes (the course didn't feel as technical as my MA course in 2007, except for the long legs, of which there were four) and the crowds were OK until near the end, as I had had an early start.

Cool, clear and dry weather - very pleasant for running in. Finished 51st out of around 150 - a few seconds in front of Dan and Brooner. It is amazing that, after a 90 minute race, running almost the distance of a half-marathon, we end up finishing so close together.

SLOW Aldgate & Bank Street-O. Very familiar with the area, so for several legs I was able to just put away the map and know where to run to get to the feature.

I was enjoying the race so much (despite it raining a bit and several close calls/collisions with pedestrians and bikes) that the first time I looked at my watch, 41 minutes had elapsed. Unfortunately I was up at the far end of Commercial Road at the time, and so had to run fast to take advantage of the number of high-scoring controls that were near the finish - in the end, I had to miss out a 30-pointer very near the finish, and still finished two minutes late so losing 40 points. I also lost a further 40 points for writing down the wrong answers - some of the clues were very tricky. One of my favourite clues related to the London Stone, which is just awesome. Never say these Street-Os aren't a history tour!

Did pretty well I think, despite running at the beginning of the time window and so having trouble negotiating rush hour commuters, particularly around Cannon Street and (later) the Aldgate Gyratory. However a good 180-odd points behind Matthias, who won, so still some improvement possible. I also only ran 10.5km. This is a fairly typical distance for Street-Os for me, but I felt I had been running particularly fast for this one, and was surprised not to be somewhere near 11.5km/12km.
