Cycling (To Station) 11:36 [3] 4.17 km (2:47 / km)

Work to Victoria Station.

Cycling (From Station) 34:19 [3] 12.05 km (2:51 / km)

From Victoria Station to home, via The Mall, Kingsway, Angel and Hackney (stopping at the supermarket to get a bite to eat!) Nearly came a cropper on Kingsway, a car coming the other way swung across to turn right, and didn't slow down. I had to do an instinctive swerve and just made it. Too tired perhaps to get an adrenaline hit from that near-death experience, but certainly the scariest close encounter for a while.

Orienteering race (Sprint Race) 18:51 [5] **** 2.9 km (6:30 / km)

SO sprint race in The Lanes in Brighton, as part of the Brighton City Centre score event. I did this special section right at the beginning of my race, being one of the first people to enter the section, I got overtaken a few times and made two bad mistakes at controls 16 and 17, in the Royal Pavilion grounds. Vocal encouragement by some local girls loitering in the park didn't help. Finished this section 3rd out of 42 - possibly going a little too fast considering I had a regular street-O to do immediately afterwards.

Remainder of the Brighton race was a score event, my route included a couple of killer hills and some spectacular controls, including the bandstand on the sea-front. I got all the controls but one, and hand nearly six minutes to spare at the end, so should have been able to get them all (four people out of around 40 running did so) I wouldn't have won though - the winner did sub-50 minutes, including the special section. My time overall was 54:53, ending up 5th of 42 - the top three got all the controls.

Good fun on a very chilly but dry (and not frosty) night.

A short section of the canal was closed, necessitating a diversion. Otherwise, this could have been a sub-21er.

Cold but dry. Arrived a bit late so had to rush a bit to get to the start. Didn't race off at the beginning but pushed steadily up the hill and tried to go as fast as possible on the steep downhill. Had a good last km as thought I was getting chased. The sun came out from behind the clouds for the second lap - very nice. Had a cappuccino in the cafe afterwards. Splits: 3:53 (down/up), 4:07 (down/up), 3:48 (down), 4:03 (up/down), 3:46 (up).

Note

Have entered the Edinburgh Marathon on 23 May next year (as has Ed.) My first one. Five months to train.
