The tentative date for the 2012 Raid the Hammer is November 11.
This race will kick off the 2012-2013 Salomon Dontgetlost.ca Adventure Running Series - the war of 1812-1813 Bicentennial edition. Come celebrate 200 years of peace between Canada and the United States and navigate along some routes made famous by this war and so important for Canadian history.
The 2012 Raid the Hammer will follow in the footsteps of Billy Green. Billy Green escaped from the American camp in Stoney Creek and ran from Stoney Creek to Burlington Heights to warn the British of an American Attack. The next day British troops then left Burlington Heights (near present day Dundurn Castle) at nightfall and followed along the edge of the Niagara Escarpment back to Stoney Creek to surprise American troops in what is considered the most important battle of the War of 1812.
Teams of three will race through Hamilton city streets (possibly starting before dawn), along the Niagara Escarpment and through the challenging terrain of the Redhill Valley.
Details of our Snowshoe Raid event (#2 in the series) are pending.
The 2012-2013 series will conclude with our third race - Giant's Raid Raid and the Battle of Beaver Dams made famous by Laura Secord's Run. Laura Secord ran 32km from Queenston Heights to Decew House near Stoney Creek to warn British of an American Attack. The British then ambushed the Americans at the famous Battle of Beaver Dams shortly after Secord's famous run. See other discussion here:
