Note
(rest day)

Lots of travelling: bus, plane, train, car.

Friday Oct 30, 2015 #

10 AM

Cycling 2:50:00 [2] 71.0 km (2:24 / km)

Ditched the family for a solo bike ride. North from Port de Pollenca into the mountains as far the turn off to Sa Calobra. Nice flatish 13km warm up then the climb started. 500m in 8km but again quite easy gradient compared with Holme Moss. Great fun on the way back knocking out 1:20 km's for nearly 8km.

Walking 2:00:00 [1] 10.0 mi (12:00 / mi)
shoes: Innov8 X-Talon 212 (2)

Decided to log this as we weren't hanging around much.
Family walk up Bec de Ferrutx from Cases de Betlem. Very impressive looking peak from the coast but not too technical approaching from behind. Got into an unofficial 'race' with a German family on the ascent (we won;-)
Actual walking time about 4 hours. Distance 16.6km with 790m climb according to the guide book.
My calf was ok but could tell it's still not quite right so not sure how running on Sunday will go...

Wednesday Oct 28, 2015 #

Note

Hired a car for a couple of days. Drove through the Serra deTramuntana to Soller. Detoured to Sa Calobra on way back and pottered about in the Torrent de Pareis gorge. Very impressive: the full walk/scramble now on the to do list. Also on the list is the climb out of Sa Calobra; apparently one of Wiggo's favourites for which he holds the record.

Tuesday Oct 27, 2015 #

10 AM

Cycling 2:30:00 [1] 30.0 mi (5:00 / mi)

Another family day out on the bikes. Cap de Formentor inc all obvious detours and a swim/lunch stop. Most fantastic cycle route: beautiful zig zag roads through rocky mountains and pine forest. Climbs all less gradient than Holme Moss.

Monday Oct 26, 2015 #

Note

Easy day with gentle walk to Cala Boquer and back.

Sunday Oct 25, 2015 #

12 PM

Cycling 3:00:00 [1] 33.0 mi (5:27 / mi)

Exploring the local roads from our base in Mallorca with Janet and Lulu. Had intended to head for Cap de Formentor but road closed for hand bike sportif. Will have wait for another day.
Lots going on here: saw a trial bike event crossing the road and even a group of roller skiers. Not to mention hundreds of cyclists.

Friday Oct 23, 2015 #

11 AM

Note

Golf. First winter box league match. Lost the first hole, then won the next 7. Went on to win 6 and 4. Enjoyable.
5 PM

Trail running 27:00 [3] 3.0 mi (9:00 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 1080

Easy jog around Digley to test calf. Aware of slight tightness for most of the time, but fine as long as kept to a very easy pace. Then a sudden soreness in the last 100m.

Thursday Oct 22, 2015 #

9 AM

Note

Golf. 4 ball better ball with Andy against Paul and Roy. We lost 3 and 2.
Good front nine but my game fell apart on the back nine. First windy day for a while. Approx 27 Stableford points (20/7).
3 PM

Mountain Bike 58:00 [2] 11.5 mi (5:03 / mi)

Same ride as Tuesday. Wind making it feel hard work in places.

Tuesday Oct 20, 2015 #

Note
(injured)

Golf. Pro's mid week comp. 35 Stableford points (21/14). 4 points off the last 5 holes :-(
Left calf still sore walking despite lots of rollering. Might just leave it alone until after next week's holiday.
3 PM

Mountain Bike 57:00 [2] 11.5 mi (4:57 / mi)

Standard Digley-Yateholme-Hades-Cartworth Moor route.
7 PM

Note

1 hour walk while Lulu at Harriers. Calf beginning to loosen off I think.

Sunday Oct 18, 2015 #

1 PM

Orienteering race 43:58 [4] 5.0 mi (8:48 / mi)
shoes: Innov8 X-Talon 212 (2)

CompassSport Cup Final, Helsington Barrows.
Blue Men Cup course. 6.8km 250m.
4th place 5 mins down on Clive.
Calf sore but bearable to start. Suddenly stiffened up again at #10 and was hobbling from there on. One or two minor misses but nothing major. Lost 3rd place (and 33 seconds to Lulu!) on the run in. Frustrating. Routegadget:

Orienteering race 56:57 [3] 5.0 mi (11:23 / mi)
shoes: VJ Supra

PFO event, Tockholes.
Blue course, 6.4km, 200m.
Another Lancashire area I've not run on for over 30 years. Well worth the trip; lovely little bit of wood with just enough detail to make it interesting. The Blue was a bit longer than I would have liked: an unnecessary run around the reservoir at the end. My left calf tightened up about 2/3rd around the course. I eased up and was able to carry on at a reduced pace.
Worried how my calf will be tomorrow, I went for a walk up Darwen Hill afterwards to look at the Jubilee Tower and hopefully loosen the calf. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jubilee_Tower
Routegadget:
http://www.pfo.routegadget.co.uk/rg2/#80&course=7&...
Now I see why I kept on seeing people going the other way: the Brown course was largely the same as Blue but the opposite way round. Interesting planning.
10 PM

Note
(injured)

Left calf still very sore despite lots of foam rollering. Not sure I'm going to manage more than a hobble tomorrow.
Can't understand why it went today? Massage on Thursday. Didn't run particularly fast. So why did it go?

Friday Oct 16, 2015 #

Note
(rest day)

Golf with Andy. 35 Stableford points (17/18). Happy with that off my new handicap.

Tuesday Oct 13, 2015 #

8 AM

Note

Golf. Pro's mid week comp (with special £75 1st prize).
44 Stableford points (26/18). Shame I finished with an 8, but happy enough with 87 gross. Should be in with a shout. Handicap will definitely be coming down though.
Calves both suffering with a little DOMS.
Edit: I won! Handicap down to 21. Now, what can I spend that £75 on?
5 PM

Road running 42:00 [3] 5.0 mi (8:24 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 1080

Loop of Yateholme. Everything OK, just a little calf soreness still from the weekend.
8 PM

Calf strengthening 10:00 [0]

A little hampered by my sore calves.

Orienteering race 19:51 [4] 2.5 mi (7:56 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 1080

Chester Sprint weekend, Chester City Centre.
Men Vet, 2.6km straight line.
Legs feeling good and no calf or Achilles problems whilst running. Tried to cruise at high intensity rather than race flat out; not sure how much quicker I could have gone though. Calves tightened up after finishing but not too badly.
Fairly clean race, just a bit of faffing at the sneakily placed #9.
Results (5th 1 min down):

2 PM

Orienteering race 14:03 [4] 2.0 mi (7:01 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 1080

Dale Camp, Chester.
Men Vet, 2.3km.
A bit more confident to run hard this afternoon but still off the pace. Only mistake was going in one building too early at #17.
Calves tightened up even more after finishing this time. Tried to ease them with some jogging and stretching.
Results (7th, 1 min down on Simon):
http://www.deeside-orienteering-club.org.uk/result...

Fingers crossed that my calves and Achilles will be OK tomorrow/Tuesday.
These were my first Sprint races for a while and I'm not sure whether I'm bothered enough to give Sprint races a proper go next year. Part of the problem is that the big Sprints all tend to be at the beginning of a big weekend's racing. It's probably just not worth the risk, especially given I don't seem to have the speed to be competitive.

Saturday Oct 10, 2015 #

Note
(sick)

Self-inflicted sickie. Hopefully back up and running tomorrow.

Wednesday Oct 7, 2015 #

8 PM

Note

80 minute (5 miles) brisk walk around the Colne Valley while Lulu played netball. Right Achilles has been ever so slightly grumbly all day.

Orienteering race 22:15 [4] 2.5 mi (8:54 / mi)
shoes: VJ Supra

VHI relay. 2nd leg on WMW relay.
3.2 km.
England victorious:-)
No idea why the courses were so short?

Saturday Oct 3, 2015 #

11 AM

Orienteering race 59:33 [4] 5.5 mi (10:50 / mi)
shoes: VJ Supra

VHI Individual, Llynnoedd Teifi.
M50, 7.7km, 210m.
Went off hard and caught my 3 min man (Colm O'H) by #3. Continued hitting controls cleanly and running at what felt high effort. Surprised to be 5 min down on Big Jon. 3rd place and 6 points for England though so good enough to help England to an overnight lead. Men tied with the Scots but women clearly ahead.
