9 AM

Cycling 2:05:00 [2] 26.0 mi (4:48 / mi)
(injured)

From Kendal to Brigsteer, across the Lythe Valley, round the north end of Whitbarrow Scar to Cartmel Fell and down the Winster Valley. Through Witherslack and back to Kendal via Levens and Sedgwick. Front derailleur seized up so whole ride was done with chain on the middle gear. Foot mostly OK, just the occasional niggle.

Tuesday Feb 28, 2012 #

9 AM

Terrain running 52:00 [3] 5.5 mi (9:27 / mi)
(injured)

Saddleworth Moor again. Visiblity worse than last week, so did 2 laps of the western (more runnable) bit to avoid getting lost. Foot slightly niggly.

Monday Feb 27, 2012 #

Note
(injured) (rest day)

Everything OK this morning. Might break through the hour barrier this week!
Tempted to unclick the injured box, but it might tempt fate.

Sunday Feb 26, 2012 #

12 PM

Orienteering race 40:10 [4] 4.0 mi (10:03 / mi)
(injured)

DVO event, Haddon Lindop. Decided to do Blue due to continuing cold and to limit time on my feet. 5.4km, 220m. First time on this area and I've not missed much. Could be a half decent area if the map was any good, but it was rubbish, particularly the contours. Discovered this early on at no 2, but also lost time at 11 and 13. Still managed to beat Mikey by 5 minutes though;)

Saturday Feb 25, 2012 #

Note

Both Mikey and Lulu got their Interland selection letters this morning. Nothing for me though:(
Edit: My selection arrived by e mail a few days later. So Janet is the only one in the family not going!
12 PM

Terrain running 1:00:00 [3] 6.0 mi (10:00 / mi)
(injured)

From Holme Moss summit with Mikey. County boundary to Dead Edge End and back along Yateholme edge. Mikey struggling with a cold and strong head wind on the way back. Lots of jogging around in loops whilst he walked. Hope he'll wait for me in the future...
Foot fine until very near the end.

Friday Feb 24, 2012 #

Note
(injured) (sick) (rest day)

I now have a chesty cold (thanks Janet). On the positive side, my foot is fine this morning. Much improved from only a week ago.

Thursday Feb 23, 2012 #

9 AM

Trail running 46:00 [3] 5.5 mi (8:22 / mi)
(injured)

Sedgwick and back from my parent's place. Very wet and muddy under foot. Foot much better than for same run last week.

Wednesday Feb 22, 2012 #

Note
(injured) (rest day)

Had intended to cycle today, but continuous rain put paid to that idea.

Tuesday Feb 21, 2012 #

9 AM

Terrain running 50:00 [3] 5.0 mi (10:00 / mi)
(injured)

Loop of Saddleworth Moor on N side of A635. Incl visits of Alderman's Hill, the Obelisk and Broadstone trig. Low visibility and got worried enough at one stage to get my emergency compass out. Foot good.

Monday Feb 20, 2012 #

Note
(injured) (rest day)

Foot pretty good this morning. Definitely settling down quicker now, although seems to prefer running in terrain to anything else.
Visited the podiatrist (Andy Ryals) for an initial assessment. He very quickly pinpointed a problem with my cuboid bone. I have to go back next week for a full assessment which will include walking (and running?) on pressure pads.

Sunday Feb 19, 2012 #

1 PM

Orienteering race 51:53 [4] 5.0 mi (10:23 / mi)
(injured)

CompassSport Cup Heat, Gilling Woods. Blue Men, 6.4km, 210m.
I thought this was going to hurt (especially after aggravating my foot yesterday) but it wasn't too bad. The course was well planned and kept me in the terrain for most of the time and I ran on the verge whenever I was on a forest road.
Navigation was a little trickier than many had probably expected, but I ran pretty clean with just one minor miss at no.10 and a couple of dodgy route choices (nos 2 and 14). Very happy with the result; 2nd, a minute down on Chappers (who is running better than for some time) and in front of Tim (who forgot his specs) and Martin. I did have a reality check though as James Logue (running Brown) cruised past me towards the end of the course.
Best of all, SYO are through to the Final despite a very depleted team.
Foot no worse this evening than last night and will hopefully have settled down considerably by the morning.

Saturday Feb 18, 2012 #

11 AM

Trail running 35:00 [1] 2.5 mi (14:00 / mi)
(injured)

MDOC Chasing Sprint, Glossop NE. Prologue shaddowing Louise because she's too young to be trusted to cross roads. Easy jog to start with, ending up as a walk as her calves tightened up. My foot was OK with this.
12 PM

Orienteering 24:36 [3] 3.0 mi (8:12 / mi)
(injured)

The chase. 3.5km. Louise decided not to try and run again so I did it for her. Tried to run at a steady pace so as not to aggravate foot too much, but it got quite sore by the end nevertheless. Not too bad immediately afterwards though.
Foot quite sore later in the evening.

Friday Feb 17, 2012 #

Note
(injured) (rest day)

Foot good this morning. Doing a few two-footed heel-raises. No training though.

Thursday Feb 16, 2012 #

11 AM

Orienteering 40:00 [2] 2.5 mi (16:00 / mi)
(injured)

Control hanging for the kids. 20 year old Bilbo map; contours good, vegetation changed somewhat to say the least! Won't bother training there again for at least another 20 years.
Foot had settled down quite well this morning and it didn't seem to mind the slow pace and the very rough terrain too much at all.

Wednesday Feb 15, 2012 #

Note
(injured) (rest day)

Foot worse again this morning. No chance of doing anything; sore just walking around Kendal.

Tuesday Feb 14, 2012 #

11 AM

Trail running 45:00 [3] 5.5 mi (8:11 / mi)
(injured)

Down the river bank from my parent's house to Sedgwick and back along the old canal, with Mikey. Had intended to do just 30 mins but foot wasn't feeling too bad and I was enjoying the rare chance to run with Mikey so did more than planned. Foot OK for 30 mins but getting quite sore by the end. Pretty bad for the rest of the day too.

Monday Feb 13, 2012 #

Note
(injured) (rest day)

Foot not nearly as bad as I feared it might be this morning. Possibly even better than yesterday morning before I ran. Recovery day nevertheless.

Sunday Feb 12, 2012 #

11 AM

Orienteering race 36:29 [4] 3.5 mi (10:25 / mi)
(injured)

YHOA Middle Distance Champs, Norland Moor. Brown course, 4.2km, 135m. Just decided to go for it and sod the consequences, despite my foot feeling a little sore even before I ran. In the event the foot didn't feel too bad, particularly when I stuck to the terrain. Even immediately afterwards it doesn't feel worse than before I ran. Real test will be how it feels in the morning.
Started 5 mins behind Mikey and caught him when he missed nos 7 and 8. He got me back and beat me in to the finish, but not by sufficient to stop me winning. I need to make the most of it whilst I can still beat him!

Saturday Feb 11, 2012 #

Note
(injured)

In desperation I've decided that I'm going to see the podiatrist who made my orthotics to see if there's anything he can do to help my foot.
9 AM

Cycling 1:10:00 [2] 14.0 mi (5:00 / mi)
(injured)

Up to Hades, along the edge to Snowgate Head and back through New Mill and Holmfirth. Foot a bit painful otherwise would have gone further.

Friday Feb 10, 2012 #

Note
(injured) (rest day)

Foot still not right. Slowly settling down, but may have to re-start build up.

Thursday Feb 9, 2012 #

Note
(injured) (rest day)

Foot worse than it has been recently this morning so having an extra day's rest.

Wednesday Feb 8, 2012 #

9 AM

Cycling 2:10:00 [2] 25.0 mi (5:12 / mi)
(injured)

Into Huddersfield and out along the north edge of the Colne Valley. Back through Marsden and Meltham. Very cold, especially my feet. I don't think my foot was too bad, but difficult to tell as it was so cold.
Foot sore later in the day. Fear I may have overdone it, but see what it feels like in the morning.

Tuesday Feb 7, 2012 #

9 AM

Terrain running 46:00 [3] 5.0 mi (9:12 / mi)
(injured)

Lap of Wharncliffe Chase. Foot a bit worse than of late. Ground conditions variable; soft grass or bracken, then frozen ground and patches of snow.
Parked in a lay-by where someone had dumped a load of cannabis plants; was wondering what the smell was at first...
11 AM

Note
(injured)

Visit to see Kim. She tried to reassure me that my foot is getting better. General massage to loosen everything off. I can start doing some heel-raise exercises (on both feet to start with).

Monday Feb 6, 2012 #

Note
(injured) (rest day)

Foot v slightly niggly this morning. Planning a rest day anyway.

Sunday Feb 5, 2012 #

11 AM

Terrain running 50:00 [3] 4.0 mi (12:30 / mi)
(injured)

It snowed and so Big Moor got cancelled. I drove up to Holme Moss and went for a tour of Black Hill. A lot more snow than on Friday and now severely drifted making going much tougher. Foot was a little sore occasionally when fighting my way out of deep drifts. If conditions on Big Moor were anything like, the courses would have needed severely shortening; e.g Green would probably have done for Short Brown.

Saturday Feb 4, 2012 #

Note
(injured) (rest day)

Foot fine this morning. Resting in the hope to run at Big Moor tomorrow (snow permitting).

Friday Feb 3, 2012 #

11 AM

Terrain running 45:00 [3] 4.0 mi (11:15 / mi)
(injured)

East along the county boundary from Holme Moss summit and back with Simon M. About 150mm of powdery snow made it nicely soft underfoot and my foot didn't object at all. Beautiful views in the brilliant sunshine.

Thursday Feb 2, 2012 #

Note
(injured) (rest day)

Foot not feeling quite as good this morning as it has been so decided to have a precautionary rest day.

Wednesday Feb 1, 2012 #

Cycling 2:00:00 [2] 27.0 mi (4:27 / mi)
(injured)

Same ride as last week. Foot not quite as pain free as Saturday, but better than this time last week. Just slightly niggly afterwards.
