In Tucson for Southwest Spring Week, and today was exactly what I was expecting. Beautiful warm weather and a rocky, prickly course. I ran the start for the first 2 hours which was fun since I was able to see a lot of old friends. Then I headed out on my course -- I had signed up for Brown, but switched to Green because...why not?
I started out fine, remembering how to avoid the cacti, but then I realized that *every* plant there is prickly, even the innocent-looking bushes. So every time I left the trail, I was on high alert. It was a pretty straightforward course except for #6, where I hesitated the entire way, trying to decide the best route as I was executing it, and ended up taking the absolute worst route. Oh, well.
By the time I was 2/3 of the way through, I was wishing I had stuck with Brown. I miscounted the washes on my way to #9, stopped one short, went back to the previous one, and then realized my mistake. Took another horrible route choice to #10, and then just hobbled into the finish. My feet and ankles showed their lack of training because everything was sore and chewed up. I guess they're toughening up for the rest of the week.
