Orienteering race (Dorset Delight) 51:59 [3] 7.07 km (7:21 / km) +165m 6:35 / km
slept:5.0 weight:72.1kg (injured) shoes: inov8 Roclite295 (2)

At Shillingstone Forest. 5.2km 170m climb short blue course.

Taking the path routes where I could to avoid worst of brambles and so that could see where foot was going. Luckily the course was so uninspiring that almost every control was on a path or visible from it.

Took south route to 1 but found an unmapped platform, then a control that wasn't mine. Happened to see Caroline Potter somewhere NW of me so looked to see if it was there. I found it but she hadn't! Had a short race with Pat Grenfall on tracks just after 1. Found 3 very easily but spent 2 mins finding a route through the brambles and fallen stuff to punch it.

Very very safe route into 5 to avoid having to climb over stuff, followed by very slow descent down extraction track to the big forestry track. Was then uphill from here - 170m all in one go! Tried running but lack of fitness combined with various obstructions meant it wasn't very quick. Really struggled climbing over stuff getting out of 7. Muddy path along field to 8 was quite hard and ended up walking a lot of this too. 9 was dead running/walking and happened to chance on 10 more through luck than skill. 11 ok but too low into 12 and had to work back from the finish.

Ankle held out ok but think I would have struggled to do a much longer course today. Only just beating 10 min/k and despite it being a fast course was still leading when we left.

Orienteering (NGOC Nine Wells) 1:01:07 [3] 7.6 km (8:03 / km) +115m 7:29 / km
slept:5.0 weight:72.3kg (injured) shoes: inov8 Roclite295 (2)

NGOC Informal at Nine Wells - 6.1km 100m climb blue course - never new the Forest of Dean could be so flat!

Plan was to take this very easy and not risk the ankle - jarred it a couple of times but the injured ankle was hurting less than the uninjured one so doubt I've done it any harm.

Good job I wasn't taking this too seriously as I ended up making the sort of error that Adam Potter would make - went down the hill and along the bottom in to 4 thinking "wait a minute, aren't I supposed to go to number 3 first...?". At least that bit of the forest was about as lovely and runnable as it gets. A little bit upsetting that Paul Hammond started at the same time as me and we were still together at number 5...

Made a fairly stupid mistake leaving 7 and then followed a very rough indistinct path when there was a nice firm distinct one parallel and only a few yards away.

Last 5 controls or so very straightforward and I was with a youngish NGOC guy who I didn't recognise. Managed to use my skill to finish ahead of him. Given the amount of walking I did and the mistakes early on (I made a bit of a mess of 1 and 2 as well) quite surprised to have done about 10 min/k. Probably should have been 10-15 mins faster.

Could feel the grip on the new shoes today.

Running (BOK training run) 1:07:16 [3] 11.23 km (5:59 / km) +75m 5:48 / km
slept:6.0 weight:72.5kg (injured) shoes: Saucony Powergrid Triumph 9

BOK training run from Frenchay.

Despite feeling ok, ankle lasted only 2 minuts and went when I put my foot on some small rock just going into Oldbury Court. Had to walk a bit for the pain to subside before carrying on more gingerly.

Struggled on the cycle path as we got further along and found the camber of the path unpleasant for ankle on way out of Eastville Park and and the end of the river in Frenchay - had to walk the latter. Still managed to comfortably run up the last hill faster than Burley.

Will need to take it fairly slowly on Sunday - now doing just the Short Blue so intending for it to be slow jog/walk.
