Orienteering 18:00 [3]

A funny 'sprint' in a town (so about 20 houses in the middle of the forest) about 150km S of Vuokatti, some sort of regional champs I think. Was a non-sprint spec map of the town surrounds. Really a street o with patches of trees creating alternate routes. Course had all of 8 controls and it took me the first 4 to realise that taking the much longer road routes was much faster than taking the forest routes!
Al Crocker beat me by 4s - thanks to her making a mistake and missing the entrance to a patch of white, so she went all the way around and took 20s out of me on the route!

um. yeah. not brilliant WOC specific training I don't think. Oh well!

Orienteering warm up/down 15:00 [3]

2 PM

Orienteering 43:00 [3]

Middle distance out the back of the same town in the arvo. Junky terrain, made junkier by felling tracks and thinnings. Navigation wise I was fine, aside from a slip on 2 and a bad route on 3, and wrong mapping at 6... hmm maybe not so fine?
No overall i was still happy with the nav but the travel and 4 days in terrain has caught up with me, leaving my legs with nothing. Time for a good rest.

Orienteering 47:00 [3]

back on the other end of the long map from yday. just a 6km or so course. lost concentration on the last couple of controls.

Orienteering 45:00 [3]

5 x 3-4 control courses out on the long training area. could relate it quite well to sand dune terrain which was reassuring. Some very vague areas and some very steep areas!
5 PM

Orienteering 32:15 [4]

ran a local event. classic marshy finnish terrain. highlight was meeting the marshy vegetation which id only ever seen on catching features before...and it looked identical to inthe game!! ( i think i'm still jetlagged...if that's exciting).

tough tough terrain. so energy sapping!

Orienteering 50:00 [3]

hit up the middle training area behind the sports centre with Aislinn and Lachy. Just a map walk/jog. The rocks made sense, which was a good first sign! Found some flags and map memory maps at a couple of features too :)

Running 35:00 [3]

stuck in changi airport for 7 hours. so hit up the gym for the first time in my life. and as a consequence ran with headphones on for the first time of my life. Don't think i'd have survived more than 10mins on teh treadmill otherwise. 35 was a real mental struggle!

biking (commute) 15:00 [3]

well. not a commute. but i'm not generating a new type of training. once i was sick of the treadmill i jumped on the spin bike and looked at finnish maps.

Strength and Conditioning 15:00 [3]

to kill more time. the gym was actually pretty good. id recommend it to anyone with a few hours to kill. only thing it really lacked (from my perspective anyway) was a foam roller!

...now only 3 more hours to kill...

Orienteering 50:00 [3]

State league out at Orroral Crossing.

A long-middle type course with plenty of controls and direction changes over the rocky hillsides in the valley. Lots of undergrowth hiding the rocks which made it a lot slower and more physical.
A decent run aside from losing 1.30 on the first control, which was not good at all. I kind of did a rolling start as I didn't want to get in the way of the school's trial, but that meant I wasn't in orienteering mind frame until half way up the hill to the first control, which was too late.

Didn't feel I got any speed up really, sure Grace would have had me today if she wasn't off sun bathing somewhere instead!
2 PM

Football 1:30:00 [4]

wooo. survived my final game before world champs without any big knocks! Just a bruise on the knee, and a matching one on the hip :)

1-0 loss to tuggers. Don't know why, but the ball just won't get in the freaking back of the net for us.
Other side showed some piss poor sportsmanship today too.

Anyway. goodbye soccer for a month. Orienteering, I'm all yours! :)

Running 46:00 [3]

somewhat underestimated how far away the start was so got a nice long warmup and down, plus had to find the start, which was on the edge of my arbitrarily cut off map!

Orienteering 26:00 [4]

Middle distance length course on 1:5000 map at Majura West.
Few of the features weren't there, as expected. Yet some were, just covered in fallen trees to make them a bit harder!
Managed to quite literally step on a rabbit. Not sure who was more surprised. Poor thing. It hopped off with a sore tail...

Orienteering wise, alright. A couple of off bearings and exit directions still to be worked on.

Running 20:00 [3]

10 WU, 4 between, 6 WD

Orienteering 14:44 [4]

First bush sprint. From the back of Rem Park, small loop there, then over to Ainslie Rd. Felt nice and fresh but couldn't get the effort overly high. Mind was still on the morning's work I think. Drifted off on 13, otherwise nav was good. (looks dodgy out of 8, but the pits weren't actually where they're mapped, so think i mistweaked the gps a bit.

Orienteering 13:35 [4]

2nd bush sprint. From Ainslie Rd over to campbell parkland offices and a loop back to the rd. Bearings off a bit and got sucked into the gully going to the finish. Again effort didn't feel 100%, but maybe that's a good thing?

Football 1:10:00 [2]

Bit too much standing around/exercises not really working as they should tonight. Was hoping for a hit out at the end, but we trained with the SL1 team, so it ended up as a cramped game. I didn't get too involved as I didn't want to take any knocks, which was more likely given the crowding.
Hands were frozen white bricks of pain all evening. Took a good half hour back home to get life back in them!

Wednesday Jun 19, 2013 #

4 PM

Running 37:00 [3] 7.0 km (5:17 / km)

Cruisey run from the lab. Legs were tired, funnily enough!
Up to the saddle, over little black and a loop around the single tracks of North Black mtn.

Tuesday Jun 18, 2013 #

3 PM

Orienteering 40:00 [5]

Sprint intervals around the ANU with Jacquiiiiiii. Started off in nice sunshine, then drizzle, then rain, then torrential rain, hail, a lot of hail, and more rain. Finished off with a bit of thunder and lightning.

The actual training part was pretty good too.

http://ogang.org/doma/show_map.php?user=lizziei&ma...

Orienteering warm up/down 10:00 [3]

little bit of a warmup. lap of the pitch warmdown, then into the car and straight home for a hot shower and hot chocolate!
6 PM

Football 1:20:00 [3]

Actually really nice weather for evening football training... dry and not too cold! First time in weeks that I didn't lose feeling in my fingers at all! A fair bit of running, but not too much sprinting, which suited my tired legs just fine :)

Monday Jun 17, 2013 #

4 PM

Running 45:50 [3] 7.4 km (6:12 / km)

Very mentally tired, but managed to corner my scrap of motivation before it got dark, and let it drag me out for a run.

Physically felt fine once I got going. Standard lab run. Up to Circumcision, around, over Black mtn. Down the far side, downhill terrain to the track, follow my nose and single track it back up down and around to the lab.

Sunday Jun 16, 2013 #

Note
(rest day)

such a beautiful day! But so tired. Might get a jog in later, we'll see. Spent the morning setting exercises for this week though, will see how many I get out to do! :)

Saturday Jun 15, 2013 #

Orienteering 1:32:00 [3]

A good trip out to Badja for a day's training. Pretty cold and wet miserable weather, but was fine once you got going.
2 corridors which took about 22mins each
http://ogang.org/doma/show_map.php?user=lizziei&ma...
1:5000 sprint 14:00mins
http://ogang.org/doma/show_map.php?user=lizziei&ma...
and a middle to finish ~30mins.
http://ogang.org/doma/show_map.php?user=lizziei&ma...

Felt extremely fatigued out in the terrain, a combination of the last 3 days and the physical nature of the map I guess. Rest tomorrow.

Friday Jun 14, 2013 #

4 PM

Running 43:00 [3]

Easier run. around and over little black mtn (incedentally, my 3min hill rep takes 4mins at a steady pace). Then on up to circumcision, around and over Blackie and back down to the lab just as it got properly dark.

Thursday Jun 13, 2013 #

4 PM

Running warm up/down 22:00 [3]

over to little blackie and back to the lab after.

Running intervals 15:00 [5]

5 x ~3mins single track uphill intervals on little blackie. Delicious pain.

Running 15:00 [3]

active rests running back down the hill
7 PM

Football 1:20:00 [3]

Late training which went even later than usual thanks to the SRA turning off the floodlights on us. Had to wait 10mins in the cold and pitch black for them to figure out how to turn them back on. brilliant.

Toe is getting better by the day. As is my nose - yet to ascertain if it's straighter or more crooked than before though.

Wednesday Jun 12, 2013 #

9 AM

Running 28:00 [3]

Over O'Connor Ridge to the start at the back of Bruce Ridge. And WD along the single tracks back to the car, with a couple of nice hills added in for fun.

Orienteering 24:54 [4]

took my new inov8s out for a spin. Nice to have grip again! And the toe was sweet as for the majority of it - just have to choose the right shoes to wear for the next week or so I think to minimise the pressure on the nail.

Will get the actual time off my garmin soon, but ran a short course Scotty set on bruce ridge a while back for Hanny and Heather, lots of direction changes which was good. Still think I'm better at finding termite mounds in the dark than in the day.

Nice to go training in the morning before work - although this time it meant I had to walk through to my office looking like a drowned rat!

Tuesday Jun 11, 2013 #

6 PM

Football 1:00:00 [2]

thought id see how the toe went. Short sharp stuff wasn't exactly comfortable but for the main part running is actually less painful than walking.

Monday Jun 10, 2013 #

Note
(injured) (rest day)

A public holiday and I couldn't even get out training!

Spent the day studying WOC maps and info and resting up the toe. Incidentally, toes are hard to ice!

Football warm up/down 20:00 [2]

Football 40:00 [4]

Bit of a downer of a match really.
A great start, and we went 1-0 up, quite deservedly. Then back to 1-1. Then I got my left big toe utterly annihilated by a team-mate sprinting ontop of it. So pathetic! I thought I'd run it off, but 20mins later it was still agonising, and I was obviously distracted by it. (although, I did almost pull off what would have been a wicked header goal off a cross, but just flashed it wide. Actually, that might have been prior to the stomping).
Anyway, then I got the ball kicked into my face from point blank and had to go off for blood bin.
So got my foot iced, but also got told I was being subbed at half time. Which put me in a shitty mood for the rest of the half. And I still couldn't play properly on my foot.

So. 40mins of game, of which 20mins was at a limp. My toe will be fine in a few days, it's just a new black toenail and is swollen and painful where the nail goes into the skin. For something so small it really is stupidly painful. Once I came off the pitch the pain really kicked in (no pun intended). Very very frustrating. Wish I'd gone training prior to the match so I got a decent training for the day!

Coming off was the right decision, atleast I can admit that now :)

Oh, and my nose is swollen and bruised too. Hopefully not broken!

Football's a silly game really.

Orienteering 1:18:10 [4]

Jim Sawkins Memorial Course which Scotty had kindly put tapes out for us for.

Took the first few short controls to remember I was running on 1:15000, then took a branch right across the face on the way to 4. That aside, was really happy with my run. Switched well between different speeds and techniques and hit all the controls cleanly (with the exception of 9 - but Lachy and I agree the map is warped around there, and my gps agrees).

Pleased to get back to the finish and find that the branch in the face had only left a little scratch, rather than the full blown scratching that it felt like!

...and I'm not a pro on the handicapping system - but I think this time might have given me victory over Craney? and maybe Lachy too? Either way, a good session.

Running 15:00 [3]

Just a thought. If the amount of blood, snot and tears on your face is a sign of how much effort you've put into a training/race - I went pretty hard today :)

Thursday Jun 6, 2013 #

6 PM

Orienteering 37:15 [3] 8.75 km (4:15 / km)

was skipping football training to go to a concert, which conveniently meant I could make it to the earlier street-o :)
One of those nights where I was convinced I had a bad route, but arrived at the finish to find I'd beaten the boys! Still not overly happy with my route, but got a good run out of it.
might quit while I'm on top! (actually, only 2 more before I leave, and they'll be a bit tight to fit in before football training).

Wednesday Jun 5, 2013 #

7 PM

Orienteering 48:00 [3]

Campbell Park Red1 course from the other Saturday (schools trial). Ran it in 3 sections as mass starts with Craney and Lachy. Got left behind on the running but the boys were hesitant enough in the circle for me to catch up a bit.
Apparently I'm better at finding termies at night than I am in the light! Really happy to spike each control. Aside from 9 where the gps has me stopping early - which explains my off bearing to 10 I guess. Although I did find 2 patches of rocks, like on the map?

Long downhill bearing 10-11 was awesome. Ended up with the 3 of us converging simultaneously from different directions onto a termite mound in the middle of nowhere.

Good Stuff. Overall got smashed by Craney - despite his lack of compass and dodgy headlamp. But then, he didn't have a gps watch, so we have no proof he got the controls ;-)

11 AM

Orienteering 48:00 [3]

3rd time lucky! Finally got around the training i set on Bruce Ridge!

Map with gps soon. It was a very slow and steady pace, but the main thing is I felt much more myself today and yesterday than the previous days!

Also, got the Jim Sawkins memorial course1 off Bob, so will head out for a decent run around that this weekend :)
6 PM

Football 1:20:00 [3]

Brilliant training where we had to give positive feedback to our teammates after each exercise, or whenever the ball went out. Much hilarity ensued.

Monday Jun 3, 2013 #

biking (commute) 40:00 [1]

In/out from uni.

Feel I'm almost over this little buggy :)

Football warm up/down 20:00 [3]

Football 1:30:00 [3]

Gutted to not go orienteering this morning. If I was 100% I'd have gone, and then probably only played half a game given it was a 13km course. But, given the lingering sickness I gave it a miss. HOpefully will head out and do the course as training next week if the option is there.

3-1 loss. One day we'll perform how we're capable of. Just need the whole team to give 100%.
Felt a bit blocked up the whole game which didn't help.

Saturday Jun 1, 2013 #

10 AM

Orienteering 44:00 [3]

Was at Red Hill anyway to coach. Wasn't 100% but given I was there and not feeling horrific thought I'd have a jog around.

Good contouring practice. Lost 3min on #9 which was a bit of a shocker. Went off an unmapped termie and lost which broad spur I was on. Not much to relocate off - gave it a stab relocating off a different termie, this time it was a mapped one and I found the control!
Then lost a couple of minutes on the last control. Doing the opposite of what I try and teach the kids to do, and going off the vego boundary rather than contour features. (although to be honest it was because I made a mistake going off my first choice contour feature). Once I chose the earth wall as an AP it all fitted fine.

Average, but gave me an excuse to spend the rest of the day in bed, watching movies and playing catching features :)
