Making sure at least something gets done today, what with work and DIY.

No issues ongoing from last week. L PT and R Achilles at same manageable level they were before. Would like to sort as I plan to go a bit longer next year as well as race hard. Glutes need activating and more core in general required. Might think about maybe going to a gym...!

Woke with hannah and figured this was the best part of the day for a run

Feet and toe swelling has pretty much subsided. Legs feel alright but should hammer the hamstrings, achilles and glutes a bit to stave off the PF.

Note

"I don't think we'll finish 2nd again this year, but that's because we're more likely to finish 5th" I said to AliM last weekend. And so it turned out.
Given the wash-out of the first part of the year I wasn't sure how much endurance I'd have built up since mid-July. Jim has been working hard, looking after an 8-month old and not got the training in he wanted. He goes like a Duracell bunny but the effects of the 300km PTL in early September may have still been hanging around.

It became obvious early on I was strongest of the two, especially in the rough stuff, of which there was a bit. When we were pack running with GG/HH and The Kids I felt very comfortable but Jim dropped off early to save himself. Whilst saying I could have stayed with GG/HH to the finish is bold I reckon I could give it a good shot it felt that comfy at the time. We hacked on but Jim wasn't enjoying the terrain so was surprised we only lost 32mins on the alliterative duo, and 10 on The Kids, The Kids 2 ( Nathan and Sav) Swedes and NeilT and partner.

Day 2 we were closer matched but I was still comfy. Good pack running with Shane&Dunc and The Kids2 for bits, but with the Swedes for the vast majority of the day. Mentally I was quite happy meandering along - with the 3min gaps seeded start we were in a bit of no-mans land race-wise. I wonder what the heat of competition could have yielded. I think the lack of base this year told a bit more on day 2.

Again I enjoyed myself despite the 'orrible terrain. Funny how 5th has made me have more belief than all those 2nds. Then I could claim fluke or shenanigans or weaker fields. Here I've managed to hang with much better runners and felt comfy, and making Jim suffer always helps! The last few weeks have built up plenty of motivation for next years but I need a rest (feels funny saying that after a massive 3.5 month season!) And have a new house to DIY and decorate.

Anyway, no OMM next year. Getting married instead. Make your own jokes about attrition, endurance and cuddling a strange man in a small wet tent for 14 hours.
