Map hike 2:00:00 [1] ****
shoes: New VJ Spikes

Back at HR on a decidedly nicer day than last time. With the clearings beckoning in all their sun-dappled glory, it was a good time to be there.

Revisted all the controls for the final, checked some more corridors, and moved some streamers.

Then hung more streamers and moved some for the night-O. Those courses are now all done, and fairly decent, all things considered, for a night-O at HR. Basically, a brown at night.

The sprints (especially after discussing map corrections with Eric) are now mostly done. Or, I should same, I am 90% confident that they are done. The final may be a bit long (WT-wise). I just need to determine whether I care. If this was the US Champs or equivalent, I would do a lot more to try to achieve this. For the SS, I think I can tolerate some more imprecision. On the other hand, I think Emil or equivalent would have no problem coming in closer to 14... Also, none of the winning times for last year's sprints were Under 16, so maybe this is consistent with that. And it is fine sprint orienteering and a true test.

The first sprint will be much closer to 15 minutes I think.

Actual time there was 5:15 or so, but I can't log all of that. Some was just performing aesthetic evaluations of finish chute angles--clearly not "training"-worthy.

Orienteering 6:30 [5] *****

Trying to hammer through the finals terrain to see how fast it can be. (Fast enough, I think.)

Stopped when I found Eric.

Orienteering 19:00 [3] **** 2.85 km (6:40 / km)
shoes: New VJ Spikes

Ran at a easy-moderate pace around the final course. Some small errors and some big route choice errors. I did it on a 1:10000 which was very difficult to read.

Run 1:30:00 [3] 19.0 km (4:44 / km)

Ran with Eddie. Nice run. 30 minutes or so on the road, then 45 or so on the sand, plus 15 or so on pavement.

Time includes cooldown at end.

We cruised out on the pavement. On the sand my blisters started to hurt and my legs ran out of juice and after 15 minutes Eddie pulled away. He did wait up for me for the last 15 minutes when my legs came back to life and the blisters became tolerable.

Afterwards, in the inimitable TNT tradition, we had sumptuous cooking from special celebrity guest chef Tom. Yesterday, it was creole creations from the real cajun conjurer Eddie himself.

Nothing beats TNT action.

TNT hurricane edition.

Ran on the beach with Eddie, Greg, and Tom. Awesome. Really sublime time with sand and water sandblasting alternative sides of the face. Did develop some blisters on the very wet sand.

TNT orienteering training at Ridley. Eric set some streamers in one of the "better" parts of Ridley. Unfortunately, I neglected to inform TNTers that we would be doing technical training or going off trail, so some were in shorts. Mea culpa.

My plan was to run this hard, with the inclusion of a longish trail running leg to the "start" at the top of the red trail hill and back. I did the loop twice, first from Z-A and then A-Z. Orienteered very well, but by the end, it was very dark. Night O anyone?

TNT. I was late due to extenuating but not unforseen circumstances. I ran some with Sandy and then harder back.

Return split was 19:46.

It was very, very dark. Two large trees had fallen across the drive, requiring stopping and stepping over.

(rest day)

Unfortunately I could not get out to train today. I spent the entire evening going over night O and sprint courses.

Orienteering 1:30:00 [2] *** 9.0 mi (10:00 / mi)
shoes: New VJ Spikes

Course setting for SS and night O. Actual time in forest was 5-5:30. It was one of the least pleasant course setting experiences ever, as it rained continuously, and really hard around 5:00 when I was trying to find a formline reentrant in light green for a night O control. JJ thinks his course is hard? Actually, I never found it to my satisfaction (or another site) so I think both of those have got to go.

The other two night Os are fine, actually probably rather nice.

The sprints ought to be really good, especially the final, final courses. There will be no doubt that the winner is the strongest and smartest sprinter this side of Wingstedt. I wonder if Freddie's got what it takes?

I do need to go back up and spend a few hours clearing brush and trees. Any volunteers?

The first courses are still a bit unsettled, but the current versions would definitely work.

Kind of got messed up when teams dissolved after 6, but Randy and I decided to keep going. But then we got an extra dose of rest, kind of screwing up the workout.
