mountain bike from yarmouth to mottistone down for orienteering. pretty hilly, but dramatic on the sea cliffs by the Tennistone Memorial.

Orienteering tempo 41:37 [4] 5.58 km (7:27 / km) +129m 6:41 / km

green course - WIGHTO event at Mottistone Downs.

Old School!! control card and pin punch event! good times...

the locals were a bit surprised to see me - seems like they don't get many 'mainlanders' making the jaunt out to their events.

green course was the longest on offer, i tried to run it at a pace similar to how i intend to run the BOC classic next week. map was a little here and there, and the undergrowth was thick, and it was pretty hilly. so all in all (dodgy map aside!) fairly good prep for next saturday.

took a while to get going after the cycling. also neither of my feet feel particularly great at the moment. niggles on the footstrike and some slight achilles soreness. really have to rest up this week and get some early nights. maybe just some short intervals on tuesday.

cycling 59:40 [2] 13.37 km (4:28 / km)
shoes: Canondale Trail SL1 MTB

mtb back to yarmouth from mottistone, this time via strawberry lane. took some random routes through fields that were tough going. ice cream at yarmouth before getting the ferry, then 3 pints of wadsworth 6X at 'The Bosun's Chest' in Lymington.

Note

had a guest pass to the plush gym in meryck park.

sauna, swim, steam room, and jacuzzi. got told by the pretty 23yr old 'membership manager' that she loved my accent and that if i gave her a call she'd sort me out with a student discount membership.

ashamed to say i actually blushed.

meryck park and puggs hole time trial,

felt tired, and just couldn't get going, not a great sign.

24.07 for the loop, but to be honest i'd given in after around 6-7mins.

almost a minute slower than my record.

just had a good read through the event documentation for the british champs. looking forward to it now! looks like YHOA are putting on a superb event, and i'm excited about running on two areas that are totally new to me!

MTB thrash from home. good fun. loads of fucking flies going into my face though, need to get some glasses.

out to moors valley, and did one hard thrash around the single track. boring slog back on the tarmac back home before it got dark.

trail running 59:17 [3] 9.44 km (6:17 / km)
ahr:129 max:160 shoes: New Balance 769

steady running through meryck park, puggs hole, bourne valley and back.

did some drills and strides on the rugby pitches on the way home.

had to stop a couple of times, once when my garmin just randomly lost satellite connection (the GPS tracking for this run is completely out, and probably about 1.5km shorter than it should be) and the second time when i was running into puggs hole - i saw some smoke in the trees and as i was running up my normal path, there was the start of a forest fire. the flames were about a foot high, and i was fortunately able to stamp them out. the ground was smoldering, and fortunately a local guy who had also seen the smoke and come out to look, was able to head home and get some water to dowse the ground.

a strange one - there was noone else really around, no glass amongst the pine needles and soil - we noticed a cigarrette butt, but there's no way of knowing if that is what caused the fire. if i had been 5 minutes later i think it would have been out of control.
