Running 45:00 [2]

Warm-ups for the two races, and running the sprint with Inara and her friend Emily. Emily is 8, and was much faster than Inara, so Inara had to run full speed just to keep up. She did well, and I was very proud of her. She had one bad fall, sprawling on the sidewalk, but picked herself up and kept going. Tough kid.

BC Champs Sprint

Really fun first part of the course through a network of many winding MTB trails on a forested hill. The course setters used this really well, and we had 10 controls in this section. The second half was through a residential area and some parks and didn't have a lot of route choice options or tricky sections, perhaps because a lot of the area was marked out of bounds. Predictably, I did relatively better on the first part, and then lost time to the fast guys on the second, running-heavy, part. Still a really fun sprint!

BC Champs Middle 2

I felt better physically this time than on the first day, and had high hopes for this race. I lost a bit of time to 1, not climbing out of the start, but then ran 2-5 well before losing map contact to 6 and having to bail out by the swamp. This cost about 1:30, and Will, who started two minutes behind me, could see me leaving as he came in. We spiked 7 and began the climb to 8. I worked hard to stay with him, and that cost me the focus I needed to realize that we were screwing up. A massive mistake followed (about 4 minutes), and the race was over. I did ok the rest of the way, except for not seeing the flag at 10 (Will caught up to me again there), and then going to the correct feature at 14 before finding the flag on the wrong cliff about 50m away. This was the second misplaced control on our courses this weekend, which is unfortunate.

Still, I really enjoyed the terrain and course setting. This was well worth the trip, and I only wish I was fitter so I could handle the terrain better. Thanks to the organizers!!

Running 20:00 [2]

Short warmup, plus some running while shadowing Inara on her course.

BC Champs in Whistler, Middle 1.

We were pretty rushed getting up here in the morning, and I didn't have much time for a proper warmup. I am not sure how much that mattered, as I found it difficult to run through the terrain at any speed while still maintaining map contact. A lot of fun - reminiscent of north-central Sweden (Dalarna), but less runnable. I blew the second control, but then settled in ok, if slow. Ended up 4th on the day, way behind the speedy Kiri Gene B, but ahead of several folks I don't normally expect to beat.
