orienteering 29:09 [5] 3.1 km (9:24 / km)

US Relay Champs - Yellow Course. Not a clean run, bobbled 2, then boomed 3. I'll never have a perfect run, so #2 was acceptable, but didn't pay attention and floated off too far E, then overshot W of 3 (way past W of 8!), then came back after realizing code 116 was my #8. Rest of course OK. Pretty ticked off. Coming to the finish decided relays aren't my thing.
Now, I'm thinking - wait til the next event. OK team finished 5th - Mook had a strong anchor. Spike will be healthy for Vermont in 02...

Need magnifier before next event - taking way too long to read map.

orienteering 1:09:00 [4] 4.88 km (14:08 / km)

Vasquez Rocks (Agua Dulce, CA) - Green course
5 min warm up. Read and reread course notes and mapsetters notes; paid off. Reminded me of Garden of the Gods a few years ago. Intended to run to finish; if I had trouble, abandon and get ready for next day.
Couldn't see trail from start to road to #1. First 2 controls along road or trails, then #3 was an outcrop on a easily recognizable spur, but got lost 3 min searching - should have read the clue: foot of westernmost outcrop. 3-4: did not execute plan to take trail to just S. of control; wasn;t sure I was on trail and then tried taking trail due west; stops lots, got led to wrong conrol and then figured I was one spur short. To 5: 200m uphill - had time to read map... finally seeing the details, stopped often, but stayed in contact right to control. 6 & 7 were slow but right on. Route to 8 was around - near control then got pulled away by other runners. To 9 was just plain slow walking. Stopped way too often to 10, then fished around circle for another minute.
Map was good. Running wasn't max (4, not 5 effort). Really enjoyed the run after finally reading the map. 3rd in M50. Best time was 53 min for the day on green. Spike walked course in 60 min.

AM - very stiff and sore later in day (next day, too; legs especially in back of knees still sore).
