in three years of meditation & yoga, I can honestly say I've never achieved even a single perfectly centered & focused breath. (that's alotta unfocused breath!) so it's interesting to read about your aikido...

I don't mind the non-perfection. I gradually improve and develop. I am amazed how strongly the martial arts practice is ingrained in the body. My intense training period is 20 years back, yet when I go back to practice, the body remembers.
This is the crucial element. I allow the body to function in a balanced way. I am not forcing anything. After a while I sense the energy, I become aware of what happens right in the moment when I practice. Over time, it becomes second nature, even when I do something completely different. So maybe the centered breathing or action happens when I don't even know about it. It is like gardening: The plants grow, I facilitate by creating a good environment for them.

haha! you caught the "perfectly"! Yeah, some moments, I am almost in the moment...
