My cross country coach is right hardcore, he's been to the Olympic's. Anyways, he says it's all in the head, that your mind is fooling you.

what kind of stretching do you do before racing? In orienteering I do nothing before races, but in XC I always did some leg swings and strides and stuff. Sorry that you had a bad race..... we missed you today up in NH.

John, I don't think you need a bagel before an 8k race. Normally, if you have proper nutrition (e.g., evening pasta before the race) then your body should have enough energy for 8k run.Gel (nice to have caffeine) 15-20 min. before race is fine. Gu2O will not hurt. Most likely your cramps were caused by your Thursday's workout. Running at anaerobic threshold two days before the race is overkill. 4x800 at your race pace or 4x400 at faster pace should be enough. BTW, it appears, Nikita raced at Dartmouth few weeks ago, but he didn't notice you.
