Running (Active Recovery Walk) 44:39 [3] 3.7 km (12:04 / km)

Walked home after the rains passed. I wanted to warm up my very sore and stiff legs so that I could properly stretch them once I got home. Ran for the lights once and legs felt incredibly heavy. Had a good stretch afterwards. I hope all those hills that are making me sore have made me quicker!

Adventure Race race (Espresso 09) 11:40:00 [2] 100.0 km (7:00 / km) +966m 6:41 / km

Stage 1 Paddle 23km
I knew that double ski's don't go twice as fast as single, but they do go quicker so I expected our 3 in 1 arrangement to be a bit faster than the rest of the field. Nope. I was at the back, with Matt in the middle and Boltboi up front. My role materialised pretty quickly as one of steerer. I struggled, struggled, struggled to keep that thing straight. There were a few times that I actually managed to paddle and keep it straight but most of the time I was using my paddle as an energy sapping rudder. It also took a lot of concentration so I forgot/ didn't have time to eat...

Transition went ok and we rushed down to... wait in the line to cross. We kept our booties on put on dry shoes once we crossed.

Stage 2 Trek 11km 330m ascent
This trek went smoothly although we were surprised about the hilliness of the terrian, well, maybe it was just me. The bush (pines) didn't seem too friendly and our intention to go bush to save time vanished unless it was pretty open. Kept up a good pace I thought and I think we made up a spot once into TA2 in darkness

Transition was good again. A quick bite to eat, put on the MTB shoes (although were they really the best choice?) and off we went. A BIG THANKS to Rachel for the choc brownie, mmmmmm.

Stage 3 MTB 22km 282m ascent
Not much MTB in this stage. This stage broke me. First few controls were spiked but then on to 6 the tracks did strange things. After meeting other confused crews, we found 6 and proceeded to 7. Even after relocating, the tracks did more strange things and we ended up on the other side of the plantation with contours everywhere. After a demoralising ride we got the hill. We left our bikes at the bottom and started the climb. It took about 20 minutes......to get 200m. This climb used up all my energy as I could not, not matter how slow I went, avoid having my heart rate go through the roof. Another mentally destroying never ending hill on the way to TA3.

Transition here was slow as I was having my bad patch. Lots of quitting thoughts running through my head. I didn't dare say anything but it was hard. Ate another muffin, gel and had some gatorade.

Stage 4 Rogaine 5km 159m ascent
Did the minimum and got 2 controls for I think 35min. The hills were still big and I was still in awe. I was actually impressed that Murray could find so many hills in close vicinity to each other.

TA4 was still slow. Bad patch was getting worse and I didn't want to do the maze. I was shivering and in front of the fire sitting there. Had some spaghetti bolognese, 2 caffeine tabs and some more to drink. A well timed, unempathetic "all in or all out" from Boltboi and was enough to get me into the maze which I refused to 5 minutes earlier. That was the turning point. The movement warmed me up and I began to recover nicely from here on in.

Stage 5 MTB 23km 195m ascent
More hills but I was used to them this time. I asked Boltboi once, how many contours, 3? When he said only 40m of ascent I felt positively surprised! It was still hard work and slow going but I had started to pick up and that was important. I tried not to look at my speedo as our progress was angonisingly slow.
edit: even though I was starting to pick up, I have very little memory of this leg o_0

TA5 was a great transition. The best for me in fact. Some food, a quick change of clothes and were out. Matty was taking his time because he was having his bad patch here or was he just chatting someone up beside the fire?

Stage 6
This was a revelation. Our pace was quick for a walk, especially considering it was at the tail end of the event. I was in great spirits (food and caffeine related I think) and even though the pace was high, I did my best to keep up. The slight hills on this stage hurt though and I was very glad it was mostly down hill. I even felt like running and we ran down was of the hills towards the end of the walk and the finish straight too.

Very happy with our result. Our strategy of doing the bare minimum paid off well with a time that would have got 10th place. Can't wait for more.

Paddling 45:00 intensity: (15:00 @2) + (20:00 @3) + (10:00 @4) 7.0 km (9.3 kph)
shoes: Custom Kayaks Mentor

Who's idea was this?
Morning training session meant I was up at a time that only a few years ago I would be coming home.
It was cold. I was cold. The water was co... warm actually and not as bad as I expected.
Started the session and didn't feel good at all. Wobbled everywhere and fell in once. We were doing the killer intervals (6x5min,5x3min)
At one stage I turned to abandon the session but on the way back I decided to stay on the water and just paddle at my own pace practising staying upright. Managed to do that without a fall and even caught the back of a wave on the way into shore for a textbook landing.

Running (not so slow) 29:52 intensity: (9:00 @0) + (49 @1) + (2:16 @2) + (8:17 @3) + (9:30 @4) 4.23 km (7:04 / km)
ahr:148 max:176 shoes: Salomon XA Pro 3D

Not so slow run today. I figured I can't have too long a break between runs. It's been a week and a half since the last one so I tested the shins today and they did ok. Not great mind you with a few twinges in the bottom and top 3rd's of the right leg, but manageable. Iced'm afterwards for a good 25minutes.
Sad about the stupid shins.
happy about the pace (given 1k was wu/cd at walking pace)

Roadie (Commute) 54:40 intensity: (6:07 @0) + (2:26 @1) + (6:26 @2) + (18:02 @3) + (16:22 @4) + (5:17 @5) 25.43 km (27.9 kph)
ahr:158 max:189 shoes: Giant TCR C1

I think this might be the fastest time into work yet. Managed to get up to 57kph down the hill on Hepburn Ave thanks to Jen's advice: "Keep pedalling downhill". Also managed to have someone tag on the back of me. That made me work a bit harder and I almost popped. I glanced at the HRM at one stage and I could see the line right at the top of zone 5 so I eased off. Funny, it didn't feel that hard, just fast with my legs spinning lots.

Note

Yay! I've found a place to live! Joondalup here I come.

Roadie (Wet n Wild) 1:01:13 intensity: (5:30 @0) + (4:14 @1) + (13:57 @2) + (31:27 @3) + (6:05 @4) 24.7 km (24.2 kph)
shoes: Giant TCR C1

The wind didn't turn around like it should have. If it had, I wouldn't have had rain stinging my face. Nor would I have had the joy of watching the water stream up from my tyre and then get blown sideways as soon as it was in the air. And I would have got to training on time too.

But all that doesn't matter as training was cancelled. Yep, cancelled. How the hell do these surf life saving people expect to save lives if they can't even train with a bit of wind about?
