Plan today was to drive up to Shorthills to check out the course conditions for Laura Secord next weekend. Thought it would be fun to explore a new trail and get a sense of what the trail conditions would be like. Was going to hike for time on feet as I've got a couple of things coming up where that would be useful, but once I got out there, I had a hard time not running so ended up running most of it after hiking the first 45 minutes or so. They had a lot of fresh snow so running actually felt easier than trekking did.

Course conditions were a mixed bag - in some spots, there was tons of mud underneath the snow which was tough going, but in others, the layer of snow on top made it great to run on and the trail felt firm underneath. Imagine next weekend we'll be getting a bit of everything! Course looks fun though!

Up in TO for Stephania's birthday, she mapped out a route that was supposed to be a trail run to the Brickworks market. We got on a subway to go further out so we could make the route longer...some trail system directions that took us through a bunch of urban areas and had a million directions. Those who saw my funny FB video of Stephania literally sliding down a hill will see that trail conditions were not great - everything was sheer ice and very slow going. After a few falls, we went to Plan B which involved cutting the route a bit short, heading back to hear place, and then going for lunch at a delicious raw vegan place followed by a trip to MEC.

Wanted to run outside in the sunshine but have been under the weather for a few days so made a pit stop at the gym on the way home from work instead.

Strength Training 30:00 [4]

Jillian Michaels SHRED class at the gym. Had always wanted to try one of these and the timing worked out tonight. Going to feel this tomorrow I'm sure!

Nice to know that the stepmill has a sense of humour. When I got on it, it told me to "enjoy my workout." Ha ha ha...

Strength Training 1:20:00 [2]

Last of the skills/drills/thrills (thankfully no spills) clinics with Sheldon in Markham. Have really enjoyed these sessions, even though I make a lot of wisecracks to the contrary. Hopefully will find a way to keep them up, except for the jump squats because I hate them the most.

Legs felt surprisingly good after yesterday but thought they could use a bit of a shake out before this afternoon.

Running 2:58:00 [3] 25.0 km (7:07 / km)
shoes: Montrail Mountain Masochist

With Laura Secord a mere 3 weeks away, really wanted to go into that knowing I'd covered the distance already. Bash had the same distance in mind, so after much deliberation we met up somewhere in Etobicoke. Bash gets credit for the legwork on choosing the location, which was a bit more challenging than we had both expected but also probably more achilles-friendly than some of the other ideas we were floating around. We both carried yaktrax and put them on a couple of km in as the paved trail had a good layer of snowy slush on it - they definitely helped. We were both pretty ready to be done around 20km (beauty of doing an out and back is that it didn't matter...car was still 5km away) but the sun kept popping out and every once in awhile there would be 10 runnable metres. Great to have Bash's company for this run!

We ended up getting back to the cars at 24.8km so ran around the parking lot to make sure we got our 25km in. :)

I swear this felt like a 8, but know that's just in my mind so I can't log it that way.

Rowing 10:00 [3]

A little bit of everything this morning at the gym. Realized I hadn't rowed in awhile and should start doing some of this, wanted to do a short run in my lunas, and resigned myself to a short commitment to the step mill.

Was not planning to run today but with a day as lovely as this, how could I resist. So I made myself a deal that I could run to the next road over and back. Shorts and no jacket...amazing.

Orienteering race 1:19:12 [3]
shoes: Salomon Spikecross

Stars O-cup race. Nice to have a race so close to home! Fricking freezing at the start but day was gorgeous once we got going. The trek across the field in knee + high snow was hilarious, and we were all envying Bash in her snowshoes at the front of the pack! Like all my orienteering races, felt I got off to a bit of a rough start in terms of adjusting the map and figuring out which trails were going to be there. Made a questionable decision to do "g" on the first box. No one else seemed to be out there! Finally heard some voices and FunRun helped me figure out which stream I was standing on! Tough slog to "g" and back up to 2. Rest of the race went fine. Took long routes on the second box so I could stay on trails as much as possible. Had a bit of a bobble going the wrong way from 6-7 but corrected before I got myself too discombobulated. One last slog across the snowfield and there you go.

Nice big lunch crowd at Martinis' afterwards. Kinda wish these races would continue!

Running 2:11:00 [3] 19.0 km (6:54 / km)
shoes: Montrail Mountain Masochist

After last week's postholing debacle, Mrs. Tiny and I decided to try someplace a little better traveled for a long run this morning, so we headed up to Hilton Falls hoping the trails would be in a bit better condition. Trails and temperature were both amazing and it was a day you were just so happy to be outside! Mrs. Tiny was a trooper with a nasty hack still going on. Went to the Mohawk Chop House for lunch afterwards and had a nice dark ale and fish and chips beside a fire.

Mrs. Tiny and I had run planned and I suggested the Hydrocut. For some reason, I was sure that all the trails would be packed down and lovely and yeah...they weren't! Started at the Glasgow side but other than a short packed snowshoe trail, found little that was runnable. Post-holed up the hill to the pines in the hopes that the multi-use trail would be better, which it was. Ran a bunch of loops over there and then opted for the road back to the car in lieu of the post-hole back in the other direction. Other than the fact that Mrs. Tiny said a definitive "NO!" when I said I wanted to run down the railway line, was a great run.
