Oceania Sprint Champs M20E - 3rd.

Well this felt like a very chaotic and unconvincing run. Started well, chose a route to 1 which was probably slower but ah well. Spotted the "trap" at 2, then it went downhill. Got 2 fine and had a half-planned route-choice to 3 which didn't matter given its simplicity. Hesitated a bit just before coming into the buildings checking if I could get through, then got to the gap in building where I was pretty sure the control was for it to not be there so continued thinking I'd miscounted, but reached the weird open area thing surrounded by trees so turned back. Looked around briefly and decided that maybe it was on the stairs and on first glance it wasn't there so ran up them in case it was on the top floor for it to be hidden around the corner. When I went to a sprint O workshop 1 of the main points consistently repeated was controls should not be hidden in sprint O because it is about route-choice. Only lost 20-25 seconds at least (others lost minutes). Good until 8 where I wasn't sure what green was crossable and the number 12 obscured a passageway so I had an excessively windy route and lost ~10 seconds. The only problem until 12 was not seeing an almost illegible gap between a building and a wall despite seeing it on course. Lost 5-8 seconds with that. Most of the course after that was running with stupidly dead legs like 13, 17, 18, 19 and 20, which probably helped me but wasn't fun sprint O. The light green around 21 and 22 was questionable since it looked like every other garden bed on the map. I exited 22 through green and jumped off a wall, both passable, to be instantly bombarded with photos from 2 photographers causing me to excessively check my map regarding OOB crossing, leading into a mistake at 23 where I ran past a control tucked behind a hedge against a building. I corrected but had probably lost up to 20 seconds on this leg from photographers and overshooting, but also 3 places (2nd - 5th). Felt like my run was pretty average so pushing to the finish was kind of hard but apparently I was running decently according to my splits. I won 27-28 outright in M20 and 21 despite it only being a 10 second leg which I am very proud of. Finished in 2nd place, 3 seconds down on Zefa. Then Alvin came in and absolutely smoked my time by a minute and 7 seconds. David was beating me by 2 seconds at the last control but somehow he managed to run the 50m chute in 10 seconds to my 7 and lost the bronze by a single second (Sam was also 2 seconds down on me in 5th).

Well that was probably my worst sprint since MSW at Manor Lakes, but at least that one was a very good course. Thought the area was underutilized and the controls were hidden, however there was still some fun stuff. Happy where I placed though and it gives me good confidence into the future that I can do really well with a clean run.

Ran the course from Astons december camp at Rowdy Flat and tried to find the tapes (if they still existed). Couldn't find the tape on the 1st control so I wasted time despite being on the right feature. No more tapes through to 4 (however I was not particular sure if I was in the right spot at 3). Found a tape at 5-8, then met up with Oskar who started 2 minutes after me at 9 while I was searching for a missing tape. Ran together to 10 but I ran past it without realized and decided my relocation was enough to warrant finding the control. Skipped from 12-17, finally starting to understand the terrain, but I hit my foot on a tree or something just before 18 and it suddenly went really hot so for safety cut 18-23. Fun area that takes a little while to get used to.

O training at You Yangs. Well this map looks spectacular and the runnable bush looks extremely fast, however a majority of the technical section is filled with this extremely thick undergrowth that isn't particularly scratchy but doesn't move. Bailed at 1, cutting to 6 and 7 then took a running break (see below) before doing 13-12-11-10 with 13 and 10 being extremely thick. There is so much that is good about this map, the only thing letting it down is the veg.

Up flinders peak and back towards 13. This appears to be the only hill between Melbourne and Geelong which equals long views.

Day 1 of Tassie trip with Oskar and Selwyn. Drove to south west of Yackandandah and set up camp. Went for a short run afterwards by myself as Oskar wanted a longer one and Selwyn was going to cook. Was a nice run on a mtb singletrack surrounding by runnable bush and erosion detail?!?! Potential orienteering map perhaps. Beautiful area.

Hard run up the track (x6) then orienteer down (x7), followed by a random rest of about 90 seconds. Pretty good technically but fatigued on the hills a bit. Then I died an hour later and slept in bed for 2 hours.
