WCOC Paugussett: Red course

cmorse

1. +00:15started, picked up map, THEN had to go get a map case, stuffing it as I ran out of the parking lot - trail low, then up the stone wall
2. shot for the white gap high, hit the trail then down the stone wall and across, green slash didn't look so bad..
3. +00:10since the green slash didn't look so bad, I headed straight up into it, wasn't bad at all, a few berberis stabs here and there down the stone wall but hesitated as I didn't see the large boulder I was expecting as I hit the end of the wall, just expecting something more prominent
4. +00:15left of the line, a bit slow in some of the stony ground. Up the reentrant, slowed a bit as the rock on the far side looked 'cliffish' but then looked further up and saw the flag further on. Need to reestablish my estimation of distance
5. +15:00BOOM - I've totally screwed up any control that I've ever visited in this area. Went to top of hill ok, in retrospect might have been slight S of the very top, spied a likely looking reentrant down which my control should be - apparently I was going down the one hidden under the green lines as I got S of the control and lost my focus, floundered for a good 15 minutes as the 'broken cliffs' on the map looked about as solid as the larger one N of the control. Finally bailed to the top of the hill (the very top) and easily nailed it. Also didn't help that I was expecting a larger boulder than what I found near the control.
6. +05:00down the hill, up the trail, bash through some laurel, then proceed to go up the wrong reentrant. Figured it out pretty quickly, but then found myself on a spur looking at two vernal pools, one on either side. Spent some time trying to make things match without success. Decided to bail back to stream, and in passing the westernmost pool, saw the flag in the shadows..
7. up the stream then in pretty cleanly
8. +00:40wanting to avoid the crap and bad vibes around #5 I went SW and picked up the trail on the clean end of the hill. then in along stonewall but at one junction there were extra trails on the ground so I paused to verify my location and proceeded slowly from there
9. +01:00up to the road, then down through the fresh slash, picking my way
10. south of the hill, along edge of marsh, slowed down by not avoiding some rocky ground, but right into the circle
11. +01:30pretty much straight on the line up the hill, matching features, but got just shy of the circle (and out of sight of cliff/bag) and noted a prominent stonewall in reentrant to my R - none on map - damn.... stopped and studied for a bit before spotting a short wall under the purple circle - circle should have been cut or tweaked to not obscure the wall
12. straightforward, but moving cautiously
13. clean, right where I wanted it to be as I crested the hill
14. quicker now since I knew where it was (and was keeping my eye on that stonewall)
15. +05:00super short leg, tried to read the reentrants across the larger one and miscounted or something, ended going up into one further up, not staying focused and wandering a bit, eventually coming near #19, then back to #13 and retried, getting it this time.
16. this ones getting easier....
17. +01:00N of the line, then over a hill and in - slower than it should have been
18. +00:40right of line, got in the circle but both cliffs on the same contour and didn't notice the flag above...
19. had been here before so right around S end of hill and in
20. straight back......
21. +04:00should have just followed the stream, but the woods were open and runnable (and downhill) and I got suckered into running fast and drifting downhill to my L, way too far left as it turned out since I hit the trail near the sharp bend just E of 22 - had to trudge back up the trail and in
22. spied Tony Muffati coming in to #21, so I beat a hasty down the trail, up the hill and gone...
F. straight through the nice woods at a good clip, dropping off a steep embankment (not mapped) onto the road and trucking on in... Trail might have been just as fast, but from the top of the hill, the straight line through woods was calling my name..
