Back did not enjoy the exertions of yesterday. I could hardly move despite repeated warm up / down and stretching.

Orienteering race (Micro-Maze Qualifier) 3:52 [4] 0.35 km (11:03 / km)
shoes: Integrator

Was going well until the numbering threw me (218 for #9) which meant I thought I was at #8. Navigating to #9 when I was already at it obviously didn't work, resulting in me leaving the maze, returning to #9, then continuing, which wasted 52s.

Orienteering race (Maize Maze Qualifier) 10:45 [4] 1.7 km (6:19 / km)
shoes: Integrator

Good run. Forgot to start watch and ran a couple of metres down the wrong path at one point but otherwise pretty happy. Final qualification was based on (4A+B)/2 giving:

1st Howard Alcock LEI M40 03:06 1st 12:56 5th 25:20 12:40
2nd Richard Robinson NOC M21 03:42 6th 11:20 3rd 26:08 13:04
3rd Joe Taunton NGOC M21 03:52 9th 10:45 1st 26:13 13:06
4th Peter Hodkinson NOC M21 04:05 13th 11:06 2nd 27:26 13:43
5th Roger Phillips LEI M35 03:40 4th 13:07 6th 27:47 13:54

Orienteering race (Maize Maze Day Score) 22:08 [4] 2.7 km (8:12 / km)
shoes: Integrator

Separate race. Had to visit controls in sequential pairings (often geographically distant).
Some people (including me) had maps with extra 'small paths' (printing errors). In many places these 'corresponded' (happened to coincide) with small cut throughs (presumably created by public maze visitors). Started off ignoring these, but decided as they had been 'added' to the map they must be useable. But even once I had made this decision there were places where it was blatantly obvious that there wasn't a path, meaning a planned route had to be revised.
Obviously this was unfair as in many places those with the error maps could significantly reduce the optimum route in some places. Conversely it made the map very cluttered and was extremely offputting when a 'path' was marked but it patently didn't exist.
Missed one pairing out anyway so was 20pts down.
7 PM

Orienteering long (Maize Maze Night Final) 16:09 [4] 2.4 km (6:44 / km)
shoes: Integrator

Chasing Start Night Final - first across the line wins. Started 26s behind leader (Howard Alcock), 2s behind RR, 37s ahead of Peter Hodkinson.
Started simply trying to hang on to RR. Was not too far behind at #2, and we had caught up HA, but I then took the longer route to #3; RR and HA got away, PH almost caught me up. PH was soon breathing down my neck and got ahead when I took a wrong turning briefly just before #5. Still in touch with him at #6, before he took a different route to #7. I must have made up some time here as I saw RR leaving #7 and punched ahead of HA, who was just behind me for the next couple until #10. I lost my head here a bit as the pressure of keeping the pace up got to me, meaning my route to #11 was extremely non-optimal. I went all the way around the southernmost path, and to get to this I initally even attempted to cross the bridge near the entrance... I thought the race was lost here, but fortunately I think all the top four (possibly HA excepted?) missed the best route somehow. I was then on my own for #12-#14, although I did see PH (who had finished) as I passed through on my way to #13.
At this stage I thought I was in 4th place, but as I came into #14, HA was just leaving. Unfortunately there was only a short section to the finish (and overtaking in the narrow maze is difficult). But luckily for me he missed the turning by a metre and I managed to sneak ahead to finish 1s ahead (for what I thought was 3rd). However, I soon learnt that RR hadn't finished as he came in 30s later, having had trouble with the final control, thus making me 2nd. But that wasn't the final twist as PH had missed / mispunched #7 meaning I somehow ended up winning!
Got a little trophy which was a nice surprise. A fun series of races and the chasing start was excellent. Good job I managed to borrow a torch!

Overall 7-2 victory for the team so a good start to my role as the A team captain!

CLARO Brown at Lindley Moor.
Never really got into the map. Thinking about running and pretty much hoping to stumble across the flags (case in point numbers 1, 4, 8, 10... well actually all of them; just these were some of the ones where I noticed my lack of technique due to massive time losses). I think this is definitely the kind of area where having run here before is a BIG advantage, but still no excuse for my complete disregard of the map. Right from the start to #1 I took a cursory glance then ran where it looked nice; not towards where the control was on the map.
Idiotic.
Anyway, I mispunched at #19, 'where' (as I punched the wrong control), I thought to myself, 'hmmm, this should be in the open, but it's in the wood.' Had I had more faith in the mapping of the vegetation I might have questioned this at the time.
Things of note:
#19-20 I initially ran along the north side of the wall. On the map this was fight. In reality there was a forest road adjoining beautiful white woodland.
#23-24 Can't think of many more runnable bits of wood than this, yet it was marked light green?

DVO Long Technical at Shipley Country Park
The 'technical' aspect was through the omission of paths from the map... although this seemingly didn't include roads and vehicle tracks which were still shown. There were some tricky forested patches though, and I got caught out a few times. Very pleasant in the sunny park.

Not much of a chase - didn't see anyone on my course. Blew number 1 completely (didn't learn my lesson from yesterday regarding the mapping of the vegetation - but seriously, don't they have controllers for these events??) Where were the clearings? And what was going on with the paths? Puntered around thereafter to conclude a distinctly disappointing weekend of orienteering :(

Orienteering race (Caddihoe Chase Day 1) 1:15:27 [3] 9.0 km (8:23 / km) +280m 7:15 / km
shoes: Integrator

The tough forest should have suited me today. However, I found the map to be very inconsistent - especially with regards to the vegetation. Significant time losses on 2,3,11,12,13 and 19, due at least in part to the mapping. I must, however, accept some of the blame for only relying on one / two features. Unfortunately I also struggled physically, especially towards the end, with blisters on my insteps and a bad stitch. Disappointing.

NGOC Chairman's Challenge. Mallards Pike. Missed this yesterday so did it today instead. One of the best areas around at the moment. Got them all, around 3min late. This would have been the highest gross score, but I would have needed to get them all and be 15min early to win on handicap! Controls / other competitors might have assisted to some extent, but not that much...
