Felt good on the warm up. Plan was to take it easy at the start and build into it a bit. Knew there would be some green and compass and had to get those right.
Headed off from the start, not too fast but not slow enough either! Drifted right, saw the knoll and knew I was drifting right. Continued on over the slope trying to correct left. Saw some people in the forest who looked like control watchers and drifted towards them, again right. They were actually watching no. 2 and I began to suspect this. Saw the kite and knew straight away. Turned around and headed over to 1. Was a little low then and dropped ~1 min total on this control. Not the best start.
was easy cause I knew where it was.
again I left 2 offline, against what I said in the start box. Hit the path and corrected, berating myself. Got the control fine.
I didn't man through the green as much as I should have maybe and got pushed back out. Knew where I was and got the control and it was fine. Still probably 20s lost.
I decided to go around for rather than ploughing through the green. Seemed to work ok and felt decent running.
was easy enough
Jan Petrzela was behind me know, passed me briefly but I still took 7 before him, spiking it excellently.
was into the green again, but following the ride to the clearing. Was low on oxygen behind Petrzela hesitated slightly as I had no real idea where we were but decided to stay confident was still with him when he punched.
was through tougher green and Petrzela dissappeared. I was way left on my bearing then. Kinda knew it and corrected finding a ditch junction. Had no idea which ditch it was, started heading the wrong way but quickly copped it and went back and followed it the right way to the control. Dropped another ~1 min.
I came straight out of the green and to the track. Angle was bad here and it probably cost me a few seconds again. Rest of the leg was pretty good though
was short through green. got it fine using the veg changes
back into the open forest on the compass. Could see green patches about and used the valley to make the circle bigger. Saw Petrzela heading to 16 absolutely flying.
was easy. Compass saw the feature.
saw the contol but suffered on the very tiny hill that it was
more suffering as I went up hill. Kept a little left and used the open to spike it.
was great fun. Flying down the hill past the fence and bam straight into a wall of green at full speed. Two control watchers on the ground, turned left there's the control. Perfect.
is through the green. Focus on the compass and I find it grand
is more green. Run along the path a little first and then cut in. Small bit right dropped ~5s
back out to the track. Along to the junction and in along the white forest
compass, short leg
popped out to the path to the right, used that and the next ride through the green and only a short way through actual forest to the control
compass, crossed the ditch junction where there was a control
compass out of the green, small bit off line at the start but corrected. ~10s
plan was to take the path around from but the forest seemed ok so I went straight. Was the right call. Kinda lost my bearings a little and came out on the ditch too far right. ~15s dropped
easy control
running
finish
Happy with my time when I finished and level of mistakes. Then as time went on I saw my position plummet and I got less and less happy. Analysing it I made a few mistakes and it probably adds up to nearly 3 mins in reality. This is more than I thought when I finished. Thinking about the training I have done though it seems reasonable enough that I would be this far down, and noting that green is probably where I am worst at orienteering I have concluded that it was a largely indifferent run, neither great not terrible.
