Oing in the Phoenix Park. Took it like a kind of interval session but I was feeling pretty heavy.

Missed 9 cause it was in the wrong place. Otherwise was good. Hugh caught me at 13 and I hung onto him for the last bit but was having a tough time of it.

Running (road) warm up/down 15:00 [2]
shoes: VJ Falcon

Warm up before the relay. Feeling a bit heavy but a few pick ups and I felt a bit better.

Orienteering race 41:12 [5] **** 6.8 km (6:04 / km) +105m 5:37 / km
spiked:16/20c shoes: VJ Falcon

WUOC relay.

Conor had a strong run coming in not too far down. Eoin was decent but not as good as Conor and I went out in 30th just behind the Latvian guy.

Hung on to him to the start kite. Was pretty nervous to number 1 in the green but did it a bit safely to the path. Path to 2 and straight to 3. Saw the Latvian guy punching it but he was pretty gone really.

Long leg to 4 and he was miles ahead. Had a little miss to 5 but was running ok. Up to 6 and 7 feeling ok got them nicely. Around a bit to 8 and great downhill to 9. Missed 10 too high reading the wrong green. Got a bit stuck on 11 too. Probably ~40s between these two controls.
Then hard running and orienteered well for the next few. Weren't too hard but the green with the intensity made them tough.

Pretty happy with this run. Closer to the leaders than in the middle when they were running faster. Cleaner race.

O-training 15:00 [2] ***

Retaped the blisters and they are good to go now. Warm upi on the warm up map. Just getting into it. Seemed solid and was happy. Felt good.

Orienteering 45:43 [5] **** 6.8 km (6:43 / km) +75m 6:22 / km

WUOC Middle.

Felt good on the warm up. Plan was to take it easy at the start and build into it a bit. Knew there would be some green and compass and had to get those right.

Headed off from the start, not too fast but not slow enough either! Drifted right, saw the knoll and knew I was drifting right. Continued on over the slope trying to correct left. Saw some people in the forest who looked like control watchers and drifted towards them, again right. They were actually watching no. 2 and I began to suspect this. Saw the kite and knew straight away. Turned around and headed over to 1. Was a little low then and dropped ~1 min total on this control. Not the best start.

2 was easy cause I knew where it was.

3 again I left 2 offline, against what I said in the start box. Hit the path and corrected, berating myself. Got the control fine.

4 I didn't man through the green as much as I should have maybe and got pushed back out. Knew where I was and got the control and it was fine. Still probably 20s lost.

5 I decided to go around for rather than ploughing through the green. Seemed to work ok and felt decent running.

6 was easy enough

7 Jan Petrzela was behind me know, passed me briefly but I still took 7 before him, spiking it excellently.

8 was into the green again, but following the ride to the clearing. Was low on oxygen behind Petrzela hesitated slightly as I had no real idea where we were but decided to stay confident was still with him when he punched.

9 was through tougher green and Petrzela dissappeared. I was way left on my bearing then. Kinda knew it and corrected finding a ditch junction. Had no idea which ditch it was, started heading the wrong way but quickly copped it and went back and followed it the right way to the control. Dropped another ~1 min.

10 I came straight out of the green and to the track. Angle was bad here and it probably cost me a few seconds again. Rest of the leg was pretty good though

11 was short through green. got it fine using the veg changes

12 back into the open forest on the compass. Could see green patches about and used the valley to make the circle bigger. Saw Petrzela heading to 16 absolutely flying.

13 was easy. Compass saw the feature.

14 saw the contol but suffered on the very tiny hill that it was

15 more suffering as I went up hill. Kept a little left and used the open to spike it.

16 was great fun. Flying down the hill past the fence and bam straight into a wall of green at full speed. Two control watchers on the ground, turned left there's the control. Perfect.

17 is through the green. Focus on the compass and I find it grand

18 is more green. Run along the path a little first and then cut in. Small bit right dropped ~5s

19 back out to the track. Along to the junction and in along the white forest

20 compass, short leg

21 popped out to the path to the right, used that and the next ride through the green and only a short way through actual forest to the control

22 compass, crossed the ditch junction where there was a control

23 compass out of the green, small bit off line at the start but corrected. ~10s

24 plan was to take the path around from but the forest seemed ok so I went straight. Was the right call. Kinda lost my bearings a little and came out on the ditch too far right. ~15s dropped

25 easy control

26 running

finish

Happy with my time when I finished and level of mistakes. Then as time went on I saw my position plummet and I got less and less happy. Analysing it I made a few mistakes and it probably adds up to nearly 3 mins in reality. This is more than I thought when I finished. Thinking about the training I have done though it seems reasonable enough that I would be this far down, and noting that green is probably where I am worst at orienteering I have concluded that it was a largely indifferent run, neither great not terrible.

Note

Lazing about and then spectating the WUOC sprint. Played a decent amount of sitting table tennis played.

Maybe should have gone for an easy jog but probably no biggy. Back is pretty sore though so I also did quite a bit of lying down to try and make it feel better.

Note

Back is really sore. Will not run the sprint tomorrow to try and get it better. See how I am after a sleep.

WUOC Long.

Wasn't sure how my body was for a long distance but decided I'd give it a go anyway. Probably went out a bit hard in the end but I felt pretty good all the way as far as the spectator. Then the last loop was super tough and I suffered big time. Course was pretty easy really with time losses only coming from incorrect route choices. In terms of missed controls probably lost <30s. Should have been less but body was really tired near the end.

1 was short but I was trying to plan the long leg to 2 as well so I wasn't flying. Hit the spur and dropped into the control.

2 I decided to go right for, and this was really right. Probably didn't save that much climb but I felt I was running stronly up the path and took the control pretty well in the end.

3 took the small path and contoured. It was crag top so coming from above was a thing.

4 down to the track, along to the spur and down it to the control.

5 was the first time I felt tired. Down through the green valley and up the steep other side. Andreas Kyburz then came past me at the top of the hill and I saw him punch the control (along with Aine)

6 I went right on the path again. Was better as it was really easy.

7 Went pretty straight here actually. Kept a bit lower to avoid some climb. Hesitated a little short but only like 5s lost.

8 was down the hill. Was slightly off line leaving 7 but corrected early again losing <5s

9 was straight. Aimed off slightly and dropped into it

10 I went around for which I think was better. Was doing some planning ahead though and didnt pay attention to where I was and cut off the track a bit early. Maybe 10s lost here.

11 spectator run through. Had a Gel and a sports drink. Thanks Greg!

12 Suffer suffer suffer up the huge climb to the top of the ridge. Had a tough time starting running again but an easy control.

13 saw the ride under the purple line so I took that!

14 Left on the track. Really tired on the hills now. Australian and Spaniard passed me out.

15 was a little left for but no time loss as it was actually better running! NZL passed me here.

16 walked most of this up the hill as I was wrecked. trivial control

17 left on the track. Stopped when I hit terrain again. Legs were gone. Trying hard to run again I missed it by ~5s

18 Left on the track.

19 left on the track

20 Left on the track. Back again on the same track as I had been in the other direction the last few times! Best route choice for my condition.

21 out the the track and took that around the green. Dropped into it easy.

22 contour around. Only control I beat Eoin on in the second half!

23 left on the track!

24 downhill to the last control woo!

Went for an easy jog with Eoin and Colm first thing inthe morning to loosen out the lags. Felt pretty nice. We found a skatepark and were messing about on the jumps in there for a bit too.
10 AM

Note

Then it was rest and headed off to the sprint relay. Had to kill and hour and a half with Conor so we had a walk around the park the race was to be in. Saw some crazy chickens and a few other animals.

Sprint relay went decently for us. Everyone seemed happy enough anyway and we came 20th.

Sprint Model today. Area was just beside the accom so it was nice and handy. Took it easy enough, just cruising. Easy enough mostly just had to make a decision on the routes
