Orienteering race 54:03 [3] **** 5.7 km (9:29 / km)
ahr:150 max:171 13c shoes: Inov8 Roclite 295

Munster League, Inch Sand Dunes.

Went for the Green course as I was just out to test the calf. First time running since JK was a short jog to warm up on the beach, felt fine.

Started off at a steady pace, not too fast, but still messed up the 1st control, I don't like long legs to start on Inch. Didn't lose massive amount of time but still was closer to 2 than 1 when I relocated. Just after leaving 5 I put my left foot in a hole and went down, ankle hurt a bit after that, still sore but nothing serious. Rest of the controls were straightforward, no real trouble. Ran at a steady pace throughout, didn't push it. Was pleased to finish and not be in pain. Went into the sea for 20mintues paddling to cool the legs down.

Had some similar legs to Brown course so will compare my splits when the results are uploaded.

Garmin said I ran 7.72km and did 209m climb.

Tralee-Reanagowan-Castleisland-Tralee

Legs felt tired this morning and that was before I even started. Got on the bike as planned on schedule and thought it was a bit too cold, should have worn more, but decided not to turn back for more clothes. It did warm up as the cycle went on.

Uphill to Reanagowan went ok, started a bit slowly on the 1st half of the climb but happy with the second half. Pace was fine too on the boggy stretch towards Castleisland and the descent was fast. Traffic slowed me down a bit through the town but picked up pace again on the far side. The wind then became a factor, felt it was a headwind so had trouble settling on a comfortable gear and a comfortable pace. Really started to struggle before I came to the roundabout at Earl of Desmond but started to feel better on the short descent into the roundabout. Kept going into Tralee and spotted 2 people on bikes so that pushed me to pass them. Had to stop near Nancy Myles to fix the saddle, messed around with it this morning but musn't have tightened it enough. Put it back up and then finished the cycle.

Outside of Tralee I covered 42.07km at an avg speed of 28.6kph. Max speed today was 51.1pkh.

Note

Decided on training schedule before IOC, orienteering tomorrow (green course) and then a cycle on Monday before physio on Tuesday. Resting then on Tuesday and Wednesday. Only going to do the Green course tomorrow on Inch as the calf needs to be tested but Brown would not be a good idea.

Tralee-Farranfore-Castleisland-Tralee.

Wind, damn wind, felt like it was into my face on the way to Farranfore, and then the last 5 miles also felt like it was into my face but I was going the opposite direction to earlier.

Was looking fairly swish in my TT1 kit this evening, no one to comment on how good I looked though!

Pleased with the effort I put in, but it's only cycling, not running, will have to do for the time being though. I actually lost around 1 minute too today stopping outside the Earl of Desmond Hotel near the end as the chain came off the big ring on the bike, quick fix.

Excluding the town it was 38.45km at an avg speed of 29.8kph. Anything close to 30 is what I aim for.

Tralee-Farranfore-Castlemaine-Tralee.

Sun shining still so makes getting up on the bike so much easier. Got new batteries today for the speedometer but still not working, will google problem next!

Bit of wind around again to cause trouble, hard to figure out what direction it was coming from, but definitely a head wind on the straight stretch out from Castlemaine before the hill.

Road between Farranfore and Castlemaine has some nasty bumpy bits, getting a bit fed up with rough roads.

Just before the start of the hill I saw a lad on a bike in front of me on the straight, increased speed as a result and flew past him! No sign of him 5km later at the top. Not too pleased with ascent, for some reason my achilles on the left leg has been feeling a bit dodgy today and for the first time ever it was slightly uncomfortable at times cycling. Will see how it is tomorrow.

Garmin says for the out of town lap it was 40.46km at an avg speed of 28.5pkh. Max speed today was 48.5kph.

Tralee-Farranfore-Castleisland-Tralee

Sunny evening again but nasty, or at least it felt like one to me, on road to Farranfore and parts of road between Farranfore and Castleisland. Slowed me down a bit. Speedometer on the bike is still messed up, might try to get a new battery tomorrow at lunch. Return from Castleisland was nice since the wind was behind me. Legs felt a bit tired to start out with but over the last 10 miles they were fine.

Section outside of town was 38.42km at an avg speed of 29kph.

Pleased with avg speed on main road section, need to keep it as high as possible, especially as this route is flat enough,

Note
(rest day)

Physio this evening. I was in bits afterwards, she absolutely went to town on my calf, putting a hard session into it this week as next week she won't be able to due to race at the weekend. Supposedly it'll help things but I was very shook going home. She advised going to Banna and into the sea, so I did. Spent 15-20mins in the water, nice. Don't know how much that helped but it can't have made things worse. Calf is improved from last week, damage is in deep so that made things harder to get at, causing more pain. The lower part that also needed work last week was ok this week.

Tralee-Farranfore-Castlemaine-Tralee

Lovely evening, first time wearing shorts out, no tights. Also reduced layers on top to 2. Bit windy I felt at times but hardest part with wind was out from Castlemaine. Felt quite tired earlier today but still went ahead with the cycle, couldn't back out, too nice, and need as much training as I can get!

Overall i'm pleased with the cycle. Much faster than last week, Friday, average speed was way higher.

Between the speed limit signs I covered 40.4 km at an avg speed of 28.7kph. Last Friday the avg speed was 25.8kph for the same distance. I did keep pedalling all the way to the top today so that explains the difference, but rest day tomorrow so no reason to hold back.
