Orienteering race 1:07:50 [4] *** 9.0 km (7:32 / km) +300m 6:28 / km
spiked:20/21c shoes: Integrator

Night-O at Mendon. Route: 16 8 3 26 19 7 5 2 23 6 10 9 30 28 12 18 11 1 24 21 15 17.

Started well, and thought the corner I cut gave me a few meters back on the way to 3. It seemed my 26->19 route was non-standard, but I thought it was ok.

Things worked fine until 5. Looking at my GPS, it seems the tree was down across the path at about the right time to turn North, and that threw me off. The first time through I didn't recognize what had happened and was looking for the path - and then went astray. After re-orienting myself to where I was and making a second pass, I was late in leaving the path, and the flag was 3x further off the trail that where I was looking. A third effort was just plain wrong, and I got it on the fourth - about 7 minutes of error there.

The rest was reasonably clean.

I planned to get 29 after 23, but with the delay chopped that spur off.

The plan called for 30 -> 22 and then the southern 4 depending on time, but with the delay, I cut from 30 to 28.

And I planned to get everything remaining on the way back, but dropped 10 as the climb was a lot and it was out of the way. I might have had enough - but it could have been an 8 minute side-trip, and given how my speed had dropped off, I didn't want to risk it. (should have though)

Bit of flag pickup. Neat to see the half dozen+ deer staring at me from their spot in the grass.
