WU. Lots of necessary hanging around but the hype meant the time passed pretty quickly.

Jukola first leg, for KR second team 80th, 5.17 down on winner What an experience, where to start! Pre-start was just unbelievably exciting with the crowds and the music, with the pirates of the Caribbean theme tune at 10:57 only adding to this. Set off hard and made it unscathed to the start kite, thanks to a lot of pushing and shoving. Big path plod for the first leg and soon slotted in next to Martin Bostrom. Hit the first control bang on, which was a nice nerve settler. Lost some time at #3 when I must have ran within metres of the control on the wrong side of a crag - good news is that many many others did this as well so it wasn’t too damaging. Got into a full-on control-punching shoving fight at #5 with some other lads - absolute great fun. Then I realised that Jere (KR’s first team runner) was on my shoulder so we shared some codes and got through the next few all good - they were mostly very technically easy. Had no idea of positioning at this point but knew I must be high up cos I was being passed by the likes of IFK and stora tuna first team. Unfortunately lost time on the long leg when I got shafted by going through a disgusting bit of rough open when I should have stuck with the larger train. Dropped places big time here which was annoying but not much I could do. Took a disgustingly whacky route on the last longer leg, just following some lads who were clearly rage splitting and not really navigating. Did briefly find myself at the front of a pack here which was amusing. Made it through the next few tricky controls safe and nailed the one in the intricate contour section with a few other guys. One of them said ‘hallelujah’ upon finding it - you and me both brother. Then it was just a case of a testosterone-fuelled bash through the torrential rain to the finish. Overall, a crazy race which was definitely the most memorable I’ve done so far. Navigationally easy, but this just meant the trains and speed were utterly relentless and really felt like I was on the edge for the entire time. Was meant to be running long night until about 24 hours before but very glad I got the chance to do this. Team was just edged out of a top 30 in the end but that’s still an excellent result. Good stuff - great fun trip!
