WCOC long!

goal today was to not spend forever lost around controls :P

felt pretty good! had a bit of trouble with #8, struggling in the downed logged area and getting veered off bearing, but found a trail and recovered without wasting tooooo much time. was then able to run for some of the remainder of the course, which was good as it was so wet out and i was starting to get cold.

went to canmore to do some errands and then walked around town centre a bit. had yummy vegan ramen and checked out the pedestrian downtown zone.

didn't think to record whole walk until we started heading back to the truck and detoured on these pretty boardwalks running through town.

WCOC sprint!

fun to be out orienteering again! felt pretty good about how it went - my knee didn't give me any issues, so was able to move faster than i have been comfortable with lately. RJ started a minute behind me, so i was stressing the whole time about having her catch me. i did finish before her but she got me by 14s - waugh! :)

short loop at head-smashed-in buffalo jump. went to the museum part first - super interesting, especially after recently going to the makah museum in neah bay. e and i agreed we would rather have lived the makah lifestyle than the blackfoot lifestyle.

Note

we saw a bear!!!

were hanging out in the truck when we felt a thump and then the whole vehicle rocked a bit. i looked out the window from the bed on the passenger side and THERE WAS A BEAR RIGHT THERE.

it poked around a bit more and then continued up the road/creek from our campsite. whew! later we went out and saw it had taken a swipe at my camp chair - there was a faint muddy bear pawprint and a few holes in the mesh. why do bears always go after my outdoor gear? :P

guessing that the print we saw during yesterday's hike was indeed a bear!

Hiking 4:54:55 intensity: (3:34:58 @0) + (55:03 @1) + (24:41 @2) + (13 @3) 4.04 mi (1:13:00 / mi) +628m 49:13 / mi
ahr:112 max:152 shoes: La Sportiva Jackal - Opal/Paci

summit attempt of mt. ward from our random camping site.

e said it was a provisional peak on peakbagger, so we lugged his gps measuring equipment along. the plan was to measure both the top and key col of mt. ward.

first part of the hike was up the road/creek to the trailhead proper. along the way, we saw a print in the mud that looked really big and possibly bearlike - it didn't have claws though, so we weren't sure - maybe it was a person walking barefoot only on their toes??? got up to window mountain lake and skirted around the western edge before heading up the scree towards the key col. stopped partway up for a snack and saw a mountain goat just moseying along on the high ridge above us! also saw pika but no bighorn sheep...

got nearly nearly to the key col when the skies got super threatening and hail started falling. once we heard thunder 3x in a row, we decided it wasn't a good idea to be where we were at and retreated back down the mountain. got to quasi-glissade down a snowfield, then an easy hike back the way we came.

chinook lake loop CW
5 PM

Hiking 1:52:40 [0] 2.59 mi (43:30 / mi) +71m 40:07 / mi
ahr:87 max:117

we were planning on taking the inflatable SUPs out on chinook lake, but still felt really wiped out from the skyrace. so opted to go in search of a waterfall (we didn't find it, though we thought we could hear it) and did the chinook lake loop CCW instead.
