Running race 2:11:00 [4] 30.0 km (4:22 / km) +650m 3:56 / km
shoes: Mudclaw 333

Fairly hot day but mercifully it clouded over. The start felt quick and I was more or less hanging on to Ben up to 3. Alan, Harold and GG already out of sight. Ben took a better route to 4 and I got dropped. Weary of how far there was to go I slowed down a bit and got caught by John Smallwood who was taking some nice lines through the forest. Took a wrong turning out of 5 (should have just followed John) and didn't see anyone til the dog leg at 7. Realised I wasn't too far down at this point and perked up. Caught John again by 8, had a gel on the climb out of Holmbury and got the route to 9 right. Still felt O.K. so started winding the pace up, hoping to turn a corner and see that Ben or Alan had been dropped. Got to 11 and saw no-one so went into cruising mode, only to spot Cherry seconds later. Went past him at the bottom of the climb to 12 and flogged myself up the hill to get away. Managed not to screw up the descent to the finish to get 4th place.

Pretty pleased with how this went, could maybe have saved about 1 minute total in navigation/route choice but otherwise felt like I paced it well. In retrospect getting dropped so was early was probably a good thing.

SinS Day 3, Brown Clee
After last week's disaster I decided to take it steady and just try to get the navigation right. On the whole this worked and I hit most controls bang on which was pleasing. The notable exceptions being 8 where I was lazy with my exit direction, 9 where I had no plan at all, and 24 where despite being very careful I still couldn't find the pit amongst the heather. Also got confused at 1 where I couldn't pick out the ditch on the map so took a scenic route. Still not quick enough to relocate after making mistakes, so lost more time than necessary.
