Canoeing 2:20:00 [1] 9.16 mi (15:17 / mi)
slept:5.0

It looked like a great day to walk a canoe down a low river, so 75% of the WT team convened in Lowell, MI, which some may remember from a previous Summer Groove (my first race with darkness).

Greg ran stern with me up front, and MarkVT struggled to keep up in a wide short slow rec canoe versus us in his very nice, very comfortable Wenonah Escape. Mmmmmmmm

Portaging the light boat isn't too bad by oneself. But it would be quite a workout and tricky under last year's conditions!

Ran up the Grand a little at the end to pad time, then turned around and rocketed back.

I can't believe I forgot my Garmin in my truck, so here's a drawn version:

Running 19:16 intensity: (8 @0) + (12 @1) + (14:56 @2) + (4:00 @3) 2.0 mi (9:38 / mi) +1m 9:37 / mi

Pack testing w4j's MS-1. I loaded it with 7 lbs kitty litter and two full bike bottles. It runs pretty nice. No neck rub from the straps. The bottle retention is pretty slick - you can get them in and out to drink without much fuss, but they don't fall out, even when shaking the pack upside down! I can't say that for two of my other packs with rear bottle "holders".

Walking 15:45 intensity: (15:36 @1) + (9 @2) 1.04 mi (15:11 / mi) +2m 15:05 / mi

Pack hike testing.

I crashed the Fragiles' TNT. Michelle wanted stern practice, so we paired up in the canoe while Cris and w4j took kayaks out to the usual beach turnaround. Michelle improved quite a bit after the first few loop de loops. Nothing as crazy as the merry three Fragile voyage previously regaled, other than when we almost hit w4j at full speed. She laughed at the fear in my eyes.

I chatted up my proposal to have the Rage hosted by a rotating band of AR enthusiasts, eg, Greens 2015, MAR 2016, MRA 2016, WAR 2017, repeat etc. Barebones, long legs, no frills, just semi local 24 AR.

Canoeing 15:41 intensity: (41 @0) + (13:28 @1) + (1:15 @2) + (17 @3) 1.29 mi (12:08 / mi)

With a few minutes before my conference call for work, w4j and I dropped the hammer. W4J can STEER! It felt like we were on train tracks. If only I could keep that pace up for more than 15 minutes! It was a lot of fun trying to crack the 6 mph barrier.

I had such plans for this to be a great weekend of productivity and training, and then work had to go mess it up.

But I made a recovery plan: Cooper goes clockwise, I go counter, then he can start on time and I won't penalize him with my lateness. This worked well, other than I didn't think to specify road or path! But all's well that ends well.

Nice to see him again after a too long hiatus, and discuss revised race plans in light of the Rage cancellation.

Swimming 5:00 [3]

Tried some dry bag float swimming. Tempted to try more wet shortcuts at WT.

Is it normal for dry bags to lose air when floating on your back (submerging them)?

Then fogged up the truck for 45 minutes as I did a conference call in the Kent Lake beach parking lot.

Note
slept:9.0

Washed cars for six hours today. Does wax on, wax off transfer to AR?

I am wondering, philosophically, if I should make a giant nav practice push this week. On one hand, I'm covered in PI and want to stop feeling miserable before WT, on the other hand, more nav is always better. But showing up healthy and happy is nice too. Physically, the hay is about all in the barn - does that work the same mentally?
