Orienteering 1:50:06 intensity: (5:41 @0) + (1:21:47 @1) + (22:38 @2) 2.85 mi (38:38 / mi) +81m 35:30 / mi

Holy moly! I figured conditions would be slow. I was not expecting them to be this slow! No postholing, just soft fluffy snow nearly knee deep most of the time, and sometimes up to the thighs. I have never hiked so slowly in all of my days. And yet, often over 130 bpm! We originally planned to do separate routes and convene at the controls, but at 1 mph and 5 deg, we decided to go cooperatively.

Kind of a rust buster orienteering wise. Wobbly to #1, but mostly accurate. Skipped #2, strong to #3 until near the end, false trail threatened to derail me. Mussed up to #4 a bit, in part I blame not being able to thumb compass with big gloves on. :-) Eventually we were standing at the hill, and then popped into the little feature. Wonderful to #5 and w4j even found the rock at #6 under all of the snow.

Screwed up to #9, I blame poor scale reading and starting on the wrong spur, and I missed a slope tick so I had the trail opposite from reality (I thought low west, high east at first). A great view from the top!

Then across swamps just because you could. Igor, please add this root stock!

Excellent workout, great fun. I should see about snowshoes.....

XC Ski 1:24:30 intensity: (11:31 @0) + (1:04:21 @1) + (6:12 @2) + (2:26 @3) 3.15 mi (26:50 / mi) +31m 26:02 / mi

The Greens have it good. We literally stepped off the porch and started skiing through their yard and into Brighton Rec. Cooper led on one of the routes he is developing, and we played on one of the hills, perfecting our downhill and jumping technique. Then we cut over for a part of the blue loop. Igor's hill bounding technique found favor with everyone.

w4j & Michelle climb one of the powdery hills near the Bauer bend:

Light snow falling...the sun breaking through....

Regrouping after the hill:

Fresh powder hides hidden holes that can swallow a man:

A couple of downhill runs, time to go check out Blue:

Gorgeous day in the woods! We all want to try it at night sometime.

Erg rowing 44:52 intensity: (1:08 @0) + (43:44 @1) 3.0 mi (14:57 / mi)
ahr:108 max:123

Something at least.

So on my way home I encountered a massive traffic jam. This car felt entitled to drive past all of us on the shoulder, until it tried to avoid a car partially blocking the shoulder. The cheater slid off the road a bit and got stuck. Karma?

Running 48:17 intensity: (17 @0) + (10:43 @1) + (22:29 @2) + (14:09 @3) + (30 @4) + (9 @5) 3.26 mi (14:49 / mi) +171m 12:44 / mi
ahr:143 max:181 slept:5.5 weight:200.8lbs shoes: IceBugs

Changing in the back of the Mini with the hatch open was cold! Starting running was cold! And then anything that wasn't uphill in the woods was cold!

I went to the peak of Kuebler, and did three reps of down to Huron River Drive and back up. Not quite as steep as Tar Hollow, and of course not as tall, but some of the same feeling. I want to try to do some good hills once a week, but that will be tough with current schedules.

Then over for a short loop of Bird Hills and back through Kuebler to the car.
10 PM

Lazy spin.

Average calorie deficit per day calculation is dropping so maybe I am eating back too many of the probably overestimated exercise calories and will back off that a bit. I also added in the target line to my target race, which calms me down since I'm still ahead of the game.
9 PM

Walking (Shoveling) 42:00 [1]

Sounds like I got off easy with under an hour.

Note

I am considering that Raccoon Creek might be a good venue to test bottle refilling. I've never tried it, but there is the big creek and several smaller creeks. So access is pretty good. Last year I ran out, and for Cabin Fever I carried extra weight that I could have scavenged from one of Tar Hollow's creeks.
