ahr:123 max:150 shoes: Jamis Dragon Sport 29er

Easy ride up to Home Depot on unsuccessful bid for a non-filthy version of the rain gauge they had in Dearborn. Apparently Brighton does not stock it.

And...I'm just going to put it out there...Home Depot does not have a lot of bike parking
9 AM

Biking 25:39 intensity: (10:19 @0) + (9:17 @1) + (5:19 @2) + (44 @3) 5.66 mi (13.2 mph) +27m

Easy ride over to Cooper's. Shared Rage notes.

Uptempo ride back home from the Green residence.

Orienteering (Night) 2:05:49 intensity: (1:37:46 @0) + (16:37 @1) + (8:11 @2) + (3:15 @3) **** 5.35 mi (23:31 / mi) +151m 21:37 / mi
ahr:117 max:155 spiked:4/7c shoes: Roclite #2

Night orienteering on Cooper's Brighton streamers, from his deck to his deck. He was very kind and streamered the maze of trails to the start on the Blue loop. I'm not nearly that good.

1 - got a little lucky, I should really be more focused on start. But thought I went around the small hill SW of the 900', so I was ready for the right hill.

2 - some hesitation, worried I was too high up to see the spur

3 - been there, done that. :-)

4 - Thought it was going to be a while, then hit Torn Shirt, figured it would head mostly the right way (I don't know the trail). Tricked by a few small depressions along the way just before, one small one laden with pink ribbons!

5 - Seems like at night, elevation is very helpful. So I climbed the big hill, because I could see "up", then went west to the next ridge

6 - My big error, that blue trail was just too tempting and I didn't remember where it went. I knew I was going "somewhat" NE, but I didn't want to believe my compass. Terrain was flattening out so I figured I would head south, boy that took awhile since I so far north. Relocated from the corner. In hindsight, should have done compass/bearing from the high point where I went NE. Live and learn! There were lots of clues to my error but I managed to rationalize them or ignore them. Better to learn that now that at the next race. :-)

7 - Nicest section of woods, probably my favorite just because it was off trail but easy walking

So much fun and good training!

ahr:106 max:127 slept:7.0 shoes: Brooks Ghost Blue

w/ dear wife and 11 lb pack. One mile for each year of marriage, plus one to grow on. Midway point was Tim Horton's for breakfast.

Hopefully will stay married for a while yet, since my fingers swelled up and this ring is not coming off.

Note

Apparently I'm a fair weather biker, since the downpour this morning convinced me to drive in instead.

I should find all the fenders and put them on the bike. Although that still leaves the small matter of where to park it if it's soaked. Unless I throw a mover's blanket in my cube or something.

Walking 1:10:00 [3] 1.0 mi (1:10:01 / mi)

Lawn mowing.

Night o at Brighton Rec on Cooper's streamers w/ USGS.

Very tough; visibility is not very good. Missed #3 on the first pass (also thought I started much farther west), too low down by the swamp. Missed #2, not sure if I got close, and then the light came up so I bailed. Vegetation was very thick. Trails are not on the map, so no relief there.

Good training! Might have to dial back my ambitions and just do this as onesie/twosie things on non bike commute days. I need this practice.

Biking 33:05 intensity: (37 @0) + (6:02 @1) + (18:28 @2) + (7:58 @3) 9.38 mi (17.0 mph) +4m
ahr:145 max:161 slept:7.0 shoes: Jamis Dragon Sport 29er

First partial commute to work in forever!

Hines would be wicked fun on skinny tires with drop bars.

No huge errors in preparation. I wish we had lockers in this building, but the shower water is hot so s'all good.

Also I think I could start commuting on random days without staging; I put a test load of clothes in the old Golite VO24 and it was fine for riding.
4 PM

Biking 38:55 intensity: (2:33 @0) + (7:50 @1) + (24:12 @2) + (4:20 @3) 9.35 mi (14.4 mph) +17m
ahr:142 max:158 shoes: Jamis Dragon Sport 29er

Not surprisingly, the additional temp, traffic, and headwind took a little bit off the pace. Good stuff though.

Note

So the tentative partial bike commute roll out will be:

Today: Stage clothes and supplies for tomorrow. Check!
Tues: 10 mile variant (each way)
Wed: Stage
Thurs: 10 mile

Then next week either Tues and Thurs or M/W/F, gradually going from 2-3 times to closer to 5x, and mixing it up from 10-17 miles each way on some semi-sensible ramp. Add in jogs on off days or shorter bike days, preferably in the squishy grass of Hines or on the trails of Maybury (w/ logger for map development).

Note

SMOC is cleared to join Adventure Day at Proud Lake. Supervisor says there is a "dedicated orienteering course". Huh?! If this is more "boy scouts in a vacuum", maybe we should offer to teach o classes, so people don't get the idea that the sport is pacing around a field!

One of these courses in Saline doesn't even use a map.

Despite the newspaper article about it referring to OUSA's site.

Running 34:56 intensity: (23 @0) + (3:41 @1) + (25:56 @2) + (4:56 @3) 3.13 mi (11:10 / mi) +5m 11:07 / mi
ahr:145 max:160 shoes: Brooks Cascadia 8s

I was afraid Maybury might be a mud bath, so I headed over to the luxuriously cushy wood chip trails at Bandemer & Barton.

In case I was wondering why I slowed down towards the end of o season, it's because I lost all running fitness thanks to several months of mostly not ever running.

Note

Emailed Paul about the SMAC Proud Lake map, and emailed the Proud Lake supervisor about Adventure Day participation. I hate phones so I thought an email+offer to stop by and say hi would be a good option.

Walking 1:47:50 [0] 6.86 mi (15:43 / mi) +40m 15:26 / mi
ahr:98 max:123 shoes: Brooks Ghost Blue

Loop around Whitmore Lake. Private trail shortcut was tempting rather than the industrial slog around the service drive. Perhaps I will scout sometime without spouse so if I get in trouble I can just run away.

Dropped my shoes at ~4.7 mile mark since they had eaten my feet. I think I can jog sockless in these, but the different way you step when walking may require socks.

Pack with:

* 10 lbs kitty litter
* 3 lbs water bottles
* 1 lb hoodie my wife decided she didn't want to wear 25 seconds into the walk
