Note
(rest day)

hmmm, feeling a bit fatigued after three consecutive two race weekends, may take it easier this week

Sunday Oct 27, 2013 #

11 AM

Orienteering race 1:11:30 [4] 9.4 km (7:36 / km) +120m 7:09 / km
shoes: Inov8 X-Talon 212

EM League, Ratby
messy wood, messy map, messy run: never again - came to chase some EM League points, thinking JD was elsewhere, but he wasn't and I got thrashed, ran pretty well and my splits were comparable over the last couple of km, over-aggressive start and bingo control did for me earlier in the race

1) fatal thought: "I'll just cut the corner" - the reason the corner looked 'cuttable' was because it was already the path junction, ended up in bramble I needn't have visited, emerged with blood dripping from the end of my nose and almost a minute gone [50+]
2) should've gone round the path but again hoped to skirt the bramble: the bramble was wearing long skirts and there was bracken too [40+]
8) clearing in light green, found the first one (defined by a fence) took a rough bearing, didn't see it, came back around and found the first one again, take two, nope, saw the ride beyond and should've bounced back in from there, but looped around again and came to the original clearing, third time ... bingo, flag hung high in order to be less visible in the the low trees (did they think it would be too easy hung normally?)

after that pretty clean, apart from the irritation of trying to find and then squeezing through gaps in hedges

5th, 8mins behind JD, mission unaccomplished

Event: Twin Peak

12 PM

Orienteering race 1:15:12 [4] 7.1 km (10:35 / km) +425m 8:09 / km
shoes: Inov8 Oroc 340

Macclesfield Forest, Short Brown
plenty of climb on this one, plenty of walking, some good bits of forest though, and a fairly clean run

2) aimed high on the re-entrant, but the control was even lower than expected [15]
3) cut the corner, but entry to control easier thru light green [10]
6) green went on for longer than expected, around quicker? [15]
8) went to fence opposite crossing, then along to gate [10]
13) cut across to open too soon [10]
14) less than direct route up through mid-green - didn't see path up the side! [30]

seems I've underestimated time lost: slow on 3, as well as losting time cutting the corner, drop in aggression/intensity between 5 to 8

10th, 9mins behind Nathan Lawson, 6.5 behind Paul and 6 behind JD

10 AM

Mapping 1:30:00 [0] 5.0 km (18:00 / km) +90m 16:31 / km
shoes: More Mile Cheviot 2

finishing off Clod Hall Moor (aka Birchen Edge), all except the thickest braken is dying off now

1 PM

running 56:18 [3] 10.14 km (5:33 / km) +220m 5:01 / km
ahr:147 max:162 shoes: Inov8 X-Talon 212

The Edges (White, Froggatt, Curbar
magnificent day, warm, sunny with only a breath of wind, tried to keep the pace up and managed very well, a minute slower than July, but the going was firm back then (I was wearing road shoes!)

Wednesday Oct 23, 2013 #

3 PM

Mapping 1:15:00 [0] 3.0 km (25:00 / km) +75m 22:13 / km
shoes: More Mile Cheviot 2

Birchen Edge: surveying the southern end of the ridge, get a bit confused in there, I think because the slope bends around 90 degrees and the plateau all looks the same

6 PM

running warm up/down 15:21 [2] 2.9 km (5:18 / km) +50m 4:52 / km
shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascend 7

usual loop around Moorledge as warm up for intervals, but forgot heart monitor so ran to the park via the house

running intervals 24:22 [5] 6.0 km (4:04 / km) +10m 4:02 / km
ahr:158 max:170 shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascend 7

6 x 1km, 90 secs rest: 4.06 4.03 4.03 4.04 4.03 4.03

was going to do five, but they weren't fast enough so I did another, had stitch for the second and third (a banana an hour before?), the first would've been the quickest but I had to contend with a dog nipping at my heels twice on the same lap
