Orienteering race 1:09:58 [4] 8.7 km (8:03 / km) +40m 7:52 / km
shoes: Inov8 Oroc 340

EM League, Burbage Common
good course, better than explected, head-scratching long leg and some tricky shorter ones, but ...

a) there was a printing problem and the light green wasn't visible on the map (not acceptable for level C really)(didn't use pro printers)
c) two controls were described as veg boundaries where no 'veg boundary' was marked on the map
c) the undergrowth obscured some paths (if they were there at all) and a lot of the small gullies

lost over 3mins at 2 when I crossed the gully without noticing and found a control on a veg boundary when there seemed to be none in the vicinity, later in the proverbial armchair I can just make out the palest of light green (bad printing), but no veg boundary (bad mapping/controlling), a day for late starters

how can you relocate at a control placed on a feature that is not drawn on the map?

4th, 7+mins behind Stewart Fishwick of AROS, well-beaten by Dai :(

(but approx. 950 points)

Oker Loop
got a new pair of shoes delivered at 6pm great timing for a test run, nice, not especially grippy (they're for road/trails) though only spikes would've handled the greasy slope down the spur today

was taking it steady, and paused at the stile to consider a contour, but this was my fastest time (76secs faster than the last outing)

good news

Mapping 1:00:00 [0] 4.5 km (13:20 / km) +100m 12:00 / km
shoes: Saucony Peregrine

quick session at Birchen/Gardom's Edge finishing off the field of bracken, walked out beneath Birchen some deep bracken developing there

running race 39:36 [5] 7.7 km (5:09 / km) +215m 4:31 / km
shoes: inov8 Mudclaw 272

Grindleford Fell Race
glad I made it along to this one, it's always nice to run through Longshaw but there was sunshine aswell

massive field and had start faster than I'd like, still it wasn't fast enough and was in the queue going up through the wood, had to walk on several occasions when I would have been running, out on top was stuck behind a fairly wide young man who was slowing to a walk occasionally, this can't have helped my overall pace and position, after that, once it levelled out I tried to push on, but couldn't really get much traction, had a touch of stitch to contend with and could feel the left hamstring (nothing serious), two guys came past on the long descent down Padley Gorge, I think I took one of those places back, though the long field before the river got to me, could do no more than match the pace of the guys in front and didn't bother to try and outsprint them

66th (out of many), 5+mins behind winner

(rest day)

well-earned rest day, despite last night's run being a bit of a meander

Dovedale Loop from Tissington Gates
very picturesque run out to the ridge above Dovedale, then down via Pickering Tor, however, the guys had decided to visit 'the Nabbs' which involved a scramble not a run so I continued on my own not sure what the rest of the route would be, ending up running back down to Mill Dale and then trying to fall our outward route back, but I'd been chatting so much or enjoying the view I hadn't realize how many small climbs there had been

slow, due to the climb and the uncertainty
